My 4G-Grandfather, James Dardis, was born in Ballinalac, Co. Westmeath, in 1766 and emigrated to the US in 1795 or -6. All of us with an interest in tracing the Dardis family in Ireland should be aware of an article by Hubert Gallwey, "The Family of Dardis", in Riocht na Midhe: Reports of the Meath Archaeological and Historical Society, vol. VI (#2), pp 58-80 (1976). The article traces the family in Ireland from the late 12th to the mid-19th centuries and has some reasonable guesses as to its origins in France. Unfortunately "Riocht" is very hard to find in the US - Universities that are heavily Irish (would you believe Notre Dame and Boston College?) have complete sets. I have a copy of the article and will be glad to send copies to any who give me their snailmail address. I will be especially glad to do that if anybody can give me Dardis information in return. We all will be very grateful if anybody can establish a definite link between the family lines described by Gallwey and our ancestors in the US, Ireland, and elsewhere.
Good hunting,
Woody
