There may not be a connection. As I said, your tree would only be of interest to me if it included Sam and or Maggie. I have no info on their ancestors, I can only tell you they lived and probably died in Pickens County. Sam was born about 1850, Maggie about 1855.

She asked that folks email her with info, but neglected to provide an e-mail address.
Do you happen to know if Maggie was Henry's second wife or when or where they married? I have not been able to find a census record for Henry and Maggie in Boligee, including the newly released 1940 census.

On my g-g-grandmother's death record it says that her mother's name is Barbara Dancy. Barbara married Joseph Wilson December 29, 1837 (possibly Canada). In the 1851 and 1861 Ontario Census they are living in Manvers, Durham, Ontario. In 1871 Barbara is living with her son, Edward Wilson and his family in Manvers. On the three cenus records it records Barbara's place of birth as Ireland. Have you come across a Barbara Dancy in your search?

Re: Dancy Of Alabama

Hello, and sorry, your question omitted dates and data and factual data so I can't help you, easily. Let me start by asking what connections do you think you have found, so far, to English born Dancy members? If you're looking for European ancestry Dancy members in England, check the message boards, and look for posts by a couple of Dancy researchers out of England for leads. This is the origin of the surname, I believe. Note also: My tree is private, not public...but I continue. First, there are few living members of my 'primary' tree, and no living members of the few Dancy members in my primary tree. Dancy is insufficient in my tree to be a primary family, just peripheral, but included as are all other related by marriage parties. So, except for possible, but unlikely, discoveries once the 1942 edition of the census is fully 'out there', the Dancy line died out in the USA with just an handful of 'my' relatives in the 1920's and 1930s. Just recently, I found myself on a public tree which contained a lot of made up garbage and the next day someone messaged me, unsolicited, telling me who was my own great grandmother was and they had another tidbit which was incorrect, also, about one of my grandfathers--both of those items combined with the first had my head spinning.

As for Dancy in Alabama.. I am aware that there are SOME African or partial African (mixed race, ie "Mulatto" -ancestry Dancy members, IF THIS perhaps applies to your query. So: I am aware of those existing, is this the case for you? Does this circumstance apply to you? If such is your case, you might be best advised to check TX, GA, Mississippi, and SC for leads as well as Alabama. ( perhaps ). I once found a white family Dancy living in either the USVI or BVI in the 'modern' ERA but was unable to trace that person and family to 1850 England.

What I think: I think a European Dancy from England made it to SC or ALA or GA and way back may have 'acquired' some African ancestry---either as a merged race issue or as just former free'd men or else slaves taking up or using the Dancy surname after about 1866-ish. This seems possible, but i never even started any investigation into this and have no reason to think about it, or work on any of that.

Big suggestion: search every cem. and death and marriage record for the names you do know, if any. Once you find some living relative you can trace backwards to land ownership, estate settlement, burials and marriages, etc.

A woman in England whose name is Penny Akers can be found in the message boards under surname Dancy. She and I corresponded several years ago on the boards. She provided me with the living location confirmation of John Dancy in the village of Redhill in 1840 range helped me solve the Dancy riddle as to the minor connection in my primary tree to surname Dancy. I was unable to get the info easily back then, at that time, I had no ability to see, decipher, and understand the (weird, strange, unusual) English 1851 (first year) census, etc. (keep reading). Ancestry was much less complete, intelligent, and accurate about ten to twelve years ago in my opinion. Thank goodness you have much better tools here today to help you.

Advice: don't import public trees, info without confirming most of it and do check your relations by visiting a LDS family history library and look at their research tools as well as the Ancestry tools. Discount anything you find on Rootsweb and many other websites as being marginally accurate, in my opinion. Find a location, a parcel of land, and some burials or a marriage of the people you have, first.

