Lao Dao, a Chinese laborer, CA

The Saturday Bee
Sacramento, Cal
July 22, 1905

BODY CARRIED THIRTY FEET
Red Bluff Local Strikes A Deaf Chinaman And Kills Him Instantly, Fracturing
His Skull
RED BLUFF (Tehama Co.), July 22 - Lao Dao, a Chinese laborer, was instantly
killed at 8:30 p.m. yesterday on the railroad crossing at Walnut Street by
the backing up of the coaches of the local passenger train which had arrived
only a few minutes before.
The unfortunate man arrived yesterday noon from Ashland, Ore., where he
was engaged in mining, to work in cutting fruit in the orchards near Tehama,
which are leased to his countrymen. Early last evening he took his luggage
from the baggage room so as to be ready to take the morning train to-day.
Dao, who was very deaf, started to cross the tracks as the yard men
commenced to switch the train from the main line to the storage track.
Spectators of the tragedy shouted to the Chinaman to get out of the way of
the moving cars, but apparently he did not hear their well-meant warnings,
and was struck on the head, his skull being fractured. His body was carried
about thirty feet before the train could be stopped.
The local tone of the Chinese secret society will take charge of the body
and arrange for burial.
