ISRAEL DAMMEL
the son of Mr and Mrs John Dammel, was born on 29 August 1885 in Odessa, Russia, which is near eastern Romania and the Black Sea.
In 1893 when eight years of age his pranets and two brothers and a sister decided on leaving this land for more opportunities and freedom, also the severe regulations of the army were in effect at the time.
Travelling by ship and encountering the hardships of the flu and the death of their sister, they arrived in the U.S. and travelled into the midwest, arriving at Eureka, South Dakota, where an uncle lived. He grew to manhood in this community and farmed with his father.
In 1899 the oldest brother Daniel moved to North Dakota to claim a homestead which is located six miles southwest of Medina. Israel also decided to move and claim a homestead for himself. This is located two and one-half miles south of Crystal Springs, which is the present homesite of the second son, Reinhold.
For two years Israel was settled on this land and remembers the time when the day came to bake bread. His bread was ready to bake when his team of horses started running away, so after them he went and on his return which was late in the evening he found one huge loaf of bread.
After these events he decided he better have a wife to tend to these matters. So off to Eureka he went. This is where Israel and Christina Kirschman were married on 21 Feb 1909 and have been married for 56 years celebrating their 50th anniversary in 1959.
With the new wife, a team of horses, wagon, a few personal belongings and two cows which Christina had received as a wedding present fra her parents, they travelled to the homestead south of Springs where Israel had built a sod house and barn for his wife.
Crystal Springs, being a well extablished town at this time with a depot, section house, grocery store, elevator, hatchery, barber shop and a post office. After a number of years the town had the misfortunes of many fires and was never rebuilt.
Through the hardships of the flu in 1918, the droughts and many prairie fires, seven children were born to them, two dying in infancy. The five children remaining are:
Ervin, the oldest, who is married and live sin Tacoma, WA. He is a teacher and has 4 children and 1 grandchild.
Leah the oldest daughter lives in Circle, Montana and is married to Ed Morlock, who is a farmer and electrician and they have three children.
Reinhold, the second oldest is one the homestead as a farmer and is married and has four children.
Ted, the youngest also lives in Tacoma, Wa where he teaches.
Clara, the youngest daughter also lives in Racoma and is married to Murray McLeod, who is a telephone repairman and they have two girls.
In 1942 Mr and Mrs Israel Dammel retired and moved to Medina where they are living a very contented life.
