Hey Kyle, in your researching the Dane family, ever come across anything on the paternity of the first wife of Dr. John Dane (1612-1684), Eleanor (Clark) Dane? She is, after all, my ancestress and I was just wondering if you did. Been finding out a lot about her son John Dane, III, who was one of the twelve jurors during that dark time in Massachusetts history, the infamous Salem witchcraft trials of 1692. Also been finding out a lot about her grandson, my ancestor Nathaniel Dane (1691-1760). Apparently his third wife (and widow), Esther (Kimball) Dane, died in 1770. Anything you can tell me can be sent to my email address on AOL, creanaugusta@aol.com; thanks.

Walter T.

Hi there, I have posted a series of family photos at Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kyleshistory/sets/7215762408406...

These are mostly of my grandfather, Francis S Dane II, my great grandfather Francis S Dane I and our close relatives. There are a couple of photos that need some identification, which you folks might help with, like this one:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kyleshistory/4671268365/in/set-...

I'm particularly curious to know if anyone is familiar with the Harry Dane photograph:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kyleshistory/4671268433/in/set-...
He's not a close relative of mine, but he's someone one of my ancestors came across over the years and kept in touch with. I'm not sure what his history is.

I also have more information on the Danes in these pictures and some others at my blog:
http://danegenealogy.blogspot.com/

DANE Nathan b. December 29, 1752 in Ipswich, Massachusetts

GENEALOGICAL and PERSONAL MEMOIRS
Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts
Prepared under the editorial supervision of William Richard CUTTER, A. M.
Historian of the New England Historic Genealogical Society; Librarian of Woburn Public Library; Authur of “The Cutter Family,” “History of Arlington,” “Bibliography of Woburn,” etc., etc.
Volume I.; Illustrated
New York; Lewis Historical Publishing Company; 1908
Page 27

