Re: Patrick Daly
Hi Jess,
These threads are hard for me to keep track of, but I'm "Trish", aka Patricia Daly. I have posts on this board and elsewhere, and honestly, at times I'm not sure whom I'm writing responses to. But here goes...
I'm the grand-neice of Dr. Timothy Daly of Chicago. He was born in Pittsfield, Lorain, Ohio, 1874, and was a twin brother to Thomas. I was incorrect about his graduation from an Ohio college. He was graduated in 1897 from Northwestern University, and remained in Chicago the rest of his life. His practice was on "Halstead" near the Stockyards. He never lost touch with his Ohio family, travelled here quite often, and was buried in Ohio in 1939.
My GrGf, Lawrence Daly came to the US around 1830, and first appears on the 1850 OH Census. He is one of 3 brothers that I know of. The other two were John and James, who settled in OH, but were dead by 1843. I'm not sure where Lawrence was for those 20 years. Family legend says we're from County Cork...but that's an incredibly big county!
My Dalys, with a couple of exceptions, remained in Ohio and owned and farmed lots of land. If you take a look at an Ohio map, you'll find that they were on the route of Lake Erie, as Cleveland (Cuyahoga County), Lorain (Lorain County), and Sandusky (Erie County), are just some of our lake cities.
Lawrence married his widowed sister-in-law, Ann Marie Moran Daly. She was originally James' wife, and she and James had a son, "Renselaer L." Daly (1842). After James died, Lawrence married Ann Marie about 1846 and raised Renselaer as his son. Renselaer's name was changed to "James R."
Lawrence and Ann Marie went on to have the following sons: Francis, Lawrence, and William. She died in July, 1860. About 1862-3, Lawrence married my GrGm, Mary Egan, who came to the US in 1851. Their children were: Anne Marie, Marie Anne, Frank, John Patrick, Timothy Aloysius and Thomas, and my GrF, Joseph (1878-1924).
James R. migrated to Michigan in 1865, and lived there until 1920+ when he died. I haven't found his relatives.
William married Elizabeth Smyth/Smith in OH and immigrated to MO by 1900. They lived in Moberly, Randolph MO., and I believe there are some there today. (It's interesting that we share the names Patrick and Thomas, maybe there is a link.)
We do not know the whereabouts of Francis Daly, but Frank remained in Ohio and died in 1923.
The rest of our DALYs remained in Ohio in the cities of Elyria, Pittsfield, LaGrange, Grafton and Cleveland.
If your relative died along the Erie route, he could be buried even in New York or Indiana, as well as Ohio, as Lake Erie crosses into those states too. Your relative could have also worked in the quarries here. They were largely in Amherst Ohio, which is also in Lorain County.
Regards,
Trish
