Nancy,
My only known DAN/N connection in Pound Ridge is James DAN, b 1760, died (3 years too early for the 1850 census!) in 1847. I have no idea who his family is, except a daughter, Sarah, b c1800, who married Ira JUMP from that area in 1818. They moved to Ohio in the 1830's. I have never found a family connection for "my" James DAN. I have his pension application, but it's no help.

I'm interested in this because my DANN family also came from Pound Ridge. I looked in the 1880 census, and see some items [you may already have them]:

Fred DANN, age 18, laborer, living with Henry & Mary KEELER; second door from Charlotte (BOUTON) WEBSTER and her family, including her sister and father John BOUTON. This is on page 404, Lewisboro, Westchester, NY. On the previous page is Charles DANN and daughter Hestella. there are BOUTONS, WEBSTERS and KEELERS all over the place in Lewisboro.

A possible [Edwin] William DANN, right age:
Census Place:	Lysander, Onondaga, New York
Source:	FHL Film 1254905 National Archives Film T9-0905 Page 351D
Relation	Sex	Marr	Race	Age	Birthplace
William DANN	Self	M	M	W	23	NY	Occ:	Farmer	Fa: CT	Mo: NY
Elsie DANN	Wife	F	M	W	25	NY	Occ:	Keeping House	Fa: NY	Mo: NY
Erwin DANN	Son	M	S	W	6M	NY Fa: NY	Mo: NY
Laura CHASE	MotherL	F	W	W	56	NY Fa: VT	Mo: VT
Anna CHASE	SisterL	F	S	W	17	NY	Occ:	At School	Fa: NY	Mo: NY
Eliakim PIERCE	Other	M W	74	NY	Occ:	Farmer	Fa: NY	Mo: NY

And then, there's a Charles DANN, b 1851, blacksmith, living with Leonard FREOS, wagon maker, in Pawling, Dutchess, New York	Source:	FHL Film 1254824 National Archives Film T9-0824 Page 319D

I hope this helps. I have the 1880 census index, if you need more lookups. There are DANNS in Pound Ridge still in 1880 . . .
Mike RANSOM

Charles DANN - (1822 - 1898 )

Have my Grandfather Frederick Lincoln Dann's family - census records 1850 -1880 for father Charles 1822-1898 and mother Sally Ann Bouton 1826-1872. Can't find his brothers, Edwin W. b.Pound Ridge Apr.14, 1856 after 1860. Did he die?
Brother Charles Odle also shows up in IGI/NA. But have looked for months and can't find him after he worked for Clark Mead when he was 17. Have picture of Jennie and Miles Dann in 1949 and also one of an older man in 1934 making reference to a picture near him of Miles. A Miles b.1885 in CT is in the SSDI d.12-11-1973 in CA. Found a Miles 54 in North Castle NY in 1870 census. He doesn't seem to fit. Would really appreciate any help with all this. Does anyone know what happened to Fred after his mother died when he was nine? He was very secretive about his past and did not stay in touch with his birth family. Many thanx for whatever.

Hi Mike - You wrote one of the first replies I got years ago. - the Pound Ridge factor. After a lengthy absence am back to this frustration. There is some very wrong info in trees about my grandfather's birth family. Do people just make up names and places? Charles Dan, wife Sarah (Sally)
and kids are so easy from 1850 on in the census. They are mine 'cause the few pictures I have with names i.e.Mary, Estelle,Emma etc. seem t.b. corroboration enuf. Tracing these further - even back of wife Sally has worked. My wall is the Charles (no middle initial ever)Dan, always b.p. NY.
If an immigrant, would b.p. NY be better than elsewhere?
A shoemaker from England looks like a fit - sort of. Did any of your family go to the coast?- Naugatuck,Bridgeport from P.R.? Could that area be where grandparents lived?
This is prob. too long to go anywhere but guess you know how hopeless I feel. Thanx for listening - nancy
Hi I had almost forgotten this posting that I had done good to get a reply, all that I have traced so far, are on my dad, his father was Frank Arthur DANN 1859-1923ish, St Leonards in Sussex, he married 1st Phyllis Rogers, 2nd my gran, Emily WOOD. Franks parents were John DANN and Arabella FULLER(her father was also a John) I gather they were all within easy reach of Hastings St Leonards, John Fuller I know was b about 1801 but no info yet on John Dann or his wife, very fascinating subject ,cant place where East Dean is, but sounds like the Sussex Downs, I have been in New Zealand for about 30 yrs, so not sure of other areas now, Regards Beryl in NZ

I am searching too! My family are from East Dean, East Sussex. I am back to Alfred Dann (1857 - 1933). Married to Dorcas, had William and Rosetta. William married Alice and had Cecil (1920 - 1976)-my grandfather. He married Rose Betteridge and had John and Jean. John married Ann Doidge and had me!! That's about as far as I've got at the moment. Happy searching, Sarah.