My Dancy few are derived from: Mary Ann Simmons born in Charlwood, England in the approximate time frame of 1841-ish and baptised at St. Mary C.E. at Reigate married in England John Dancy born England, married at ( I think ) St. Mary Magdaline (same) C. E.. They had a girl, Adelaide, and a son, William Henry Dancy. The kids were very young in 1868 when they left Charlwood (near Gatwick Airport these days) for the USA. Those four, as a unit, arrived July 14, 1868 to New York on a ship coming from Liverpool and went directly to Oregon in the company of about six surnamed Simmons relations, including her parents, William Simmons and wife. This info is already on the message board posts of long ago. John Dancy's obit said he was a pioneer planing mill man of Oregon. It is true he ran a planing mill on Commercial St in Salem, Oregon. They can be found in the 1870 Oregon, 1880 Salem Oregon, 1900 Salem Oregon Fed census.

Frank Dancy 1910 Census Lonoke, Arkansas

I'm searching for the connection between Frank Dancy and my great grandparents Caesar and Judy Parker.

On the 1910 Census I see a 10 year old Frank Dancy, a nephew to the Parker's, living with them and their children in Keo, Lonoke, Arkansas.

I found a World War I Draft Registration Card. 1917-1918 for Frank Dancy. On this card Caesar Parker is listed as Frank's employer. Frank's nearest relative is liste as George Dancy of Keo, Lonoke.

Frank dancy's birth date is October 3, 1899 and he lived in Keo, Lonoke Arkansas when he filled out the draft registration card Sep 12, 1918. The microfilm roll number or registration roll number in Lonoke County, Arkansas, is 1530475. In Washington, D.C. at the National Archives and Records Administration the number is M1509, 4,582 rolls.

I later found a 1920 Census record that has Frank Dancy age 21, living alone in Hampton, Lee, Arkansas. This record states Frank was born in Arkansas and his father and mother were born in North Carolina.

These are the only records I have been able to find on Frank Dancy. I am interested in knowing who his parents were, how they are related to Caesar and Judy Newton Parker, and what became of Franks's family and Frank for that matter.

Any information on any of the persons listed above will be greatly appreciated.

I am Joanetta Parker Counce and I can be reached here on ancestry by Joanetta4 or my personal email address is joanie1968@gmail.com.

Sincerely.

HI again
Just got to the end of the thread! The Seaver/Pockrich tie up rings a bell & I can't locate where I might have filed the note on it (it came from some of the information I got from Bruce Dancy & the research that ?Marg Hunter's father had done)
Basically from memory The Seaver's were part of teh protestant ascendancy (as were the Pockriches) & there was reference to a marriage between those families in early/mid 1700's in Irealnd. So I don't think there is a Seaver/Dancy/Pockrich tie up.

If I find the reference, I'll post it.
Roz

Hi Just to say that there is a lot of partial & sometimes inaccurate information out there.
I have taken a lot of care with researching my Dancy/Dancey Irish family, & know that where I've got to is substantiated. My gx2 grandfather was Pockridge Dancy born 1810-1812 (according to the 1821 censuis & his Police service records) in Drumbo townland, Annagelliff parish Co Cavan. (The 1821 census transcripts have the family under the name of Darcey, but the photocopies of the original entries do show Dancy) I knew Pockridge's father was Richard Dancy & mother was Mary Foster, I wasn't aware Richard Dancy was from Dublin - can anyone shed more light on this (sources etc)? (Pockridge moved to Dublin some time after 1861) & his son Richard lived in Dublin from about 1874/5) I have more information on extended family.
About the origin of the name Pockridge/Pockrage etc. It is believed that it is a surmname originating from the POCKRICH family - a Dancy is believed to have married a Pockrich in the mid 1600's in Ireland & thus predates the Miss Pockeridge marriage in Armagh 1787.

