Elizabeth Viola Hickey, daughter of Herman William and Ethel Maude (Anderson) Dammann, was born November 17, 1914 near Grimes, Iowa. In 1915 her family moved to Depew. They later moved to Fenton and then Cylinder. In 1929 Elizabeth’s family made their home in Emmetsburg. She received her education in the Fenton, Cylinder, and Emmetsburg schools graduating from Emmetsburg High School in 1932. Following graduation Elizabeth taught country school in the area for ten years.
On September 29, 1937 Elizabeth was united in marriage to Laurence P. Hickey. They farmed east of Osgood and she worked for the A.S.C.S. office. After their retirement from farming in 1970 Elizabeth and Laurence moved to Cape Coral, Florida where they resided for twelve years before returning to Emmetsburg in 1982.
Elizabeth was a member of Holy Family Parish in Emmetsburg and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was godmother to ten of her nieces and nephews.
Elizabeth died Monday, May 16, 2005 at the Emmetsburg Care Center at the age of 90. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Laurence on January 2, 1983; two brothers, Harold and Waldo Dammann; two sisters, Louise Dammann and Vera Frederick; and a sister-in-law, Laura Dammann.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Eva Dammann of Worthington, MN; as well as other relatives and many friends.