I think
his father was John Dann, married Arabella Fuller, by the 1881 cencus, she had remarried, so John must have died in the 1870's
this was around Hastings and Bexhill and St. Leonards in Sussex, I just hope this messsage board is for the UK!!!!!!
Regards to all Beryl

I mispelled : Anna Dann-Marham should be Anna Dann-Markham who lived in Canton, Ohio.

Dann orgins for this branch started in approx.1862 WHEN Anthony Dann, 1828-1878, came to the U.S.A. from Bethleham, near Boden Boden (am told spelling is correct), Germany. His wife was Catherinw Adelman-Dann, 1832-1894. My sister tells me they are buried in the N.E. corner of St. Paul Cemetary in Norwalk, Ohio.
Penny, you might look in Templemore in Tipperary, Ireland. My DANNs migrated to London, Ontario, Canada in 1823/25 and settled there. The craftsmen in the family were among other craftsmen from the Templemore area who were recruited by TALCOTT to settle the area. Only four siblings migrated to Canada. I've long suspected there were more DANNs who stayed or migrated elsewhere, especially since my ggg-grandparents, John DANN (1765-?) and Elizabeth WHITE (1768-1852) died in Tipperary.
I've wanted to explore guild records as Templemore was a center for the guilds and craftsmen (mine were Masons also), which made their skills especially valuable in new settlements.
Surnames of those who married these early DANNs and their children are RAWLINS, HOWARD, WHITE, ELIOTT, GUEST, O'NEIL, and BURNETT. Recurring given names are Joseph, John, George, William, Anne, Jane, Joyce, Robert, Mary, Elizabeth, Edward, Sarah, and Susan. One of the grandchildren was named Alexander.

Hi Penny
Sounds as if there could be a link. My Dann, Alexander was my gr gr grandfather and he came over with his father Alexander and mother Mary in the late 1840's to Hampshire. He eventually had a son Alexander who had a son Alexander. I did find a marriage of Alexander Dann to Mary Mathews in Killaloe in 1814 so wondered if that was his father. My Dann had brothers Richard, Thomas and a sister Rachel. Alexander and father and brothers were all shoemakers. Can you put me in contact with the Alan Dann in England as I have lost contact with all the English Danns except one. I knew them as a child but not now.
Do you have a family tree programme. If you think there is a link I could send you a gedcom so you can look at it. If not I can send you a genealogy report with all the information in.
If you are not sure of your grgrgr grandfathers name it could be that his second name was Alexander and he was a brother of my grgrgr grandfather. I did wonder if the Dann's came over from Scotland to Ireland as I know my grandfathers family were strict protestant and both the names Alexander and Dann are not really Irish. I have found a few in Scotland and I believe that was the path of a lot of people from Scotland.
My proper e-mail address is beryl@clampton.com. You can use that if it is easier.
Where are you. I am in Wiltshire England, but my second homeis Australia.
Welcome to the large group of DANN researchers who want to find some proof of this line.

You might want to review Andy Dann's 2001 trip to Barbados to try and verify the "Barbados connection". He was not able to substantiate the connection. see http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/dann/2001-11/1...

Thanks for posting, and feel free to share any sources you come across.

Hi Beryl, I read your post with much interest because I am also searching for my Dann ancestors in Ireland. The names Alexander, Sarah and Jane keep appearing in my tree so I do wonder if their is a relationship between the families. There were not that may Danns in Ireland in the 19th century. I am trying to find out the christian name of my gr gr gr Grandfather who came to Australia around 1850's and worked as a policeman. He brought his grandchildren here around 1880 after their parents died. I think his name was Alexander but I cant be sure. I do have a copy of the police service records that state his calling as shoemaker and that he was born in Dublin. He Married jane Yates at Westmeath His death certificate states that his father was Edward (a shoemaker) and his mother was Sarah. My gr gr grandfather was Edward (Married to Minnie Tynan) and his children Sarah and Alexander(my gr grandfather). I posted an ad in the Melbourne paper re Danns and received a phone call from an Alan Dann who said his gr grandfather was an Alexander Dann who lived in England , was a shoemaker, and originally came from Ireland.

This sounds like my grandfather's sister. My mother recalls that she had 2 daughters and 1 son. My mother remembers going out to stay with one of the daughters during the war to get away from the bombings. My mother would have been about 9 yrs. old at the time. She recalls that 'May' as she was known, looked after her father during his illness. Do you have any family history regarding my grandfather (Edith's brother Mark E.)