There is also another "stray" Pockridge in Canada b between 1799-1787 who lived in Vaughn twp in the 1851 census - so far no one seems to be researching this family.
Roz

Hi to you all (distant Dancey cousins of some degree or other)

I would be interested too. One of my Dancey ancestors is Pockridge b about 1809-1812 (who stayed at home in Ireland!)I have a digitised copy of a photo of him from about 1850 the original was in the possession of the late AW Bernard Simpson who shares Pockridge as an ancestor. (I don't know what's happened to the original now that he's died)
I'm happy to share my Pockrage shot in case there are similarities with anyone in your pix.

Does anyone have any face recognition software that might be able to spot facial likenesses?

It would be interesting if we could make some connection from the old pictures.
I too have a stack of old photos (but not as old as yours)from deceased realtives but I've no idea even if there are extended family or just the family of my aunt's friends.

Keep me in touch
thanks
Roz

Hi Lin, Marg, & Libby:

It has been some time since we were in touch (Lin & Marg). I have very recently (last week) come across a photo album that my Mom had - I actually found it in my basement in a pile of stuff we are storing for my Mom & Dad. There are dozens of pics, obits, & lots of etc., dating from very recent back to the late 1800's. The most common names are Dancy, Kyle, Coon, Derbyshire, Delong..... Unfortunately, there are many pics with unidentified subjects. My plan is to catalogue and scan/digitize - as soon as I can. You are welcome to any/all of the info.

Hoping to hear from all of you.

Doug Heys

Emailed you, Linda, boy has a lot happened since 2000. My Aunt Sharon (Walter's daughter) and I went to Canada and met some distant relatives, spent some time with Reggie's wife, Edna and visited the house on Shuter street. That's been years now. A distant cousin visited Texas and a guy in New York sent me some pretty extensive genealogical research he'd done. Several blanks filled in but it's been a long time and haven't heard from Edna so don't know if she's still around and what's become of the Shuter street house and the treasure of photos she had. I did, however, walk away with my grandfather's Bible.

Hi, Kenpereyma!
All this is very interesting, but I can't see how your family is connected with mine: why (and how) did you pick a picture from my private family tree? It shows an Angelo or Bernardo Milana, Italian, 19th century, never been abroad in his life.
If you have found any relation of this man with your family, I would also be glad to know how we are related.
Thank you.

Hi Lin,

More food for thought....

I had a look at the name Jonathan Seaver following my earlier reply this evening and found the following, which must surely relate to a descendant of the couple Jonathan Seaver and Miss Pockrage ...

England & Wales Christening Records, 1530-1906
A female named Maria Isabelle Nicolina Seaver, who was born abt 1856 was christened in Wivelsfield, Sussex, England on 6 Jul 1856, and her parents were Jonathan Pockrich Seaver and Maria Nicolina Seaver.
Then there is another entry for her with exactly the same details but a different date (23 Jan 1857) and this time ("St Nicholas") is added.

Then on 22 Aug 1867 in Brighton, Sussex, England [no further info shown as to wherein] there was a baptism of a child named Jonathan Pockrich Seaver with his father named the same ie, Jonathan Pockrich Seaver.

Then on 27 July 1873 there was another baptism in Brighton (in the St Peter collection), Sussex, England for a Thomas Charles Patrick Seaver son of Jonathan Pockrich Seaver and Maria Nicolina Seaver

What is interesting in this information is that the village of WIVELSFIELD, Sussex, England was a KNOWN "Dancy" zone (especially with the surname spelt that particular way) especially in the earlier part of the 1800's.

How intriguing!...

And some more information I just found was that when their daughter Maria Isabelle Nicola Seaver died (on 30 August 1937 as a spinster of 45 Cromwell Road Hove, in the county of Sussex in England) the executor of her estate was a Rev. Percy gibbens Browning, clerk)

Now this Jonathan Seaver was found in 1901 in Croydon England as father in law to a Frank Sachs who had married his daughter Louisa [Seaver] and Louisa was born in Brighton Sussex England abt 1861. Jonathan was shown as being born abt 1825 in Ireland, a widower aged 76 occupation Retired Schoolmaster. I'm hazarding a guess that This 1825 born JPS was a son or grandson of the JS who married Miss Pockridge and am a bit surprised that there was no mention of a Miss Pockridge in the following story:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/seaver/messages/14.html

The 1901 census is the only one where I have found him with a simple search of Jon* Seaver.

