Hello Roz,

Looking at the Dancey family tree at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/15671340/family/familyview
I do not see an Isabella Dancey, but perhaps some people are not included. You might write a message to the owner of that tree at Ancestry.com. I believe that a son of G A Dancey is probably alive, and that his name might be Howard. He probably lives in Alberta, Canada.

Joel

Hi Roz,

Agreed with Penny (our researches cover almost identical ground) I have not found any connection as yet between the two distinct groups of Danc(e)y families, although some of the Wiltshire one's further 'corrupted' their surname to Dauntsey. If there is a connection I would suggest it is pre 1550.

Hi Roz,

I have not seen any English records of Dancy's emigrating to Ireland nor of them removing to Wiltshire from Sussex or vice versae. Some Sussex Dancys moved to Gloucestershire in the 19th century but I have not come across records in your timeframe.

Hi I've been wondering if the Dancey/Dancy's of Sussex/Surrey are connected to the Dancey clan of Gloucestershire/ Wiltshire. And indeed if any of them had ancestors who emigrated to Ireland as part of the post Cromwell settlments. My actual interest is the Irish Danceys, but they themselves were immigrants by mid/late 1600's

Roz Roberts

The Early John DANSEY Virginia Land Patents, 1636-8

It seems rather clear that the John DANCY shown in the 1624/5 Census as Sir George SANDYS servant was still living in the period 1636-8, as he is named in four Virginia land Patents from this period. These Patents are:

John DANSEY's Patent of 31 Mar 1636 for 100 acres in James City County
Land Office Patents No. 1, 1623-1643 (v.1 & 2), p. 363 (Reel 1).
http://image.lva.virginia.gov/LONN/LO-1/001/001_0365.tif

John DANSEY's Patent of 04 Jun 1636 for 350 acres in James City County (Clay banke)
Source: Land Office Patents No. 1, 1623-1643 (v.1 & 2), p. 362 (Reel 1).
http://image.lva.virginia.gov/LONN/LO-1/001/001_0364.tif

John DANSEY's Patent of 25 May 1637 for 100 acres in James City County
Source: Land Office Patents No. 1, 1623-1643 (v.1 & 2), p. 431 (Reel 1).
http://image.lva.virginia.gov/LONN/LO-1/001/001_0433.tif

John DANSEY and Edmund MORECROFT's Patent of 20 May 1638 for 700 acres in James City County
Source: Land Office Patents No. 1, 1623-1643 (v.1 & 2), p. 559 (Reel 1).
http://image.lva.virginia.gov/LONN/LO-1/001/001_0564.tif

*

The former tract Claybank seems to be near the area where the John Tyler Memorial Highway crosses the Chickahominy River:

http://msrmaps.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=12&Z=18&X=41...

A place called Claybank Landing is still actually shown on today's map!

The first three patents generally describe locations "Northwest" of the Chickahominy, which is a little confusing. The river is flowing in a generally Southerly direction at this point, though it generally flows from West to East separating Charles City and New Kent Counties. The "North Bank" would generally be what we now think know as James City County and New Kent County. The South and West Bank of the Chickahominy is that area now known as Charles City County. So these patents may have actually been on the west bank of the River in what is now Charles City County.

The 1638 Patent for 700 acres seems to be about four miles to the North. This land seems to abut land of William HAYE, as well as Theodore MOYSE (2,000 acres Patented on 23 May 1637).

Amongst the servants of Sir George SANDYS, Treasurer, of the Virginia Company, enumerated during the Census of 1624/5 is a John DANCY, who is shown to have arrived with SANDYS on the ship George in 1621.

See:

“The original lists of persons of quality: emigrants, religious exiles ..., 1600-1700”, by John Camden HOTTEN (1874)
http://books.google.com/books?id=VN_A5wlsjQQC&dq=starlin... [at page 234]

Has anyone identified this John DANCY/DANCEY/DANSEY and connected him to an English DANCY family?

I am in the process of tracing my family roots starting with the "Birt's" in Illinois to the "Dancey" family who came from Ireland to Canada to Illinois.

Right now I need to find the date of death of James Dancey, Sr., the marriage date to Barbara (?), place of marriage and Barbara's maiden name.

Also, how and why did Arthur Dancey change his last name to "Birt?" The Arthur Dancey Birt I am talking about lived and died in Decatur, Ill. and married Mary Rice, who died, and he later married Florence R. Sowash.

Any and all info will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Walter Dancey

Hi Just send this on a revisit of the board.
Robert Gynn's post is also relevant. The Walter Dancey of Bailieboro that Robert mentions, (born about 1796) was a son of John & Margaret Dancey of Co Monaghan. They also had a son Dr Edward Dancey who emigrated to Canada & lived in Malahide twp Elgin Co. So that Walter was a brother to Dr Edward. Walter married Mary Adams & had 4 children (2 of whose names are not known from the sources I've found)His 2 daughters were Sarah & Eliza, named for some of Walter's siblings. Sarah was married in 1850 (I think but I may have incorrectly remembered the date)in Ireland
So it's possible that one of Walter's children was a son who emigrated to Canada.

