my grandmother was a Danahar from the same boxing family, she was a sister. The proper spelling is Danaher,I expect you know this, the very first poster advertising the match the spelling was wrong as Arther won he said it would be bad luck to change the name. Arthur;s wife is still alive and living in Spain not far from where I live.

The John (DOB 1874) and Elizabeth Danaher (DOB 1872) that I am looking for were in Connecticut USA by 1900 and were two years apart in age; Elizabeth being the elder of the two. John appears to be living with his sister's family only for the 1900 census. I can't tell when he arrived in America but I am guessing somewhere around 1900. It seems logical that he would be living with his married sister's family because he had nowhere else to stay in America at that time. Elizabeth gave birth to Florence who grew up to marry George Conrad Steil.

Nancy;
I share your belief that the parents of your gggrandfather Michael J. Danaher are not Michael Danaher & Bridget Carey of Reenavanna, Limerick.
Michael and Bridget had 11 children in Ireland between 1925 and 1847. In 1858 Bridget traveled to Australia with 6 of her children and 1 grandson.
Michael & Bridget did have a son Michael. He was christened in the Doon Catholic church on 27 Dec 1844. A working theory is he died in Ireland before many of the family went to Australia in 1858.
It appears your gggf Michael J. Danaher was born about 1832/34 which would not be a good match with the Michael Danaher born near Doon.
regards Pat Morgan

Michael Danaher is my great-great grandfather, through his son Thomas' (b Rock Island Ill) daughter Margaret (b Minnesota). I've become skeptical about Michael Danaher's lineage because there are so many with the same name, and too little documentation to prove linage-such as birth or death certificates. Can you verify that Michael's parents were Michael and Bridget? I found them on census materials but even then the names of children were frequently the same so cannot in fact say they are his antecedents... I'd like for us to be "cousins" but until I find the elusive bit of confirmation I just can't be sure.

His father is also Michael Danaher and mother Bridget Carey both from Reenavanna, Limerick. I believe that at some point Bridget went to Australia with her children and other family members. My grandfather was also named Michael Danaher.. there are A LOT! Let me know anything else you know and how you are related :-)

Raychel

Hello,
I've started a group at Facebook for anyone interested in pooling Danaher history, and (I hope) sorting out some of the family lines. I've seen good results for other family groups, and maybe it will be worthwhile. Joining Facebook is very simple, free, and as private as you like (you don't even need to use your real name). Look for the name of the group 'Danahers of County Limerick'; click on 'join this group'. Nothing much there yet beyond my info - I'd welcome suggestions and whatever you'd like to add. If it's not for you, there's no obligation - just 'leave group' and 'de-activate membership'.
Thanks!

Hi! I'm not sure if I can directly send you the link - maybe I could if I was an Ancestry.com subscriber. If you sign up for Facebook (www.facebook.com) I can tell you how to find us there. Once you've entered your name, email address, password and whatever else they require, you'll have a page with a blue bar across the top. All the way on the right, you can enter "Danahers of County Limerick" in the search...and then you should be able to see the group page. You can look it over, decide if you want to join - there will be a list of options on the right side of the page. Be sure to click on "see all" on the right of the Discussion Board, the Wall, and Members list.
Let me know if I can help in any way. I hope you'll join!

They both stayed with us in Oregon, USA in the 70's through a Lions Club excange program. My father Walt has turned 80 years old and had been trying to locate Jim without any success. If you can be of assitance it would be fantastic and make us and especially an old man very happy. Regards, Tom

John Danaher married Margaret Rodger/Rogers in Tuomgraney County Clare in 1855 before they travelled to Australia - they both died at Little River Victoria. I believe they had at least 4 children John Catherine William and Margaret(who was my Great grandmother - my father's maternal grandmother).
Bye
Col

Hi, Yes, that is the same John Danaher. I have differnet spellings of the Griffey name. I do have a lot of names for this family. What is your name? Your John and my Bridget were brother and sister. Hope to hear from you soon. I live in Vicroria. Bye Kathy Toohey.