NATHAN DANE
Nathan Dane was born at Ipswich, in the parish of that town called the Hamlet, now the separate town of Hamilton, December 29, 1752. His ancestor John Dane came from England before 1641 and from him Nathan was descended by John (2), John (3), Daniel (4), Daniel (5), the last whom married Abigail Burnham, the mother of Nathan.
He worked on a farm until he was twenty-one, when he prepared himself for college, and entered Harvard, and was graduated there in 1778. He then taught school and studied law, and began practice in Beverly, where he resided until his death, February 15, 1835. He was a representative to the general court of Massachusetts, 1782-85; member of Congress, 1785-87; and of the Massachusetts senate five years between 1790 and 1798. He held other honors, including an appointment as justice of the court of common pleas, but resigned the place very soon. In 1814 he was a member of the Hartford convention. He was a member of several historical societies. In 1829 he founded the Dane law professorship in Harvard College. He was the author of "A General Abridgment and Digest of American Law," a work which gave him a permanent fame. But he is still better known for the connection of his name with the Ordinance of 1787, drafted by him for the government of the Northwest Territory of Ohio. In this document the spread and power of the institution of slavery was checked.
Daniel Webster in his famous "Reply to Hayne" eulogized him thus: "I paid a passing tribute of respect to a very worthy man, Mr. Dane, of Massachusetts. It so happens that he drew the ordinance of 1787 for the government of the northwest territory. A man of so much ability and so little pretense, of so great a capacity to do good and so unmixed a disposition to do it for its own sake, a gentleman who had acted an important part forty years ago, in a measure the influence of which is still deeply felt, should be remembered." Webster further said: "It fixed forever the character of the population in the vast regions northwest of the Ohio, by excluding from them involuntary servitude. It impressed upon the soil itself, while it was yet a wilderness, an incapacity to bear up any other than freeman. It laid the interdict against personal servitude, in original compact, not only deeper than all local law, but deeper, also, than all local constitution."
He was notable above all his professional brethren of that time. He acquired in his youth a physical stamina by work on the farm which supported him through the unremitted labors of a long life, during sixty of which he pursued his studies.
A notice by a contemporary, Rev. Christopher T. Ayer, is printed in Stone's "History of Beverly," from which are made these extracts: "His father was a worthy and substantial farmer, and his parents respectable and excellent persons, of whom he always spoke with veneration and affection. They had a numerous family - six sons and six daughters - of whom two daughters were livng (1843) one in her 102d year. He was remarkable for his power of long continued application to study. His advantages of education before he was twenty-one were very small. He prepared himself for college in the short space of eight months. He studied law under the well known Judge Wetmore.* His Practice from the first was extensive and profitable. Through growing deafness he was induced gradually, and at length wholly to retired from it. He was appointed on a committee to revise the laws of the State in 1795, and again to a similar duty in 1811 and 1812. He was an elector of president of the United States in 1812, and chosen in 1820 a member of the convention for revising the State constitution, but on account of deafness did not take his seat. He was distinguished by his ability in debate, knowledge of public business and capacity for discharging it." "We are accustomed," said Mr. Webster (in 1830), "to praise the lawgivers of antiquity; we help to perpetuate the fame of Solon and Lycurgus; but I doubt whether one single law of any lawgiver, ancient or modern, has produced effects of a more distinct and marked and lasting character than the ordinance of '87. That instrument was drawn by Nathan Dane, then and now a citizen of Massachusetts. It was adopted, as I think I have understood, without the slightest alteration; and certainly it has happened to few men, to be the author of a political measure of more large and enduring consequence."
He bestowed in his lifetime the sum of $15,000 to the Law College of Harvard University. He was also a donor to the Dane Law Library of Ohio. His "General Abridgement and Digest of American Law, with Occasional Notes and Comments," is in nine volumes. It was published in 1823 and 1829, and is regarded a monument of immense industry and learning. He completed another of nearly equal extent in manuscript, entitled, "A Moral and Political Survey of America." He could study and write at least twelve hours a day, and neither, as he said himself, the care children, nor the cares or want of property have interfered with his studies. At the time when he commenced this and his law works (in 1782) there were only fragments in the country on either subject. His writings are marked with a neglect of style, his object, when composing, being to pursue the thought before him, and simply to make his views intelligible to others. He had no graces of style, either native or borrowed; neither did he seek for such. To instruct and convince was his aim.
He was rigidly simple in his habits and manners, and in all that he did. His eloquence was that of fact and argument. His life throughout was one of constant and wonderful diligence. He was never before his last illness confined to his house by sickness more than two days at a time, and that very rarely. He took regular rather than a great deal of exercise, and that was walking chiefly. The qualities of his intellect were altogether of the solid kind. He had little acquaintance with the lighter branches of literature. His judgment was singularly discriminating and well balanced. Few ever lived who were less biased by passion or prejudice. In the management of public affairs he was cautious, firm, sagacious and able, and he was correspondingly skilful in conducting his private business. Although he was long in the practice of loaning money to many different individuals, he never incurred pecuniary loss in this way. He was remarkably free from the indulgence of resentful or vindictive feelings. To the excellent partner of his life he was united for fifty-five years, and she survived him. Without children of his own, he was as a father to many. He assisted several of his relatives to a liberal education, and others he aided to establish in life. If a prudent economy reigned in his family, so did also a ready hospitality. Few laymen have spent so much time in the study of theology. Rarely has there been one that had proposed to himself so much, who lived to see his objects so fully accomplished.
His widow died April 14, 1840, aged ninety years.
ANCESTRY - John Dane (I), of Berkhamsted, Bishop's Stortford, Herts, England, and of Ipswich and Roxbury, Massachusetts, died at Roxbury, September 14, 1658, married first, _____; married second, July 2, 1643, Agnes Chandler, widow of William Chandler, of Roxbury; she married third, August 9, 1660, John Parminter, of Sudbury, Massachusetts.
Meaning of Dane surname, Dan surname

Dear Sir or Madam, My name is Allan Dane. I am half Bohemian and half Slovenian. I am Slovenian on my Father's side. As I have been researching my Father's side of the family. I have found both my Father and Grandfather on Jewish Family History collection. Whe my Grandfather came through Ellis island his name was Bastjan Dane. In the World War 2 draft his name is Bastjan Dan. My father is born as Bastian Dane Jr. But when he marries my mother his name is Bastian Dan Jr. My Aunt has 2 birth certificates one as Doniella Dane and the other as Doniella Dan. I have been doing some research, and found that Slovenian's are descended from the Dinaric race. And the Dinaric race is believed to be descended from the Hebrew Tribe of Dan. Will someone pease help? And Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi Everyone

I have just been reading this thread as I have recently been reseaching the descendants of George DANE and Barbara ELLIOTT.