What do you think?

If only we could find a Pockridge=Dancy marriage...
Penny

Hi Lin,

I have very limited access to Irish records - as I state I'm happy to help with English research - but Pockradge Dancy came from Ireland. His census returns state that.

There are 27 entries for him though in Ancestry trees (just counting the entries in public trees) and I dont know whether you have made contaact but one tree has his parents as a Richard Dancy of Dublin who married a Mary Foster.

(There seems to be one born in Cavan Ireland abt 1810 and one born abt 1812 in Armargh Ireland)

there are also websites with information about Pockrage/Pockridge Dancy (although you have probably seen these already):
www.dancy.net/culage/danceyp.htm
www.dancy.net/culage/dancyp.htm

Sorry I couldn't be of much help

Penny

Hi again Lin

I had a little think this evening and thought I would look to see if anybody else in the censuses (on Ancestry) also had a first name similar to Pockrage/Pockridge and strangely enough I found no-one! That leads me to wonder whether the name Pockrage[+variations] was originally used as a surname. (People could inherit surnames of their close / not so distant ancestors as first names).

So I had a look for Pockrage[+variations] as a surname and I just got the one result, funnily enough in county Armagh Ireland (the area I mentioned in my other reply to you this morning). So here are the details, and if no use to you in their own merit at least they prove the was a family with that surname in Armagh.

Index of Irish marriages 1771-1812
On page 360:
Miss Pockeridge married Jonathan Seaver in 1787 (ref 560)
On page 397:
Seaver, Jonathan, Herthall, co. Armagh = Pockeridge, Miss nr Monaghan Oct 1787 (ref 560)

p.s. that is all there is in the index and I cannot advise any further steps to follow unfortunately.

regards
Penny

The John Dancy who was the son of Edward Dancy and Susannah Vannoy was born on 20 April 1794 and thus was only 16 years of age in 1810. Edward Dancy was in Wilkes county NC at the time of the 1810 U.S. census and his son John was apparently with him in Wilkes county.

Source for birth date of John Dancy:
Homer Eiler, "Our Ancestors, A Brief Record of These Families: Dancy Servis Bassett Davis Holman Vannoy" (Printed and published by James S. Dancy, Grenola, Kansas, 1928) p. 6.

I have that John Dancy married 1) Rachel Johnson on 15 Oct 1816 in Wilkes Co., and 2) Frances Kirby, widow of Jeremiah Judd, on 30 May 1835 in Wilkes Co., but do not have a source listed for the information.

I am tracing the Dancy/Dancey Family. In particular, I'm looking for John Dancy who married Abigal Loyd (1792- 1843) and Frances R. (1802-1872). Both wives are buried and I have the church record from Prospect Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Rowan County, NC. There is no maiden name given for Francis. There is no John Dancy listed in the records. I'm trying to figure out who is this John Dancy and his parentage.

John and Abigal had the following child: Enos (b. 1819, d. 1892.

Is this John Dancy the son of Edward Dancy and Susannah Vannoy?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Susan Barrow Spaulding

Hi "kenpereyma",

I've looked at your Hennings Family Tree with your William Dancey born 1797 in Ireland and did some little bits of research that you may not have discovered yet. Wallace Edward Dancey, b. 1875 who you referred to, if I remember correctly when I looked at his birth reg on Ancestry yesterday evening, was born in Canada, but described himself of Irish origin in census returns. That was not meant to indicate he was born in Ireland though. Please forgive me if I am mistaken.

William's wife Helen/Ellen's maiden-name appeared to be Creighton according to her daughter Susan's death registration.

Another way of spelling the surname Creighton was "Crichton".

