E-mail me and I will send you a copy of the picture front and back. I am just trying to find a connection they might have with the Mallory, Pauley or Dents and find the right family for picture. Thank you Angie

Hi, I am a Dames from South Africa. My dad had 13 siblings with the surname Dames, and we are 3 children one girl & 2 boys. Both my grandparent (Dames) are deceased - my grandma (Dames) were 95 when she passed away, she had a bad fall, broke her hip and died of complications - as far as I am aware off, she was quite healthy apart from the accident so it seems like there is no majour illnesses in the family line.
Regards

I saw this old post, and am interested in information that you may have. Edward G Dahms/Dames and Bertha H Felix are my Brother-In-Law's GGrandparents through their son Gustave who married anna (last name?). I'm the one in the family that enjoys putting these puzzle pieces together! I have found SOME information on them back to them immigrating to the US, but nothing before that. I'd also like to be able to fill in information after 1930. I'd love to find out if you have any concrete birth and death dates or any other puzzle pieces I don't have!!!

Thank you so much in advance!

Amy Robbins

I have only just received from Documents on Line the will of Richard Dames Died 1821. Mary is mentioned.I didn't know of her existence until I saw the will. I already had siblings George bp 1777 , Anne Martha bp 1784 m. William Wells Plaxton ,Sarah Dickenson bp 1785 m. Thomas Wells Plaxton, Lucy Elizabeth bp 1786, Charles Richard bp 1793 m. Elizabeth Walton. There is a site on the net for a" sugar refiners database", this has listings of Dames, Plaxtons, Waltons.

I just came across an album of old (probably late 1800s) photos (both paper and ferrotypes.) Only 2 have any id on them. One is actually a receiving card or something. It has a small photo of a young man, and has "Joseph Dames" printed on it. The other one with a name on it is of a woman and small child. On the back it says Bennie Brown, S. May Brown, Woodburn, Marion Co, Oregon.
Many of the other photos have photographer imprints from Iowa - Keosauqua, Milton, Ottumwa. There are a couple from northern Missouri, and 1 from Illinois.
If you think this Joseph Dames might be your family, please let me know - I'll be glad to share.
About all I know of John was that he was a banker in Devonshire. Accroding to notes made by one of his brothers, in 1821 'my brother John situated at a merchants house in Liverpool'. In a further note, this brother (Francis), mentiones that, in 1836, John was 'Manager, Provincial Bank, South Molton, Devon.

Dear Barbara, I have seen your entry in the Message-board. You say, that your Dames-line came from "Hammerstien". Is this perhaps "Hammerstein", the little village at the rhine-river between Bonn and Mainz? If you can confirm this, please contact me. My family is from Irlich, 5 miles from Hammerstein. In this region all Dames are related to each other. I have my ancestors back to 1666.
Bernhard Dames, Germany

My oldest known ancestor was Johann Jacob Dames/Dahmes/Dahms. He was in old documents called a "Wirt" (store-keeper) and he was a "Leibeigener" (serv, bondman) of the Graf (count) zu Wied. He is named in Irlich the 1.st time at 1677 in the church-book. His children was Johannes *1665 (married to Koblenz 1690), Andreas *1666 (my line), Hermann *1677 and Margarethe *1680. The descendants of Joh.Jakob are grown up to hundreds. Your Edward G. Dahms I could not find in my collection of documents. I will try to find the church-books of Hammerstein. I need some time for this. Do you know the year of his birth?

Yesterday I was looking into the original Parish-books of Hammerstein. (They are in the city-archiv of Neuwied) There was no Dahms, Dames, no Heilmore Felix, also no similar names into the books. I searched the christenings 1848-1866, 1880-1900, marriages 1849-1890. I looked also the alphabetic name-lists (Familienbuch)-nothing. I think, that your Dahms not came from Hammerstein at the rhein-river. Perhaps there was an other Hammerstein.