Their son James DANE married Letesi, but I am unsure of he maiden name. The marriage record (1887) looks like Leattisia AMMIER though it is very hard to read. I have her on the 1881 census as Letesia AMOR. However, I can not find her or her family on other censuses or marriage records, etc. She was apparently born in Wroxeter (near Gorrie) 16 Nov 1867.

Does anyone have any information on Letesia?

Vern

I am looking for info on Daniel & Rosanah Dane. Daniel was born in 1823. Rosanah was born in 1824 in Ireland. In the 1860 Census they were in Middlesex, MA. They had 3 children. But that is where it ends, in the next census all 3 children are living with a Thomas & Eliza Cool. My great grandfather is one of their children; William C Dane. He has also gone by Charles Dane. any info would be GREAT!!!
Thanks,
Michelle

Dane connection to Hannibal Hamlin, Lincoln's 1st VP---Amos Nourse infromation

I found, at one time, a family tree that connect Hannibal Hamlin to Abigail Dane and Francis Fulkner. I bookmarked the link but it got lost when my compter crashed. Does any one know how they is related?

I also read a quote of his stating that he was related to Abigail and Francis. They were his ancestors and there was something about the witch trials. Of course, I didn't make a hard copy so it too was lost in the crash.

Anyway, today I discover something that not many people may know. If I can figure out the Faulkner/Dane connection to Hamlin then I can prove Hannibal is a cousin to Amos Nourse. Amos is GG grandchild of Abigail and Francis. Amos is also the man who took over Hamlin's Senate seat when he resigned from it.

Small world isn't it...

Amos's line goes like this: Abigail Dane m. Frncis Faulkner; Dorothy Faulkner m. Samuel Nurse II; Samuel Nurse III m. Elizabeth Kellogg; Jonathan Nourse m. Ruth Barrett; Amos Nourse m. Lucy M. ???.

There's a small biography on Nourse on "The Biographical Directory of the Unites States Congress" which helped me find most of the most of the census records and other information about him on Ancestry. There is a bio on Hamlin, too.

My pages here on Ancestry are called The Schram Family Tree.
You should be able to find Amos' page by searching for him and then looking for my tree.

Wit. Wm. DEAN, Wm. GEOTEE, Andrew GOOTEE.

___
WATCH OUT! Here comes speculation. It looks as if the James DEEN who had died by 1744 in Somerset Co., listing an unborn child and a brother Charles could have been a brother of Charles DEAN whose will was pr. 1764, naming a son James DEAN and also several others named DEAN.

I wonder if Elizabeth SPENCER, will pr. 1750, naming sons Mathew & Wm. DEAN, might have been the widow of Michael DEAN, will pr. 1721, since a witness to Michael's will was Wm. SPENCER. The son Wm. DEAN & grandson Wm. DEAN might have been the ones whose wills were pr. 1764 & 1774.
___
There are a few references to James DEAN in the online files of the MD Archives:

26 Apr. & 16 May 1799, James & wf. Mary DEAN to James SMITH, pt/o "Townsends Situation" [SO now WI, L:449-450].

1803, #155. Abraham TAYLOR & Isaac KENNEY vs. James DEAN, SO, Deans Outlet to Jones Lot. Plat also shows Kenneyington. 1:28:02:046.

Chancery #1350, 24 July 1819. Gilbert, Eliza, Joseph, & Walter DAVIS, George & Catherine GEBHART, Sarah RADCLIFFE & James DEAN vs. George & Denton DAVIS, Grace, Catherine, & Noll CANNON, James, Mary, Joseph, Eliz., Wm., Joshua, Thomas, & Upton RADCLIFFE, Barney, Catherine, Thomas, & Joshua DEAN, & Alexander & Sarah HARVEY. Estate of Joseph RADCLIFFE, Rights of Man. Accession 17,898-1350 MSA S512-2-1406.

