I'm sure there is a connection between our Danes. Melvina was married to John Henderson RIGGS in 1874 in Crawford County, MO. She was the orphaned daughter of James Stephens and his wife, maiden name unknown. James was married and then presumably lost his first wife. He remarried and had James S. and Melvina. They both died and the two little children were left, so the grandmother I am looking for took them in and raised them. At least she raised Melvina. I have located relatives of James S. and they knew very little more than I did about who raised the two orphaned children. We do know that James Stephens and his second wife are the parents.
