I'm beginning to trace my Mother's family of Dano's. I have heard the spelling could have been changed from a French spelling. I know they came from France through Canada. But because of the possible name change, it's been difficult to trace. Mom found a connection in France to Josephine(Annie) Vermette. She married Jerome Dano. He was born in 1810 in Canada.

walter denaut ran the flour mill which has been restored you can see it on line oldstone mill in Rideau, also his house is a bed and breakfast also online, I found no connection so far with walter, walters dad was Joachim who faught in the Rev war and war of 1812 as volunteer milita captain in Grenville/Leeds.

I'm guessing Joseph was Joachim brother, Joachim was from La Praire, where lots of Denaut/Deneau/Denodenualt, denough, etc were from no one could write there name so census takers just asked them and the spelled it Phonetically. so all those are pronouced the same in French.

I have someone from the Grenville/Leeds geneological soceity looking into the connection of Joseph and Joachim to see if they are brothers.

I don't know about living in Chicago Heights but I am the great grand daughter of a Joe Dano who lived in Atlanta, IL. He married Elizabeth. I can't remember her maiden name. They had 3 children, 2 daughters and 1 son. The son died at childbirth (one of twins). Could you tell me more about his lineage? You say he was born in over seas?? I was told that his mother died during childbirth and his father was shot before he was born. Does this sound accurate?

Check all spellings of the name you are looking for ex.: Dana/ Dena/Deno/Deny/Denny/Deni/Denis/Dennis/Dani. My family were from french, Canada and the name has been found on census recoreds, baptismals, court doc.'s, birth and death certificates spelled many diferent ways. The "s" on the end is most of the time silent in french.

Scott, I know your line. The Grindstone Island Shaws, desc. Of Ambrose. My wife is Descendant of brother Frank.
Royal Dano the actor is NOT related. I have checked and he appears to be of completely different ancestry. Also would like to know if Madelyn Hunter and Bruce Brooks are still with us. Cannot contact them.
Joe Shaw

I don't have much help, but when I saw the name Leyare, I remembered an Anna Leyere in my Dano tree. Also the name Zita rang a bell because it's so unusaal. Ann was born abt 1891, died 12 April, 1924. She ws married to Harold Lee Dano, They had six children that I know of and one Daughter was named Zita.

Scott, Royal Dano was an actor of some note. He was born in NYC. If you google his name you will find him in Wikipedia along with some history and filmography. This Royal Dano does not appear to be related. Perhaps from Sweden according to the earlier post. I research mainly Shaw and for my wife's side - Dano.

Royal Dano was born in Thousand Island Park. I spoke with him in late 1980's. How far back have you gotten the dano line?..it all ends with Joseph Dano (Denaut, Deneau) of Leeds and Lansdowne. Bruce and Madelyn are still around.

Scott

Hi there:

Do you know who your Harold Dano married after your Grandmother died? My mother's aunt Naomi Cline married a Harold Dano and she says she remembers that he had children from a previous marriage, but she can't remember any of their names. They lived in the Binghamton area, had none of their own children, and eventually divorced, but I don't know how long they were actually married. If it sounds like a match, I'd be happy to share more information.

Thanks!
Michelle

I don't know my Grandfather's name, may have been the Stillman you mention. My Dad died in 1979, not sure of his date of birth, but he was in his mid sixties when he died. My father was from the Welsley Island area, around the border of Ontario and New York, a place called Grindstone Island.

The only info I personally have is what I've heard from my mother who was told by her mother. I'm sure my grandmother has some sort of info because she had the names and the year they were married. When I see my grandmother next I will ask her where she got her information. I apologize in advance If I don't get back with you as quickly as I would like to. I will get back with you as soon as I can.

Thanks, Monica

Hi Scott,

Sorry it took so long for me to reply. I'm a flight attendant and have been very busy. I figured we had the same ggg grandparents. I started researching this last October when my mother told me she found out some info from her mother, about Julia Haskins and joseph Denaut that's when I started messing around on the computer. I'm really new at this sort of thing and don't know exactly what I'm doing but find it very fasinating. I'm pretty sure joesph had a brother named walter and I believe their fathers name was joachim who had a brother or an uncle that was the tenth bishup of quebec. the reason for my belief is I ran across an old article from a news paper that had walter recalling his childhood and made mention of 10th bishup being some kind of relation. When I get time I will try and find this artical again. I also came across info on how Joesph died in a canoing accident on the st. lawrence river. If you have any knowledge of this info please let me know when you get the chance.

Much Thanks, Monica

Dano's in New York

Hi I am looking for information on the Dano Family, Monroe Co., NY. My 2nd Great Grandmother was Margaret / Margrada N. Dano, daughter of Michael & Barbra Dano. I found them on the 1860 census (spelled Danough), the 1870 census in (spelled Dena) 1880 census (spelled Dennu). I followed this family from Gates, to Greece and then to Rochester, all in Monroe Co., NY. Most common spelling I have found is Dano all the way to 1930.
