I believe I'm your cousin. I think you called me several years ago, I was probably aloof with you, Sorry! I was getting a lot of calls from family members and people I didn't know at the time, trying to get money from me. I spoke to my mother about a week after you called and she told me who you were and that we were really close as kids. I didn't have anyway of contacting you back though. My last name is no longer Vinet. I would love to talk to you. my cell number is (504) 919 - 3610.

I was told that Lucy married a Hess but I could find no evidence of it. Your response is fantastic, and tells me my info was correct. I'm not sure how to show you the tree I've gotten so far, but it's titled "Falynne's Maternal Family Tree", and it is, of course, on ancestry.com. If you would be kind enough to take a look at it and maybe fill in some blanks. I was also told that Rose's son Anthony has his stepdad's last name (Palmisano), so I can't accurately trace his paternal side. Also, I can find nothing on Lucy's mother Matilde Billiot. So does this mean that Rose would be your mother's sister? I super excited to get a reply from you! Can't wait to see what info you'll have for me if we are on the same track. My personal email is lauries.nicholas@gmail.com
You are more than welcome to contact me that way, too.
Thank you.

Your Great Grandmother was Benedette and great-grandfather Joseph in the 1930 census the census taker spelled the name Dodar and your Great Uncle Paris was spelled Parice. Remember when you search the records you will find many different spellings for the name.

Where did your information regarding Marianne's parents and siblings come from?

The genealogy research done (so far) on the Chitimacha is published online at Rootsweb. (see link below) They don't have Marianne Iris' siblings listed at that site, so I suspect that your information will be very interesting to them.

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~laterreb/theycame/families...

The official Genealogist for the Chitimacha Tribe is Audrey Barnes Westerman, CGRS, but the link above has edhicks79@yahoo.com as their 'contact us' address.

My email is on my Ancestry chart, which is at:
http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/pedigree.aspx?tid=5009294&p...
Yes, I like to think our modern day efforts to tract back and connect the links between ourselfs and our ancestors ~ brings them joy and comfort in their place of "Heaven".

Do you know William Stringfield ? I have emailed him and asked if he could assit me in putting together a linage chart. If I am not mistaken he resides in Plaquemine Parish ~ I have not heard back from him yet .... and he may have experenced trouble with Gustav, as so many others have.
If the information he has is correct ~ it seems it would be a great bennift to the Tribe to work with him on documentation of ancestors and nativity.
Nan

This is VERY interesting. This is also new information for me about Marianne Iris' family and her origins. If it can be proven that Marianne Iris and her family were decended from the Houmas Tribe that fact will further prove the legitimacy of the Chitimacha claim/quest to become a federally recognized Indian tribe. (The Chitimacha application for designation as a Federally recognized Indian Tribe is in process in the Bureau of Indian Affairs.)

Indian people were often classified as black/mulatto, since the french whites of their time made no distinction between Indian and black. Both were 'colored' in their eyes.

Many native born Louisiana people in those times were multi-racial. Marianne appears in the 1810 census of Lafourche under the name Marian Billou, identified as a "Free 'negriffe' 60 year old" [who] "has land pays tax has 10 children" (U.S. Bureau of the Census 1810, 161, line 24.) 'Griffe' was slang for tri-racial: black + Indian + white.

Marianne Iris Billou must have been a remarkable woman. She raised ten children, owned land, and was self supporting/paid taxes, in a time when most women were chattels.

Laurel,
I too desend from Marianne Iris as follows ~
I desend from Francois Ancar and Genevieve Etienne Arlu ~
I have an original death cert. of their daughter Louise Ancar who died in New Orleans in 1841 ( my ggg grandmother )
they are clearly listed as her natural parents.
And to what Indian ancestory do we connect.
Apalachee, Houma, Choctaw, Chitamacha or Atakapa ???
Or maybe a little of all ???
I can tell you that my line stayed in NOLA with Louise's daughter Henriette Lorenzo (a creole child born out of wedlock to Lousie and her father being John Lorenzo a wealthy fruit merchant in New Orleans. Louise died at her domicle at the age of 31 ~ on the corner of Union and Love streets in Faubour Marigny.

