The oral family history, which no one can verify, is that the Damm's name was originally French, D'damville. They went to Germany as part of a persecuted group of protestant Heugonots. In Germany, they changed their name to Damm.

If this is true, it would make sense that some of the family came through French-speaking Quebec.

I included stories on my tree, if you'd like to see more. If you think there is a family likeness, you can send photos to me at joanne.rodgers@gmail.com

Thanks for the response. It's not likely that this is our man but I'd love to see the photo. I don't know what route our man took from Quebec to Illinois and his wife did have family in Minnesota so it's not entirely impossible. I have a picture of our Frederick's grandson and a daughter so I may be able to see some resemblance if he is related.
You can't send an attachment through this board so you can email it to me at furlin@hotmail.com
Denise

I'm trying to find out how I am related to a Friedrich Damm. This is the name handwritten under a photo I have found with my family's pictures. It was taken in a studio in Winona, Minn, I'm guessing around 1900. He appears to be about 40 and has a goatee about a foot long!

My great grandfather, Carl (Charles) Julius Damm, came from Germany, lived in Wis, where he joined the army during the Civil War. As far as I know, there are no brothers, however, this Friedrich may be a cousin.

Let me know if this sounds like a possible link to your family. Let me know if you'd like to see the photo.

Joanne

I'm not sure if we can be of any help to each other, but I have found a photo in my father's family photos, which has "Friedrich Damm" written below it. It was taken at a studio in Winona, Minn. There's no date, but it looks around 1900's. The man is about 40 with a goatee about a foot long! I would have guessed that he was my great grandfather, except for his first name.

My grandfather, Samuel Damm, is an only child. We don't know of any other relatives, except his father, Carl Julius Damm. Carl came from Germany, joined the Army during the Civil War from Wis. He later became a German Baptist minister in New York.

If you think this might be a relative, I'll email you the photo.

Joanne

1913 letter from George DAMM of George, Lyon County, Iowa to Germany

I recently found an old envelope that George DAMM of George, Lyon County, Iowa sent to George DAMM in Norden, Ostfreisland (now Lower Saxony), Germany. You can see the envelope on www.philgen.org (search on DAMM, click on View, and scroll to the bottom of the page). I want to determine if Norden is the birthplace of George DAMM and if this envelope is helpful to someone in their genealogical research. The reason I have a photo of the envelope is because of my interest in using old envelopes and postcards in genealogical research. I have an article in the spring 2009 issue of New England Ancestors entitled Philatelic Genealogy and have started the philgen website. I do not know if the letter that was in the envelope still exists.

I just realized that I posted this under Chicago Damm, not Nicholas.

I have added new information after my original post.

I have just started researching my family of Damm. My great grandfather was George Joseph Damm. His brother was Nicholas Joseph Damm. The entire family resided in Chicago. Peter and Marie/Maria Damm had Henry, William Joseph, Joseph P., Emma Josephine, Nicholas Joseph and George Joseph. I have just visited the gravesite of Nicholas and Francis, their son William, his daughter Gertrude and her husband Mark. There is also a baby buried there was does not have a name. I have a picture of Nicholas and George when they were children.

I am hoping some of this sounds familiar, as we are trying to find any of the family from the brothers and sisters.

New Message:

This is the same Nicholas Damm. I have him married to Francis Connolly in December 1892. He always lived in Chicago, in fact was born there, and died there. I have quite a bit of information on him.

I am new to this message board. Is there anyway you can contact me off the board?
Just some clarifications. I continued searching for Erik Axel Damm at Ancestry.com but after a lot of time I found Erik Axel Dunne which I think must be the right person. Someone has just misread the last name and spelt it Dunne instead of Damm. He went to Glascow in Scotland and then to Larne, Ireland. The name of the ship was State of Pennsylvania.

I hope that this information results in someone knowing someting about this man and will answer me. Hope to get information soon.

Kind Regards
Marita, Västerås, Sweden

Paul, I am sorry I missed your reply to me. Upon further review (and your list of surnames) we are on the same line. I am related thru Annie Marie Damm. It appears your line (Ludders) is thru John Martin Damm. If this is correct, then hallejulah.

I have not exhausted the Annie Marie line, but lets just say the line is now damn tired. I have (with help) followed from her down to the present day, with few omitted people. But, other than her and her siblings, I have squat. The only spouse I have was John Martin Damm's. I also have VERY little on her parents and their parents.

Please email me at the listed address and then I can give you a better one.

Michael

I appreciate the reply. Don't know if there's a connection since I was told my John Damm was from Alsace-Lorraine, France (which use to be a German area). But I'll keep you information on hand. I know his son, Christopher Damm was born in Cestelek, Hungary and married in Molyfalva, Hungary (now Molin). That's about all I know. Not much huh?

I believe John was from Reiskirchen, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, since that's where his daughter, Mary (my great grandmother) was from. Mary married Friedrich Farner (he was from Switzerland) in Peru, Lasalle County, IL in 1885. The only info I have on John is that he died in 1897 at the age of 78.
