A Dammann Family Exiled by the Kaiser?: I am searching for a WIlhelmina Dammann

HI. I heard an apocryphal story that some of my Dammann ancestors--unclear on spelling--were exiled by the Kaiser. Has anyone heard anything like that?

I am also looking for info on my Great Grandmother, Wilhelmina Dammann--may be spelled variously: eg. Damon, Daum, Dahman, Domin. She was born in Ohio in 1892, married Samuel Price in roughly 1920, and they lived in Cleveland. Allegedly, she had family in the Youngstown area, worked as a house servant in Cleveland, and graduated from OSU. The spelling of her first name may also vary: eg. Wilhelmina, Wilamina, Minnie, Philemina. I think her father was a William John Dammann, born in 1868 in Ohio and died in 1919. THanks.

Dammann Information. Pretty Interesting.

Research has shown that the bearers of the surname Dammann previously inhabited the modern state of Lower Saxony, in the region of Oldenburg. Now bordered by the North Sea, the Hartz mountains and the Elbe and Ems river.

In the Middle ages the Dammann family settled in Oldenburg, where the name emerged in mediaeval times as one of the notable families of the region. From the 13th century the surname was identified with the great social and economic evolution which made this territory a landmark contributor to the development of the German nation.

Research shows that the name Dammann underwent changes, scribes often recorded names as they sounded, due to different regional dilects many spellings occured, often between generations. Among the different variations were Damann, Daman and Damm to show a few examples.

While living in Oldenburg they continued to be an important contributor to the life of Europe in the Middle Ages. From the 16th century onwards the name branched to Brandenburg, Pomerania, Silesia and even France and Belgium. The name spelled as Damm was associated with an ancient patrician family and lived in the city of Brunswick. They held significant positions of prestige and power becoming involved in the racial and tribal struggles for supremacy. They became allied with many notable houses including the Viscounts of Herines in Tournai. Notables of the time were William Daman (1540-1591) who was a composer influential in England at Queen Elizabeths court.

After 1650 many Germans left their homeland for the New World. In the U.S. they settled mainly in Pennsylvania, New York,Ohio,California and Illinois. In Canada, German settlements centered around Ontario and the Prairies. Settlers bearing the name Dammann include Edward Daman (settled in Philadelphia 1859) John Daman (settled in Philadelphia 1773) and John F Damann (settled in Philadelphia in 1844)

Notable figures of the modern period were Gustav John Dammin (1911) who was a prominent professor of pathology and medicine at Harvard. He was decorated with the legion of merit, the legion of merit with oak leaf cluster, the Walter Reed Medallion(1971) and the Meritorious Service Award of the Armed Services.

Re: Dr. Lewis H. Dammann - Baltimore

I'd just posted a query about Dr. Leo Dammann, my great great great grandfather, a physician from the Prussia/Austria area. Once I read what you'd posted , this sounds like the same person. Maybe the Leo that my mother had told me was short for Lewis. He had at least 2 daughters - an Augusta & an Annie (Anna). Besides, how many physicians named DAMMANN from the Baltimore area could there be ?

What I know is this : My great great grandfather, LYTTLETON F. JOHNSON 1849-1917, moved to Baltimore from Somerset County when he was in his teens. He became engaged to a daughter of Dr. Dammann, named _________. She died before they were actually married. Lyttleton then courted and became engaged to the daughter named AUGUSTA. They married and had 1 son named HARRY 1882-1927 and 1 daughter named LILLIAN (LIllie) 188?-1955. AUGUSTA died very young, probably around 1884. Lyttleton then married another Dammann daughter, his third, this one named ANNIE (could this be Anna?). They had 6 children : Lyttleton Jr. (LEE) 1884-1949, Maude Elizabeth (MABEL) 1886-1911, Anna Belle Rose 1888-1969, Alice Olivia 1892-1982, Julia 1894-1907, & Howard 1896?-1971. Lyttleton owned a plastering business. They specialized in doing the ornate plaster ceilings that were popular at the time.

Maude Elizabeth Johnson Biddix was my great grandmother. She died 2 days after giving birth to my grandfather. His father later married her sister Anna Belle Rose. Nine of those mentioned above, except AUGUSTA and HOWARD, are buried together @ DRUID RIDGE CEMETERY in Baltimore , Md in a plot across from the masoleum.

Should anyone have any information on
DR. LEO DAMMANN, it would be greatly appreciated.

He would have been born betwenn 1805 & 1840 . From what I have learned, he was a physician from Prussia/Austria/Bavaria- take your pick. He would have lived in either the Maryland or Pennsylvania areas. Likely in Baltimore. He may have been married more than once . One of unions would have produced at least 2 daughters: Augusta (?), and Annie born around 1860-63.
Any information greatly appreciated.

Joyce,
It's a long shot, but they've paid off before. Knowing the old German custom (designed only to confuse and befuddle descendants, you know) of using second or third names instead of the given name throughout life, Hinrich could have been the second or third name given to your Hinrich DAMMANN.

I have in Germany, a Johann Hinrich DAMMANN, b. 9 May 1842, son of Klaus AUGUSTIN (17 Apr 1819 - ?) and Catharina Margaretha DAMMANN (19 Dec 1820 - ?). Catherine Margaretha was a very distant cousin through my MEINKE line, and I don't know what happened to her or her son, but many of her cousins migrated to the U.S. Midwest the same time as your Hinrich.

If you want to follow up on this, they came from the Hanover and Hamburg areas. Let me know if you want more information on this line, and I'll send you what I know.

Gayle Kenfield
I just found your message on RootsWeb concerning Dammann's.
My Great Grandfather was Claus Dammann. His daughter Martha married August Luebke, my grandparents. My Dad was Edmund
Luebke, their son. Would you share information you have? I don't have much and would love to learn anything about the family. Thanks and waiting to hear from you. Marlene.