Only just starting my research and came across your post of 11 Aug 2000 re: John Danaher and Ann Griffy (although the spelling I have is Griffey). You mention their children I believe my great great great grandfather is John born 1831 in Tuomgraney County Clare Ireland and details I have I think he married there in 1855 Died Jan 1911 in Little River Victoria Australia. Any details on the family would be a help.
Col

Yes, I am still trying to find information on the Ct. Danahers. I finally got my grandmother's birth certificate to verify Mortimer James and Elizabeth Danaher. I've had a terrible time trying to find out what happened to Elizabeth's brother John who was living with them in CT. Mrs. Mortimer Hatch would be my great-grandmother Elizabeth, who had a daughter Florence who had my father Thornton (Ted).

Hi!

I'm not sure if you are still looking for info about the CT Danahers. If you are, I may have a small bit of info for you. My great-grandmother was a Danaher from Meriden, CT.

There's an obituary here on Ancestry for a Patrick Danaher of Hartford, who died 15 Feb 1901. (See the Hartford Courant newspaper) The obit mentions a Mrs Mortimer Hatch, along with a few other nieces & nephews.

I wasn't sure if that Mrs Mortimer Hatch mentioned was relevant to you. Was Mortimer James' first or middle name perhaps? I think one of the nephews mentioned (Cornelius J. Danaher) was my gr-grandmother's brother or nephew.

In fact, just about all of the Danahers in the Meriden/Hartford area seem to be related in some way-I just haven't figured out exactly how, yet!

For birth, marriage & death info, check the Archdiocese of Hartford for baptismal/marriage/burial records. The VR from the towns can be hard to get, if they exist.

If you have any other info, please let me know-I'd love to find out more about this family!
I am trying to trace Danahers from my father, born Thorton George Steil, in Connecticut, and his mother, Florence Hatch. According to the 1900 census, James and Elizabeth Hatch were the parents of Florence, Charles, Mable, and Joseph. Elizabeth's brother, John F. Danaher, then 26 years old, was living with the family in Connecticut.
I cannot find birth records of John or Elizabeth. Although the census says that John was born in Connecticut, I wonder why a 26 year old man would live with his married sister and her family, unless he had recently arrived from Ireland, and didn't have a place to stay.
There is a ship's record of a John Danaher, then 25, coming over from Ireland. In 1903 there is a ship's record of a William Danaher coming over from Ireland into Boston, who was staying with his brother John Danaher. I don't know if these two records are about the same John F. Danaher.
any information about Connecticut Danahers or Hatches would be appreciated.

Hello Danahers
I live in toronto, I have searched out danahers on www.Ancestry.ca (note... dot... CA) when you apply Danaher , there are many groups of Danaher across Eastern Canada, early 1800's to late 1800's, encompassing cities , like London Ontario Canada, Toronto Ontario Canada, Cornwall Ontario Canada, Montreal Quebec Canada, Quebec City Quebec Canada and Lastly St. John NewBrunswick Canada along with a few through pier 21 Halifax Nova Scotia Canada. Alot of you are looking for Danahers and not thinking of this aspect of the lines, alot of Danahers did come through the Lower canadian ports Quebec City, Montreal, St. John and Halifax and then migrated to points onwards to USA and western Canada. I will Post all of what I have on the FACEBOOK website for the group called DANAHERS OF COUNTY LIMERICK as a resource for some. The Broderick/Danahers are from ST. Columban Parish of Cornwall Ontario and have a small connectiont to some Montreal Danahers and mostly connected to New Brunswick Danahers. New Brunswick families are connected to Danahers are names like Shanahan , Mahoney, Daley, Graty, Prine, and Nugent. The Cornwall family has connection to Broderick, Murphy, Neenan and Carey(Casey or Lacey not sure by calligraphy). Ancestry.ca in Canada is cheap and I suggest some to take a look as it has alot of information...

Hi,

Ryan, your story about two brothers not speaking to each other for many years sounds like my grandfather (John Danaher) and his brother Mossy (Maurice), who headed for the states, although I dont know anything about a surname dispute.

I know you posted this a long time ago, and have probably cleared up an queries you have by now. I dont know if the John Danaher you know of is my great grandfather as the date of birth you list would make him 79 when my grandfather was born. I know he was elderly when my granfather was born but thats extreme! And it would make him 93 when he died. I dont know anything about a VC (I presume you mean Victoria Cross) which I presume would have been awarded during the Crimean War.

Hope this can help both of us!

Leonora.