#11385,2 Dec. 1841. Wm. W. TWILLEY vs. Whittington, James, Wm., Mary, Cassandra, Wm., Thomas, & Sophia DEAN, Edward & Susan WILLING, Leonard & Eliza BOOZE, Ephraim & Eliz. MARVEL, James D., Wm. D., John D., Leah D., Levin, Slater, Julia A., Mary, Sally, Louisa, & Thomas TWILLEY, DO, estate of Charles DEAN, "Gootees Neck." Accession #17,898-11385, MSA S512-14-11210.

Do any of the names appear with James DEAN of Kentucky?

E-mail me direct jimbodane@yahoo.com and I can get you all kinds of info on William P. Dane. He was a Civil War soldier for the Union out of Kentucky. He had several other brothers who fought also like, Pimkney, Milton G. and Washington S. Dane. 2 or 3 cousins also fought with them and lived close by like Littleton Dane and Leo/George Dane and James Dane. Mostly they were farmers and Baptists. They were hard workin' and fought for there country, not well known but part of the backbone that built this country.
Jim

Dear Shirley: Glad you wrote. Samuel and Mary are my husband's 3rd great grandparents. You may email me and then I send you access to the personal tree. I think I only have pics of the graves there, maybe on both trees but I can send other info. I am thrilled with the names of Portadown, Tanderagee is this village and parish? I only knew Armagh as a certainty. Have you been in touch with Reverend Jeff in Gorrie he has researched the genealogies of many families of the area. We met him last year and visited the graves. my email is
cherielynn25@aol.com
best regards, Cherie Lynn

I noticed your family connection to Samuel Greer of Gorrie Township, Huron North, Ontario and Hannah Dane.

My family descends from Samual Greer Sr. and Mary Martin born Portadown, Tanderagee, County Armagh Ireland. Their oldest daughter Ellen was my 2Xgreat-grandmother. I have a note from my great aunt with the names of both Samuel and Hannah on it. Along with the other brothers and sisters.

They settled near Prescott, Ontario when they came over from Ireland. At some point the three brothers, George, Samuel and John moved up into Huron County near Gorrie. My 2xgreat-grandmother Ellen and her husband William Montgomery followe. Then went down into the Dakota Territory and then back into Huron County and settled near Bayfield.

Just wondering if you had any more meat to put on these bones? That would be birth and marriage dates perhaps.

Dane family of Vermont

Trying to locate anyone with information about the Nathaniel and Helen Dane family of Vermont. Nathaniel born June 20, 1889 at Troy, Vermont. Married about 1912 to Helen May Bedell who was born October 1894 in Washington State. Helen was the daughter of Nelson G. Bedell and Eva May Allen. Eva May often went by Evelyn or Martha. Nathaniel and Helen had four known children. Walter born about 1915, Ralph N. born February 8, 1916, Barbara born about 1917 and William B. born about 1924. Family is located in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts in the 1920 census. In the 1930 census Nathaniel and three children, Walter, Ralph and Barbara are still located in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. Helen and son William are in the Concord, Essex County, Vermont. Both Nathaniel and Helen list marital status as married. William Dane enlisted for World War II in Grafton County, New Hampshire on February 3, 1943. No additional information has been located on him. Ralph N. Dane served in the U. S. Army as Lt. Colonel. He served from 15 Sep 1941 to 30 Sep 1961. He served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. His wife's name was Louise A. (maiden name unknown). Ralph died on August 1, 1987 in Santa Clara County, California. Last residence, Palo Alto, California. He is buried at San Francisco National Cemetery. Additional information for Walter and Barbara has not been located.

Nathaniel had a brother George who resided with him in the 1920 census. I believe Nathaniel and George were sons of William and Georgiana Dane. However the parents names are hard to read on the 1910 St. Johnsbury, Caledonia County, Vermont census.

Seeking information about the marriage and family of Elizabeth Dane, daughter of John Dane Jr. and [Eleanor Clark?].

We have many unanswered questions about this family, including:
1. In addition to our ancestor, John Foster, who were the other children?
2. Is there a more definite marriage date for Elizabeth Dane and Reginald Foster?
3. What are Elizabeth Dane's birth/death dates?
4.
