He lives in Bronkhortspruit, close to Pretoria in South Africa and he told me that he has a brother: Michael who lives in Florida, and a sister, Ann Rowe who he suspects lives in Scotland. Would you be interested in making contact with him?
Damms

My grandmother was a Damms. She was born in Hartlepool .Her father, a mariner, came from Shouldham in Norfolk. The three generations before that also lived in Shouldham, going back to the 1750s. It was a family tradition, probably erroneous, that the Damms originally came from Holland. Any information on Norfolk Damms welcomed, especially Harriet Damms b 1818 and Henry Damms, a carpenter, Harriet's brother, but also recorded as the father of her son Frederick on Frederick's marriage certificate

Hi Paul,
I am not related to the Damms family. I am researching for a friend Jean Damms, whose mother Mary May Damms was born in the Grantham district in1921. She married a Joseph Banks in 1944. Unfortunately Jean was given up for adoption and is looking for some living relative hoping to find a photo of the mother she never knew. I know there are a lot of your relatives in the Sheffield area but cannot find a link. Can you help?
I will send this to you using both of your direct email addresses.

If, one day, you manage to find a connection to your husband's family, do let me know and I will be able to send you details about the people who died in th flood.

Good luck with your searches.

Best Regards
Karen Lightowler

Hello

I am searching for Damms family members from the Chesterfield area in Derbyshire England. My research has taken me back to George Damms, born 1806 in Chesterfield. He first married Elizabeth (b 1811 in Hasland, Derbyshire), then Eliza Lowe (b.1815 in Brampton, Chesterfield). If anyone has any useful information to share, I'd be very grateful to hear from you.

Kind regards
Ali

Hi Linda

Thank you so much for your message. I nearly fell off my chair with excitement!!! It really is the 'icing on the cake' for me to be contacted by a descendant of one of the poor flood victims.

Believe it or not, I am also in touch with another descendant of Walter's so I presume he is your relative too.

My time online tonight is very limited but I promise I will contact you again tomorrow evening when I will send you the details I have.

Thank you again for your message ... until tomorrow (and I have lots to tell!!!)

Best Wishes
Karen

My name is Linda Barber and I think the Walter Damms you are talking about is my great grandmothers brother.

I have his death certificate and I find it so sad. It says he was found exposed on the 12th March 1864 in Nether Hallam and came to his death by drowning. he was 21 years old. He apparently was buried in Stannington Churchyard.

I have not seen his birth cetificate but there has always been a story about GG Elizabeth having a brother who was drowned in in the Dam Flask tragedy.

This is definitly the Walter in your message I didn't know he married and that there was any children. I would love to know more.

Looking forward to hearing from you

Linda Barber

DAMMS - Sheffield Flood 1864

Hi

I am researching the Sheffield Flood (12th March 1864) and am trying to locate the graves of as many of the victims as possible, with a view to then further researching their family line.

One of the poor victims was Walter DAMMS, who died at the age of 20. He worked as a servant in a shop at Malin Bridge owned by Mr Price. All inside were drowned including Damms. He is recorded as being buried in Sheffield but I have not yet managed to track drown the exact cemetery.

I am currently in touch with a living descendant of Walter’s - do you, by any chance, think you may also be related? If so, could you supply any further info of your family line?

Look forward to hearing from you and thanks in anticipation of your reply.

Best Regards
Karen Lightowler
Doncaster, S Yorkshire, England
Damms Family

It is new for me that there is a website to hear something about my name. It is or it was my opinion that the Damms family is a small one most coming from Germany. In the German phone directory you can identify about 32 Damms and I know only 20%. They are most living in North Germany mostly in the state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. I´m living near Heidelberg and I know the Damms roots back to the 19th century. My forefather came from Stettin Prussia (today Poland)and settled over to Rügen (about 1850) as administrator of a church estate in Schmantewitz near Wiek. From the Wiek pastor we get some copies of the church cronicle where we hear of an unknown 4. child. That could be one root of Damms people spread over Germany and the world.

I am looking for anyone related to my mother. According to my family, she died when I was a baby. Her name is Gail Lynn Damms and she was from New York. She married John Ledford and I was born in Florida in 1969. She apparently moved back to New York and left me in the care of my grandparents. I heard she died not long after. If anyone has information about her or relatives, please contact me. Thank you!
