Thank you Paul! I will check out the "dit names".

I'm looking for Stephen Walker, b. ? in PA, d. 1866, father of Stephen Eugene Walker, b. 4/8/1874 in Bradford, PA, d. 5/28/1918 in Knox County, IL.

1880 census shows Stephen Walker's father was born in France and I was told as a child our name (Walker) was anglicized from what I thought was "De Marcheterre". After a little research, it must have been "dit Marcheterre".

If anyone has more suggestions, I would really appreciate it. My dad (d. 1979) also told me the name change was recorded in PA, but I don't know where.
