Dalys of Armoy, Antrim, Ireland

Hi

I am seeking information about the family of my great-great-grandmother Ellen (or Eleanor - various spellings) Daly / Daley / Dailey / Daily.

She was born in the parish of Armoy, in the county Amtrim, Ireland around the year 1834, and was the daughter of James Daly (farmer) and Margaret Blair.

Ellen emigrated to New Zealand, arriving in Christchurch with her cousin Eliza Black on September 30, 1862, as a "promised bride" to James Doak (my great-great-grandfather, from Belfast, County Down - born May 4, 1828, and the son of John Doak and Margaret Donaldson). The couple were married in the St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Christchurch, on June 17, 1863 - although they were known to be Methodist (the first Methodist church in Christchurch wasn't opened until 1864 - although I know from another branch of the family, that Methodist services were being conducted in private homes).

James and Ellen lived briefly in Christchurch, where their eldest son William George was born in 1864 (married Mary Eliza Quigley), before purchasing farmland in Leeston, in the Ellesmere district south of Christchurch. It was here in the Leeston area that James and Ellen lived the remainder of their lives, having four more children, Margaret Maria (born 1867, married John Quigley), James (born 1870, married Annie Clara Wills), John Alexander (1875, married Mary Elizabeth Wills - my great-grandparents) and Mary Eleanor (born 1877, married John Frederick French).

Ellen passed away on December 22, 1912, while James departed this earth on May 27, 1909.

I would be grateful for any information related to Ellen's and James' families.

Thanks
David Hill
Christchurch, New Zealand

Patrick Daly

My Patrick was born in Ireland (Cork?) in ca. 1830 and came to the US in about 1852. I know that he was married to Ellen Connors at St. Mary's Church in Glens Falls, NY in 1854. Witnesses were John Sweeney and Mary Connors. Nine months later, their first son James was baptized in the same church and his sponsors were Daniel and Ellen (nee Daly) Lane.
Patrick and Ellen moved to Iowa and family legend says he drowned along the way. By 1856, Ellen is living in Osage, Iowa with Daniel and Ellen Lane. She has a new baby, named William. Ellen's obituary says she was born in County Cork, but we aren't sure about where in Ireland Patrick was born.

Ellen remarried and her children were named Daniel, George, Julia, Cornelius, Mary Ellen and Denis.

I understand how hard it is to find a specific Daly family in Ireland and I continue to research, but if any of this sounds familiar, please let me know!

Is anyone familiar with Andrew Daly who is enumerated in the 1870 census as a railroad laborer in Pulaski Co, AR? He is in the dwelling with several other railraod workers in Eastman Township. He was 34 years old, born in Ireland, could not read or write and was not a citizen. The census index on this site has him misnamed as Andrew Waly but on the census image it is obvious that the name is Daly.

I'm trying to trace Jeremiah J. Daly married to Ellen Kingston in Ireland prior to 1844. First son was Patrick James also born in Ireland in 1844. My question is did Jeremiah emigrate to US also? I think they were from County Cork

Daly in Ohio

I descend from a group of Dalys who settled in Ohio, Lorain County, USA. They were James and John. The earliest record I've found was an 1836 "land transaction". In 1838 they were naturalized. In 1843 they both died! Another brother, Lawrence moved to Ohio, and married the widowed sister-in-law.

In 1870, a Michael and Catherine Dailey lived in LaGrange, Lorain, Ohio. They had the children: Anna, Johnny, Mary and Thomas, who were all born in Ohio, starting in 1863.

Is anyone related to this line? They moved in so close to my Dalys, that it seems there should be a connection.

Trish

my daly ancestors

my mother has a huge file of daly family history called the "Daly Chronicles" written by dermot daly (i think) in which i have traced myslef to be directly descending from this Nial of the nine hostages bloke. Who seems to be famous for some reason as every other Irish family seems to think they are decended from him also, i believe he was an ancient king of ireland, i don't really know if this is correct but from these daly chronicles thing Nial of the nine hostages seems to be my great great great etc...x30 somthing grandfather, i'm not quite sure why i'm writing this, i just found it mildy interesting, my great grandfather was general Sir Henry dermot Daly who seems to have a lot of history, so if anyone is willing to back-up my theory have a look around for info about him and you should find that he links back to the kings of Ireland (again i'm not sure, which is why i'm asking) so if anyone knows anything about this subject please email me or reply here. thanks loads tomas/kit Daly.

