A deceased Queensland Australian war veteran needs your help.

I have been working to acquire a free bronze memorial plaque from the American Veterans Administration for Mr. John Patrick D’Arcy, a Queensland Australian American Civil War veteran, whose gravesite remains unmarked; but after 10 years the American Veterans Administration in the United States have "changed" the rules. They will no longer accept a request from a cemetery, but 'now' demand acknowledgement from a descendant to act on their behalf.

John Patrick D’Arcy, whose parents were Edward and Catherine (Kate) Dunne, was born in 1839 in Edenderry, Kings County, Ireland. John Darcey was baptized in the Edenderry Catholic Church in 1839. Five of John’s older and younger siblings include Robert born in 1837; Eliza born in 1841; Edward born in 1846; Laurence born in 1849; and Louisa born in 1854. He participatedin the American Civil War and later migrated to Australia where he made his home.

John Patrick D’Arcy complained to his wife about not feeling well, on a Thursday night, February 6, 1913, and around midnight his wife helped him into a large easy chair where he collapsed and suddenly died; at 74 years of age; in Winton, Queensland. John Patrick D’Arcy was buried on February 7, 1913 in the Winton Town Cemetery, Old Section, Plot 480 without a headstone. Mary Kate Darcy, after John’s death, applied for a ‘Widow’s Pension’ on October 14, 1913; also from Winton, Queensland, Australia.

If anyone knows of ”any” descendant of Mr. John Patrick D’Arcy they are asked to please contact James Gray immediately; at jamesmgray@bigpond.com, phone 07 3801 3400 or by post at 11 Corndale Street, Loganholme, Qld., Au., 4129.

If you can find one of his descendants, we can move forward with acquiring a free marker for this Australian veterans gravesite.

Sincerely,

James M. Gray, Cmdr.