Also see Willam Stringfields entry as follows ~
Reviewing my information more recently, Carlos came from Santo Domingo, but his wife was a native woman, Marie Therese BAPTISTE, the daughter of Etienne (Arlu) BAPTISTE and Anna IRIS(parents Joseph IRIS and Francoise ST. THERESE). Her sister Genevieve married Francois ANCAR, and when you compare the remaining ANCAR marriages of the next generation, I would almost guarantee another sister married the other ANCAR brother. Etienne BAPTISTE and Anna IRIS had at least four daughters. My best guess for the fourth family is Martin DuPLESSIS as her husband, but unclear at present. Joseph IRIS and Francoise ST. THERESE(Fanchon in 1770 Census) were the parents of at least five children, two sons, neither had children, and at least three daughters: Anna married Etienne ARLU(BAPTISTE); Marie(1748-1864)Genevieve married Jean BAPTISTE ARLU(BAPTISTE); and Marianne married J. BILLIOT, and moved to lower Lafourche/Terrebonne. Reviewing the 1770 Census finds this family as "black/mulatto" but they were living on their own land, and Fanchon had never been subjected to slavery, since she was born in the colony, before New Orleans was founded(1710 or so). These families were always listed as Free Persons of Color in most records, and could vote and own slaves if they needed them to maintain their lands. The late French period reclassified all the former "sauvage" category to simply "noir" if there was no European blood in the ancestry. DNA is proving this today. Fanchon's children were sent to the nuns to learn French and the Catholic religion. They were discouraged to continue the old traditions that had "nothing to do with making a living(rituals)." Her grandchildren all raised crops and livestock as their neighbors, and followed the European burial practice, the cemetery in Diamond called the BARTHELEMY cemetery from the grandson BARTHELEMY BAPTISTE(his sons were BARTHELEMY) was established "before 1795" when it was first listed in Catholic records. Odd, when I tried to decipher the Native American origins in our area, I found the people were here all along, and their ancestry is all from the same original family.
Laurel,
I also beleave Genevieve Etienne Arlu Baptiste Ancar (wife of Francois Ancar and granddaughter of Fanchon (Francoise St Therese) & Joseph Iris ~ (my gggg grandmother)may have left us a clue about the nativity of Joseph Iris. Her name appears in a Colonal Noritorial Record also as dit "Abbe". Acording to Houma and other Tribal records ~ one of our other early ancestors and patriarch of the Houma Lafourche ~ Terribonne area (including Billiot families) also used Abbe in his name ~ a Choctaw word for killer. See the web site for the Lafourche Biloxy Chitimacha Indians web page.
Fell free to email me at southcoastweaver@aol.com
Nan

Your Family History book about the Dardars, Billiots and Iris/Nerisse group sounds fascinating. I'd be glad to share my research on our family. You are welcome to look at my research here.
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=PED&...

Do you have more information about our early ancestors, Marianne Iris/Marie Nerisse and her "husband" Jean Baptiste Billiot? I have gotten different answers regarding Marianne Iris/Marie Nerisse's ancestors, and her personal origins/history. With her name spelled so many different ways she has been difficult to trace. (Found Also As Marie Narisse, include Marie Enerisse, Mariane Erice, Mary Eric, Marian(n)e Eris, Marianne Iris, Marie Iris, Marianne Billiot)

My Dardar ancestor, Rosalie Dardar, b. 1827, was the daughter of Michael Dardar and Adelaide Billiot. Adelaide was the daughter of Jean Baptiste Billiot and Marianne Iris/Marie Nerisse.
Our family history is colorful. It's detailed out to some extent at the links below:

The Houmas Indian Tribe (a Dardar being one of the founding families):
http://www.rootsweb.com/~laterreb/houmaindians.htm

The Chitimacha Indian Tribe (the same Dardars are also a founding family in that group):
http://www.biloxi-chitimacha.com/

More about Louisiana Indians:
http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/louisiana/index.htm#Ch...

I am researching and, in fact, doing a documentary on a particular branch of the Dardar family. What I know of this family is that, circa 1963-66 this family lived on an island in quonset huts left by the army after WWII. They (many of them) suffered from an unfortunate genetic mutation that resulted in microcephalism. I believe they made their living as shrimpers and perhaps the father was named Hippolyte Dardar.