Dear Joseph E. Dames,
yes, I have a lot of material about Dames in Germany. My own family lives since 1673 (or longer) in the village Irlich at the banks of the Rhein-river. This is between Bonn and Koblenz, the village is now a part of the city Neuwied. Since 1690 some of our family lives in Koblenz. In later years some went to Andernach, Troisdorf and other places not far from Neuwied.
The following Dames (of Irlich) emigrated between 1837 - 1866 to the United States:
1) Franz (Francis) Dames, born 1823, emigrated near 1846 to Missouri. Lived mostly in St. Paul, St.Charles County. Many descendants.
2) Peter Joseph Dames, born 1842 (brother of Franz), emigrated 1866, lived in St.Louis, MO, descendants.
3) Nikolaus (Nick) Dames, born 1839, (brother of Franz), emigrated 1860, Farmer in Portage des Sioux, St.Charles CO, MO. Many descendants.
4) Jacob Dames, born 1809, perhaps 1837 emigration to Zanesville, Muskingum CO, Ohio. I dont know, if children.
I have no informations about earlier emigrants and I dont know, if some Dames of Irlich went to Great Britain or to the Bahamas. I would like to get more informations about this.
Bernhard

I have just read your message about Mansell L-D. I am Angela Allchurch nee Longworth-Dames, 2nd daughter of Desmond L-D (1901-1964) who was the last owner of Greenhill, Offaly, which was burnt down during the 'troubles' in the 1920's. I have 1 remaining sister. I do know of the Dames-Longworths, the last onw I met lived near Croyden in the 1960's. He has since died, but he did have two children. I thought my sister & I were the last surviving members of the L-D family. I would love to hear from any one else descended from an L-D of Greenhill.

-Rather, I was hoping you could help us. We have an ancestor, Celia (aka Alicia) Bourke who married George Mecham c1794. An old family chart shows her a dau of Maunsel Bourke esq. of Galway. We have been unable to find any further positive family connections for Celia.
-We believe that she was the elder sister of Jane Bourke, who married Thomas Longworth-Dames in 1788, ie Thomas Longworth; who added the name Dames. Am I right in assuming you have a copy of the Longworth-Dames of Greenhill, Kings County, pedigree, which starts with Thomas and Jane Bourke (or Burke) and includes the Mansel Longworth-Dames you mention (b.12 Jan 1850, Bath), Deputy Commissioner Indian Civil Service, and his wife Mary Ann Ivens. I can scan and email this if you want.
-My question is; have you come across any info on Jane Bourke which could be of interest to us. Of course, her lineage runs right back through the Mansel family to 1066. We just haven't been able to confirm the link with our Celia, who died in Bath in 1846. Regards Mick Mecham

Patrick: Your information re Celia Bourke is extremely interesting to us. There was actually an earlier Longworth-Mecham connection, when Robert Mecham (1674-1734) witnessed the will of Peter Longworth in 1698. They appear to have been neighbours near Athlone. I have already emailed you personally. Do you know anything about Maunsel Bourke, the girls' father -the mother does not seem to be mentioned anywhere we have seen.
Celia outlived her husband by many years, dying in Bath in 1846. She had 2 sons George (my direct ancestor) and Maunsel. We have plenty of information of Celia's descendants. There were 3 Maunsel Mechams; the one mentioned above, Lt Maunsel Mecham 92nd Regt and an Australian, also Lt M.M, served in the Boer War.
looking forward to hearing from you on this matter.Mick

Pippa: Thanks for reponse. For my own research, a Longworth Dames connection through Jane L D (nee Burke), my ancestor Celia Mecham's (nee Burke) sister, uncovered a long ancestry in Galway, in particular. The only aspect I could hope for further would be some Mecham (also spelt Meacham, Meecham) relationship with Longworth in Athlone. The Mechams were neighbours of the Longworths of Creggan, from around 1695 to 1840s. Robert Mecham witnessed Peter Longworth's will in 1698.