I hope this may help
Roz

Hi Roz,

Thanks for writing! That sounds very likely. Since my original posting I'm about 95% sure that Walter's parent were named James and Mary (although those are pretty common names). I think Mary was born about 1827, so her mother being born in 1804 is good.

Are you related to this family?

Can you please send your pdf to jenancon@yahoo.com?

Thanks for your help!
Jennifer

Hi
Basically, it's possible your Walter James Dancey is the grandson of Margaret Dancey born 1804 in Ireland who married John Parker & emigrated to Canada. Her daughter Mary married back into a Dancey family (James Dancey) He could have had a son Walter James - as Mary Parker/Dancey had a brother Walter & also an Edward, hence the namings.
Just a possibility?

I have a .pdf file (extract from another family history) that gives some extra detail about the Mary Dancey born 1804 in Ireland - it won't attach here!
Roz Roberts

I'd like to talk to you. As far as I can tell, the Samuel Dancey who was married to Julia Anne Dancey (nee: Harrison) was my great grandfather. To the best of our knowledge Samuel was born in Ontario in 1845. His Father was a James Dancey, born in Ireland in about 1824.

If we are correct, one of Samuel's sons was Francis Alexander Dancey, born in 1880, who moved to Saskatchewan in the early 1900's. He had three sons, one of which was my Father.

If we are on the same track here we should be working together to see what we can find out.

Please feel free to e-mail me at bkdancey@bkdanceyinvestigations.com

Brian Dancey
Smithers, British Columbia
Hello, I think Samuel Dancey could be my great grandfather. My grandmother on my fathers side was Ann (maybe Gladys Ann Galloway (Dancey) from MInden Ontario. Her mother was Julie A Harrison (Dancey) and from what I can track down Ann Dancey (my grandmother) had brothers named Frank, Jim, Stanley, and sisters Sade, Girtie, Nell, Ethel. I don't have much to go on. Would appreciate any help on making a connection Thanks, Larry Galloway
Hi,

I think we are related at least to some extent. My father was Francis Earl Dancey and he was born in Saskatchewan. His father was Frank Alexander Dancey who was born in Ontario. I beleive Samuel Robert Dancey was somehow related to Frank, but I am not exactly sure how. I have been trying to find out. I am not sure where it goes from there. I understand the name originated in either Ireland or England. Some say the family came over Canada and that is how it got into the Ontario country, and some say they first landed in the eastern USA and then some moved North to Ontario. I would sure like to find out. I do know there are a number of Danceys in the eastern USA. I have found records of them in Virginia and that country back in the 1700's. You can contact me directly at bkdancey@bkdanceyinvestigations.com

I guess your grandfather would have been born in US or Canada? I don't know if there were many/any Dancy/Dancey's born in Ireland as late as 1915-1920. I'm not presently substantially searching In US/Canada, as I've traced my relatively late emigrants to US?Canada & the direct lines have died out (although I'm still missing some dates of deaths). The only possible Canadian connection may be Glen Allen Dancey, a flight seargent in the RCAF who was based in N Yorks England in WW2 & was killed in 1944 aged 26. His parents (William Hedley Dancey & Mabel Dancey) lived in Blackie Alberta, & his wife Lillian Gladys in Huxley Alberta. Glen may have been a cousin/nephew to my grandmother Isabella Dancey, who moved from Dublin to the north of England in 1924. Any info you may come across/could find on this connection would be very welcome

Roz

This is a correction to my posting from 19 Feb 2002. I believe this Samuel Dancey was born in 1839; his brother James (no Henry) was born Jan 6, 1832; & his brother Edward was born in 1830--all born in County Cavan, Ireland, townland of Rakeevan in Bailieborough. Their father was John Dancey & their mother Margaret. This information is from the Church of Ireland, Bailieborough (from Bruce Guynn), as well as from the County Cavan Genealogical Research Centre, a Member of the Irish Family History Foundation.

I don't have info on your Pockrage, but I wouldn't be surprised if yours & mine were related. My Pockridge Dancey was married in 1846 in County Laois to Martha Atkins. His father was a Richard Dancey who was a farmer. I have no idea whether Richard Dancey was from Armagh but could have been as there certainly one farmer family line in Armagh who had a Richard in each generation.
As far as I can tell, my Pockridge Dancey was born in 1821, where in Ireland I don't know but possibly in Armagh/Baillieboro. It's possible he was a younger brother of your Pockrage, if Pockrage's parent didn't emigrate in 1812 with him. I will need to do some serious & probably lengthy research via parish registers to find out more.
Sorry I can't help more at this stage.

Roz

Edward O. and Walter J. Dancey, Buffalo, NY, Canada b. 1860s

I have found Edward O. Dancey and Walter J. Dancey in the 1890 Buffalo, NY Directory. I am trying to determine if they are brothers. I’d also like to find information about their parents.

I believe this Walter is my g-grandfather, who was born in Canada around 1865. And I believe Edward was also born in Canada around 1860.

Any clues would be appreciated.
I have a ggg grandfather who was named Pockrage Dancey/Dancy who was born in July of 1812. He is supposed to be from Co. Armagh. He emigrated to Canada when he was 12 years old. Do you have any info on this man or his son, John Dancy, who was born in 1836, in So. Crosby twp., Leeds, Ontario Canada?