Hello all,

Trying, with great difficulty, to trace the Daly side of my family. Does any of the following match up with anyone's research.

Starting in Coolnaleen, Listowel, Co Kerry. Michael Daly (b1866) married Mary Murphy (b1867) in c1888. They had eight children in Coolnaleen:
Patrick Joseph (1888)
John (c1890)
Timothy (c1893)
Mary (c1895)
Michael (c1900)
Cornelius (c1907)
Bridget (1909)

Patrick Joseph Daly (b1888) married on 17/6/1916 in Cloyne, Co Cork to Jane Canavan (b1885). They had four children (all in Cloyne):
Timothy (1920)
Henry Joseph (1921)
Thomas (1924)
Mary (1925)

Sometime during the 1920's Patrick moved to Warwick, England with his four children but not his wife. I do know that aged 18 in 1906, Patrick joined the Royal Munster Fusiliers.

Thanks, Mark

Irish Naming Pattern

For all of you who are familiar with the Irish naming pattern, I have a question. If memory serves, it goes out to about 4 children of each sex. My GRgf had 2 wives, and 12 children, 11 of whom survived. As far as I can tell, they were true to the pattern.

What happens when there are more than 4 children of each sex? I assume with a new wife, she starts the pattern again to suit her family. The second wife birthed 2 females, 1 male before 1870, and by 1880 she birthed 4 more males.

My problem is the first male she birthed named "John". This was actually my GRgf's 4th boy, which would probably be a "brother's name."

The reason this gets tricky is for trying to find my GGgf. The first son Ggf had was a boy named "James", which would be his father's name, except that this child was originally called Renselear by his real father, James, who died when the son was a baby. I believe Lawrence married James' widow, and they "re-named" the child James, which could be after his father, or his grandfather.

Can anyone help me sort through this?
With much appreciation,
Patricia

Ellen Daly/Daley

I`m afraid I have scant information so I am desperate for a lead on this. I believe Ellen was irish and was (according to my mum) a teacher who helped found a catholic school (St Patrick`s) in Thornaby (NE England). This would have been early 1900s. Mum died recently and I am now a bit mixed up as I thought she told me that Ellen was her aunt (my great aunt) but it seems more likely that she was my ggrandmother. I would guess that Ellen was born 1870-1890 and I think (if she is my ggrandmother) married a Donald Gunn. They had at least 4 children - Donald (b1905), Annie, May and Agnes. Any help would be most welcome
Anne

Books about the Daly Clan

I am trying to borrow copies of "The Dalys of Dalystown" and "The O'Dalys of Muintiravara". These two books are now so rare that the research librarian working with me is having difficulty findings copies to borrow. One copy of "The Dalys" has been found on microfiche. One non-circulating copy of "The O'Dalys" was located overseas.

I would like to make modern reprints of these books available to other O Dalaigh, like myself, who want to own a comprehensive library of resource books on O'Daly genealogy and history. My intention would be to photocopy the texts, return them to the lender immediately, do any necessary research, make any updates which may be needed in the text [making clear which material was added], and then make the reprints available to anyone who wishes to own them. People looking for these books have been confronted with the rarity of the books and the expense of buying an original text (when one can be found) and the expense of photocopying the texts if they find one to borrow. These problems would be alleviated by my project - if I am first able to borrow the texts.

Does anyone own a copy of either book which they would be willing to lend for this project?

Does anyone know of any other books on the O'Daly which would be appropriate for the project?

Any thoughts, suggestions or ideas are welcome.

Neil.

In the 1901 census it shows him living in Tralee with his mother Julia Daly (nee Linihan or Lenihan) sister Mary and brothers Jeremiah and John. His profession is shown as solicitors’ clerk. From word of mouth I believe he married and had 4 children, possible names Dominic; Sheila; Eileen and another daughter. They moved to England and lost contact.
