I wanted to update the thread with the information that Vincent Dangelewicz was from Suwalki (whether the town or region named Suwalki, I'm not sure of yet). Vincent's wife's name was Anna Delewska (or Dylewska).

I was transcribing the Charles R. Hale Collection, vol. 38, Norwich, Conn. headstone inscriptions and came across this listing in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery: Danilowicz, Juliza, born 1897, died 1900.
I am not related and have no other info to share on this name. Good luck hunting!

My grandmother Mary Danilowicz was from Ohio! She is the daughter of Mary Margaret Celoski and Frank Danilowicz.
And She (my grandmother) has a brother Frank who we believe changed his last name to Daniels and then a Lou who spells his last name Danielowicz?

I am doing some research for a lady and her mother's maiden name was a DANIELS.
I just discovered that her grandparents were from Lithuania and because of the name change when they came to the states, have had a difficult time locating data.

If anyone finds a connection to this line, please feel free to contact me.

Rafall DANIELEWICZ was born circa 1860 in Lithuania and came to the states with Francheska, Anna and Ivan.
Arrived in New York on 04, June 1895
port of departure was Bremen, race was, Russian, ship was the WEIMAR.. This was all according to the ships manifest.
THey settled in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Just a point of interest regarding the Polish language and surnames. There are several Polish naming conventions related to the suffix meaning "son of." Knowing them can some times be helpful in expanding your research leading to family connection. More on this subject can be seen at:

In my case, I'm interested in knowing more about the "soon of" Daniels known as Ludwik Danielewski (aka. Daniels) who was the first Pole to settle in Bay City, MI in 1870. He appears to have had brother or cousin who lived in Arkansas and Ohio before following him to Bay City. Ludwig was from the Russian/Poland area. His father, Constantine, is said to have been from a nobile class and was exciled from Poland after the rebellion of 1863. Additional history on him may be seen at:

Its been quite a few years since you post, but I am the great gradaughter of Anna Tulpiska, whose mother was Mary Danielowicz. I have some info that may be helpfull, including a birth certificate of Mary, and her daughter Anna, and most if not all of the family sill lives on LI!

Hi:
I am looking for information about the Danielewicz family from Kresy. My great-great-grandfather, Aleksander Danielewicz, was born in 1851 somewhere in Kresy and in 1854 he ended up in an orphanage in Warsaw - that's all we know about him.

My great-great-grandpa, Aleksander Danielewicz, was born in about 1850 somewhere in "Kresy Wschodnie" and then he ended up in the Boduen orphanage in Warsaw. I think there was also a mix up between two different ways of spelling his last name: Danilewicz or Danielewicz. My family is Danielewicz. We don't know anything else about his ancestors. Can anybody help?

Hi,

I was going through the site (ancestry.com) and found Your, well quite old but anyway, question.

There are a few Danielewicz families. Also it can be written Danilewicz, becouse of misstates in books. For example, my grandfather was born as Danilewicz and died as Danielewicz.

Most of Danielewicz are not from the same family. There are some to divide by "herb" and then if You recognize one of them, then its easier to look. They are: Sas, Leliwa, Ostoja, Godziemba, Rola and also some more that I just dont remember now. Also we ave Danielewicz in Kiev Russia and in old Preussen. Basicly, most of Danielewicz's are from (the origin) Lithaenia, Belarus or Western Ukraina (Volyn, "red russia) and the common name for the area is Kresy.

I am a descendant of Daniel Chmiel from Poland. Some of the people used the name "danielewicz" which means son of Daniel. However, Chmiel is a Roman Catholic Name. In the area of Poland where this branch of my ancestors came from....we have the ONLY Daniel, which leads me to believe he was from someplace else. I feel this mystery will never be solved.

Chester real name was Czeslaw Danielewicz. He came to Ellis Island on the ship named the SS Pretoria. I have a copy of the ship records into the United States. Chester is my husbands great uncle. He was approx 6 wen he came t the US. He lived in Chicago until he married and moved to thorp WI. He was born in Kalisz, Russia. I have been researching my husbands family for a few months now. They are Danielewicz's. I have the ship records from the passage from poland and Russia to the US back in 1913. I know 3 trips were made to the US. From our side of the family, most of the relatives live in IL and Wisc. I think all the Danielewicz's are related it is just a question of where in the family tree. I would love to get any information you may have to see if there is any relation to us.

I would just like to say that there are tons of Danielewicz's in the northeast that are Catholic and several families are not related by any means. In fact, the name is quite common in many European countries. So to say that they all go back to to the same family is impossible.

As far as I know, the family was Jewish but I am not cetain of their origins since they were the only family with that name in the area they originate from. They are connected to a family named Chmiel-very Polish. Perhaps your husband can fill in the blanks.

Danielewicz began in my tree with Daniel Chmiel who married Menucha. They lived in Lomza which is in Northeast Poland. The publication, "Landsmen" is something maybe I should receive again. There is a woman in WAshington, DC named Marlene Silverman who publishes it. I'll look into it. Chmiel married Kafka which is my last name. I heard too about conversion. However, Daniel is not common in the Jewish community and I wonder how far back they go. We were the only Danielewicz in that area. My g-grandfather was Jacob Kafka whose father was Daniel Joseph Kafka. The name Daniel is very significant in the family. "Landsmen" would have information on the Danielewicz family. This is not an easy trace. I am a Danielewicz, which means son of Daniel. The Danielewiczs I know of are of the Jewish religion, though they were the ONLY Jewish family in the area of Lomza, Poland to have that name. It was very uncommon. The family is related to the Kafka family, the Wstega (vish-tenga) Family and the Chmiel (Ham-iel) Family. The family tree, if you and I are related, is partially in the hands of Mr. Morris Spektor (Spector?) in Hamden, CT. I believe he is listed in directory inquiries. Also, as I told Emily, there is a newsletter that I used to get. I think it is called, "Landsmen" or, "Landsman" and your bigger libraries would be able to find out how you could get an issue. If is for people whose ancestry comes from the Lomza/Bialstock area and who were Jewish.
The Danielewicz family could easily have been Catholic in origin, I just don't know.
The major occupations of this entire family line were in breweries and inns. I'd like to know more, myself.

Hello, Emily. I know a bit about this family as I am a descendant. They are from Lomza, Poland, I believe, and the surrounding area. The name means, "son of Daniel". The family is related to the Chmiel
family. (pronounced ham-iel). Actually, you can find out about the family through a newsletter put out by a woman named Marlene Silverman in Washington, DC. I can't recall the name, but the local Family Research Center (Jesus Christ Church of Latter Day Saints) would know. It's for people descended from that area who are Jewish. My background from there is mixed with Catholic. Danielewicz is related to the Kafka Family, The Wstega (vish-tenga) Family.
In fact, the gentleman, Morris Spektor, from Hamden, CT has the printout of the family tree. I believe he is listed in Directory Inquiries. Tell him you are looking for information on the Danielewicz family and he should be able to send you the printout.