This is absolutely amazing. There is much more to this story. My mother, Gay, was born in 1931 to Mark and Ethel (Mark and Ethel never married). It wasn't until she sent away for a copy of her birth certificate many years later that she found the woman listed under 'mother' as Elsie Kelly and not Ethel. You can imagine the shock. For several years now we have been trying to find out who this Elsie Kelly was and what happened to her. I did find out that she did in fact marry Mark in 1915 and had a daughter, also Elsie, in 1917 but after that the trail runs out. The mystery is, why would her name be listed on my mother's birth certificate.

Also, to set the record straight. It was actually Nell who was indirectly responsible for Mark's spinal condition. She took him out in his pram one day, parked it outside a shop, and it rolled down the hill. His back was broken as a result was quite disfigured although he could in fact walk.

My mother sometimes had to stay with Mark senior and her Aunt Nell as her own mother (Ethel?) often went away. She has very fond memories of Nell and her daughter.

I was born December 1949, the day Mark senior died (so I'm told).

Best Regards,

Christine Cooper (pc_coopers@hotmail.com)

Re: Dann and Dan families of America

Good morning Cousins,
It is good to see others trying to clarify Francis Dan/Dann's origins. I
have tried in vain, for many years, to penetrate this "brick wall", without
success. People have posted about a Barbados connection, however, no one
can give a source for the assertions. It seems that once the reference was
posted, the statements took on the famous "internet credibility". I have
made countless inquiries to posters, seeking verification for their posts
and all have come back as "saw it on the internet or posted at Ancestry and
assumed that it was true". Copy or name collectors have perpetuated this
un-verified and probably erroneous information and probably kept other
researchers from seeking the true information, because researchers thought
that the information was verified or on the right path.

What do we know? Francis Dan appeared in Stamford, Connecticut before
November 19, 1685 when he married Elizabeth Clason. Stamford records make
mention of his purchasing property, his being employed as "pounder" (keeper
of stray livestock). Francis's death is listed as March 19, 1723/24. The
rest is conjecture or a less than careful assembly of circumstantial
information. What do we know about Barbados? The LDS Church has filmed all
of the archived history of Barbados from the earliest records beginning in
the early 1600s. I can state that from personal observation that the
original documents do not contain any information that is not on the LDS
films. The historical library has many books with information on the early
inhabitants of Barbados. With the help of the research librarians, I
reviewed these books for any additional information, clue or source.
Additional information was not to be found. There are only 3 references to
any Dan/Dann records during the 17th century. These are outlined in my post
at:
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/dann/2001-11/1...

I will not state that the Barbados connection is false, but, I have never
been able to find any evidence that it was someone's leap of faith in trying
to flesh-out scant information about our ancestor and probably the first
Dan/Dann to colonial America.

I have several theories about Francis that I would be happy to discuss , if
anyone is interested.

If anyone has additional sources for verifiable information about Francis'
origin, PLEASE come forward. Hopefully this "brickwall" will fall.
Andy Dann

Mark and Clara Dann (she was formerly Jones) lived in Jevington (near Eastbourne) - Mark's father William was a shepherd on the South Downs.
Clara was a ladies maid at 'the big house' in Jevington - Jevington Place - and I assume that the Danns also worked for the estate.

Mark and Clara's first child was Alice Eleanor (known to all as Nell) who was born on 12th November 1877. My grandmother was Edith May - born 29th July 1881. Mark Ecklee (known to all as Jim) was born in Eastbourne on 3rd November 1887.

Mark/ Jim was not a fit man and suffered from a spinal condition so that he needed to be wheeled about in a special chair. My grandmother described him as 'bright' but deeply resented having to look after him!

Mark & Clara later took over the running of the Black Horse pub at 222 Seaside in Eastbourne. Mark (junior) must have assisted as he later married a barmaid - Elsie A. Kelly - in 1915. I gather from my mother and aunt, that they had a child called Gay who emigrated to Canada after the war. Are you her offspring?

Send me your e-mail address and I'll forward you a picture of my grandmother. You're right to say that after Mark Dann (senior) became too old to look after the pub, the brewery rented him a house around the corner. Firstly Nell looked after him but following her death, my grandmother moved (4 Willowfield Square) in. He died aged 95 in 1949. My grandmother died at Lewes in February 1961.

Best wishes,

John Hendy

I can help a little with Ursula Randall. Her maiden name is Coon and her brother George is my great great grandfather. According to a posting on RootsWeb WorldConnect she was born on 18 May 1829 at Perry, Genesee, NY. I have been looking unsuccessfully for her death date. She was still living in 1900 when she appears (under the surname Randell) with her son George in Big Prairie Township, Newaygo County, MI.

Have you found a marriage date for Charles and Ursula? Was Ursula the mother of any of his children or were they all by his first wife?
