There are some descendants in Canada too. William Robert my grandfather was son of Frederick, son of Alonzo, son of Martin Damon. When William Robert decided to disappear one day around 1927 or so his wife my grandmother Mary Ethel Damon a Canadian returned to Canada with her two daughters Mary Anne and Catherine. Wm Robert was never heard of again.
Martin and Roxy were my third great grandparents. I am a descendant of their son Alonzo and his son Frederick and his son William Robert Damon who was my mothers father.
I read something recently that showed that one of the Gilsons (Jilsons) acquired land in VT and it was about the time that they moved there. The Gilsons were related. John and Hannah the first Damons to arrive in Scituate Mass were children of John Damon and Hannah Gilson of Faversham Kent England. They were sent to America and lived with their uncle William Gilson

Mason Damon/Daman/Dammon b.1803 Maine did have kids!

22 Nov 2012 from Warren Forsythe
Genealogy121 (at) fairpoint.net
-
Page 94 of “Damon Family of Scituate, Mass.” by Richard A Damon Jr. and D. Bradford Damon
says nothing about spouse nor descendants for Mason Damon b. 1803 Fairfax Maine,
Even though lots of descendants are compiled there for his adjacent siblings:
John Damon born 1801, and Rebecca (Damon) Woodward born 1805.
For Mason Damon born 1803, page 94 of above genealogy says only
“#1786 Mason b. Fairfax [Maine] June 26, 1803; settled in Oshkosh, Wisc. (DBD)”
[the DBD refers to co-author D. B. Damon (1901-1992), meaning that Richard A Damon in 2000 reports DBD info., even though the surviving co-author found no confirmation about Oshkosh]
Indeed, 1830 is the last public record I, Forsythe, find that confirms Mason Damon b. 1803 had a wife and family: 1830 US census of Howland, Penobscot Co. Maine, Mason Dammon with aged 20-29 female, two males aged 20-29, male aged 0-4, female aged 10-14.
1840 us census
-
HOWEVER YESTERDAY --I, Forsythe, notice the following 1880 county history
-
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.damman/5/mb.ashx
-
Tells of a Nancy Damon/Damman born Apr 1830 in Maine (Penobscot[?now Piscataquis?] County)
She was on the Douglas/Douglass side, a 1st cousin once removed to her husband; so probably many of these Douglas/Damon kin migrated from Maine to Wisconsin about 1840-1842
-
From the “History of Dane County, Wisconsin-1880” there is a biographical sketch under the ‘Town of Dunn’ for J.F. Douglass, farmer, Sec.27; P.O. Stoughton; was born in Penobscot Co., Maine, in July, 1822, and in the autumn of 1840, he emigrated with his parents to Vermillion Co, IL; in July, 1842, they came to Dane Co., Wis., and located in the town of Rutland, and in 1845 removed to the town of Dunn, and settled on Sec. 14; three years later he bought and removed to this farm in Sec. 27; He now owns 160 acres of Secs. 22 and 27. Mr Douglass has been Town Treasurer one term, and a member of the Town Board two terms. He was married in the town of Rutland, Dane Co., Wis, in 1846, to Nancy Damman, a native of Penobscot Co, Maine, born in April 1830; their children are Robert A, who enlisted in the 8th W.V.I., February 1864 and died at Vicksburg, in June 1864; Jeremiah, who now lives in this town; Marilla, now the wife of William Hulse, who lives in Ohio; Margaret, now Mrs Albert Southerland, who lives in Fremont Co, Iowa; Orra A, now Mrs William Neye, and lives at Syrene, Dane Co, Wis; Cornelia, Mrs George Green, who lives in Nebraska; Carrie, Mason, Edward, Flora and John. Mr & Mrs Douglass are Free-Will Baptists.
-
SO WE SEARCHED FOR RECORDS OF WIFE&KIDS FOR MASON DAMON born 1803:
www.familysearch.org , the Salt Lake Family History Library, cites vital records of Lee, Maine
-two ancestry.com public member trees tell a similar story, sometimes with slight documentation
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/10491922/person/-631002564?ss...=
and the less-credible undocumented assertion that Mason d.1891 Sheridan,Dunn Co.,WI at
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/26013157/person/5001175934?ss...=
-
SO NOW WE POST DESCENDANTS OF SABRINA & MASON DAMON at
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&d...
-
Best to look there to see documentation and updates, but 22 nov 2012 initially it said:
Descendant Register, Generation No. 1
________________________________________
1.
Sherborn Reformatory for Women

Hello,
I'm looking for some information on the Sherborn Reformatory. Looking to see if my great grandmother was a resident there in 1909, when my grandmother was born. My grandmother (Elizabeth Flynn) was born in the Malden Hospital (Medford, Ma)but was listed as ward of the state on the 1910 census. She lived with Maragaret Garrahan of Framingham, MA for about 10 years with another ward Louis Cronin. She had a long relationship with the Garrahan Family. Father Thomas C. Garrahan was involved with the Reformatory so I believe there is a connection. Her birth record doesn't list a father. Any leads on how to find a listing of who was at the reformatory around this time peroid would be awesome. thanks Pat

He probably left NY for Illinois during the civil war. His wife, Susan Wheeler, was a couple of years younger than Lewis and they were both born in NY.
Archelaus Damon was his father. Parmelia Munn was his mother. Both parents were born in Mass.
Did you ever use rootsweb?
Here is a link to the Damon family: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op...

I've been searching, without success, for my great great grandmother, Jennie Leonard Damon. She married Fred Damon in 1880 in Marathon Wi., and I cannot find anything more than her father was James C. Leonard and mother was Margarette. Does anyone have information about Jennie?

These old books are wonderful starting points for research, but often they are vanity books, that sugar coat relationships and elevate ancestors status in communities.
Be sure to seriously check the facts of your ancestors with state historical records as well as publications such as the one referenced.

Virginia Stockton
g grandaughter of Adelaide Damon of New Bedford, MA

Damon's of Scituate, Mass

I recently started tracing my family genealogy, and was suprised to find there were 2 or 3 Damon families who settled here from England.

In just over a week's time, I have found 200+ ancestors and I am eager to find more. I have traced the Damon's back to John Damon (1595-1637), BUT, have traced my GGGrandmothers (Lizzie Spear) all the way back to Ralph de Quesnay (1044-1086).
I have also found 2 Damon cemetaries in Mass with Damon and Spear ancestors.

Does anyone have any more info? I know it's out there! Pics, lithographs, family crests, etc...

I would be glad to send a GEDCOM of what I have in return for other's. LoL, I just have to figure out an easy way to create one first...

Thanks in advance, and I look forward to hearing from everyone.

My contact info is: turbodamon@gmail.com

I have been tracing out the Damon's for only a week so far, and have found over 200 ancestors, one line goes back to an ancestor came to England from France with William the Conquerer in the 11th century.

As far as I can tell, there were 3 main Damon families who came over from England:

One settled/founded Scituate, Mass from Kent, England (my line)...
One settled in Reading, Mass...
The third I am unsure of...

I have found numerous pedigrees, cemetaries, etc with information on my and the other Damon families' lineage.

If you know your great grandfather Damon's birth year and his wife's birth year, try Googling their name and birth date. You'll be surprised at what you may find!

This is a link to a book titled "Damon Memorial: Notices of Three Damon Families":

http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89062874854;page=ro...