I thought that William and Helen might have married in Scotland as there is a tendancy for brides to marry in their hometown, but I could not find any marriages for a Helen Creighton or Helen Crichton to a William Dancy in Scottish parish record collections.

I just found these marriages in Scotland which should help you rule out any other Scottish Helen/Ellen Crightons/Creightons:
No Date Surname Forename Spouse Name Frame No Sex Parish City/County
11/02/1825 CRICHTON HELEN JOSEPH KIRKPATRICK/FR270 F TORTHORWALD /DUMFRIES
13/07/1826 CRICHTON HELEN ALEXR. I imagine there must be information on the internet regarding how to start researching Irish roots. Unfortunately, I have not come across any information about your branch before, but I hope you find some meat to put on the bones soon. Perhaps when you get looking for information regarding William's wife Helen's side some more information might turn up.

Kind regards,
Penny

Hi Penny. Hope you can help us. We have begun researching the family history of the Saskatchewan Dancey's, and hope you can make a connection for us. My wife, Corinne, who is a Dancey descendant, believes that the Saskatchewan Danceys who settled around Star City are somehow connected to the same Dancey line as that of Dr, Edward Dancey, b. 1800, in Ontario. The Saskatchewan Danceys are linked to William Dancey, b. around 1800. His son, William, b. 1840, married Caroline Cox, b. 1842. One of their sons, Wallace Edward Dancey, b. 1875, was born in Ireland, but came to Saskatchewan in the early 1900's. He married Janet Galloway, and from them came an extensive line of Danceys and their kin. But I am as yet unable to make a definitive connection between the two sides of the family. Help.

HI Nora,

For some reason, I did not find an alert to this message, and just happened to be passing by over a year later!

I found the birth - which you may already know about - but cannot find any more references to him in the Canadian censuses / records available on Ancestry nor any US records. I cannot even find him in the 1881 Canadian census, although I can find his parents then.

Ontario, Canada Births, 1869-1911
Name: William Earnest Daney
Date of Birth: 3 Mar 1879, Gender: Male, Birth County: York
Father's name: Henry Nehemiah Daney
Mother's name: Marion Christina Miller
Archives of Ontario Microfilm: MS929_41

Unfortunately, despite liasing with Murray Burke and another researcher in Canada who are researching this branch, I have not been able to trace any living Dancy families descended from Henry Nehemia's line!

Hi Myra,

Here are the details:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915
Name: Henry John Dancy, Year of Registration: 1880, Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep, District: Kingston, County: Surrey, Volume: 2a, Page: 298

England and Wales Marriages: Henry J Daney* to Emily Dixon or Sarah Dixon in Croydon, Surrey, 1913, Vol 2a, Page 789. Other name on the page is Henry G King, meaning he either married Emily or Sarah.

(Daney* is most probably Dancy on original as it was often mistranscribed as Daney and Henry J Daney lived in the Epsom, Surrey area)

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915
Name: Gladys A S Dancy, Year of Registration: 1914
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun, Mother's Maiden Name: Dixon. District: Epsom, County: Surrey, Volume: 2a, Page: 33
(no other Dancy birth's with Dixon as mother's maiden-name).

I believe Henry J Dancy died in 1939 in Surrey, England. He may have travelled between US and Canada.

Henry John Dancy's parentage has remained unknown by us Dancy researchers, because he only appears in the UK censuses under such guises as "nurse child" or nephew, but there is no instance of him being found with a parent.

If you wish to apply for Henry's birth certificate and adivse who his parents were, then I am confidant, (having researched all the Surrey and Sussex Dancy's!), that I will be able to link him in with the rest of the family, and advise you which of us Dancy researchers are closest to him.

Hope that helps,

Penny

(pennyakers@msn.com)

No, I am not related to them. My mother-in-law is the one with the Dancy connection. She is connected to the Wingler line through her grandmother on her mother's side of the family. Yes, David is the one who wrote the book on the Stiddham's.
