John Dardis, lived inSandusky Ohio 1856-1889, born circa 1825-26

I'm looking for information on the parents and origin of my great great grandfather. My John Dardis, was born in Ireland and came to the US sometime before 1850 when (according to later census records) his first son, Thomas, was born in New York. Sometime between 1850 and 1856 he moved to the Sandusky, Ohio area, where he lived and farmed until his death in 1889. His other children, all of whom were born in Ohio, were sons John, James, Henry, and William and his daughters Jennie, Rosa, Mary and Betty. His wife’s name(in the 1870 and 1880 census) was Jane and she also was apparently born in Ireland.

The only other information I have on him is that he was born sometime around 1825-1826 and served in the 72nd Ohio Infantry during the Civil War.

If anyone can help me connect him to any of the other Dardis families and ultimately to his Dardis forebearers in Ireland, I would certainly appreciate it.

Bill
Dardis- Dublin, Ireland and England

Hi-

I am looking for information on the Dardis family from Dublin, Ireland. My grandfather was Patrick Dardis born in March 1916 and died in 2000 at age 84. He had several siblings. One was William "Willie" Dardis. Willie's children live in England, Ronald, Michael and Marie. Others are Bernard, John and Elizabeth "Lil". Elizabeth married Anthony O'Flarthey.

My grandparents are Patrick Dardis and Kathleen Dowdall married in 1940 in Dublin. They had 5 children James, Patrick, Phyllis, Valerie and Dermot. James and Patrick moved to England and the rest immigrated to the States.

Any information would be a great help. Thank you!

Dear Woody,
I am also related to James Dardis through the Caldwells. I would love to have a copy of the article you mentioned about the Dardis' Irish connections. I don't have any real info to share but would be glad to pay for copying and postage.

Right now my big concern is the Sims side of the family. The info on Ancestry trees does not make sense. If you could help clear up some of these dates and names would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Michelle Monroe Wirth

New information on Thomas Dardis, brother of James Dardis

Previously known information on Thomas Dardis, brother of James (1766-1846) is that he was born in Ireland, was admitted to the Tennessee Bar in 1803, was elected to the Tennessee General Assembly from Knox County in 1807, was wounded in a duel with General John Cocke in 1808, and died from his wound ca. 1810. Ancestry.com records (U. S. Naturalization Records Indexes, 1794-1995) shows an entry for a Thomas Dardis on Oct. 3, 1801 (Record O. M. 1, p. 36 or 56).

This record was found in the NARA microfilm files (Roll M102, Cabinet 11A, Drawer 2) on May 18, 2011 and reads as follows: "Thomas Dardis a native of Ireland aged about 28 years now a resident of Washington County in the District of Columbia Labourer made oath that it was bona fide his intention to become a Citizen of the United States and to renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, State or Sovereignty whatsoever and particularly to the King of Great Britain to whom he was before a Subject." It is very likely, but not definitively proven, that this Thomas Dardis, b. ca. 1773, is James Dardis's brother.

The activities of a Thomas Dardis, a schoolteacher from Cappagh, Westmeath, in the Irish Rebellion of 1798, are mentioned in "Multyfarnham Parish History" by Peter Wallace (Westmeath Examiner Ltd., Mullingar, 1987). Cappagh the village just across the River Inny from Ballinalack, the known birthplace of James Dardis. The Rebel activity described was a battle with British infantry and Irish loyalist militia in the area of Granard, Streete, Ballinalack, Multyfarnham, and Crookedwood (Longford and Westmeath) on September 4 and 5, 1798. Again, there is no direct evidence that this is the same Thomas Dardis, but the home place and the apparent age and education of the rebel Thomas allow this to be the same person. And this Thomas, identified as a rebel, would have had to leave Ireland or be outlawed for life, and summarily hanged if captured.

Re: Dardis Families in Ireland and USA

Hello Pam, This is in reply to a message you sent on Ancestry some years back. Your Dardis relative that came to America in the pickle barrel is also my ancestor. And the story is true. I have heard it all my life and was told by my Grandmother. She was Josephine Sewell Dardis, wife of Frank Dardis. He was the son of James Dardis of Tennessee. The brother of James is the person in the pickle barrel and is believed to have been killed in a duel in the early 1800s. He was evidently a typical fighting Irishman and got into one too many. The Dardis' were prominent people in the Knoxville Tennessee area and owned a lot of property and land surrounding Knoxville and in the city as well. My Grandfather moved to Oklahoma in 1917 when my Mother was 6 years old and died in 1938. Have fun in your research. If you would like to email me direct, my personal email is lilolev6@yahoo.com My name is Roy Ray and I currently live in Erick, Oklahoma altho my house is up for sale and I might be moving in the near future. The relationship is distant but I think I have found another cousin.
Sincerly
Roy Ray

New information on James Dardis (1766-1846) ancestry in Ireland

On March 18, 2011, I found the following information in the Mullingar library. The source is "A Partial List of Some Memorials in Westmeath Churchyards" by Micheal O'Conlain, page 456. Inscription found in Rathowen Parish, Rathaspick churchyard.
"Have Mercy O Lord on the soul of William DARDIS who departed this life 11 November 1788 aged 74 years with three of his children who died in youthfull innocence. Erected by his daughter Catherine TRAYNOR alias DARDIS"

Catherine Dardis Traynor is fully documented by information in the US (Franklin Co. TN Historical Archives) as the sister of James, Thomas, William(II) and Edward Dardis, therefore the William Dardis(I) referred to on the tombstone is the father of all of these siblings. Suggestions that the Irish parents of the Franklin/Knox County TN Dardis siblings are James Dardis (I) and Mary Wilson would appear to be incorrect.

Looking for Dardis Family - Co. Meath

I am still researching the Dardis family from Co. Meath through Bridget Dardis who was born there and married George Joseph Bishop in Wexford City in 1910. Her father was Joseph Dardis, a shopkeeper - Are there any Trade Directories I can access or please could someone do a look-up for me? It is possible that Bridget was born in 1874 in Navan, Co. Meath and that her parents were Joseph Dardis as I said and Elizabeth Bennett but I cannot conform this at this stage.

Hello Mark; My name is Roy Ray and I am a direct decendant of James Dardis. My Grandfather was Frank Dardis, son of James B. Dardis and Grandson of James and Lucy Sims Dardis of Tennessee. My Grandfather was born in Franklin Co. Tennessee in 1856 and died in Fort Cobb, Oklahoma in 1936. Your post that I am replying to was back in Jan 2002. I am guessing that you might already have any information that you were searching for but I always enjoy finding another family connection. My Ancestry tree is a public tree on Ancestry.com under the name Ray Family Tree and includes the Ray, Dardis, Sewell, and Pointer lines of my family and other related branches of those lines.
I started researching my family 20 years ago but quit for several years and only recently began the research again. There are several books on the Dardis family but I have never found one to buy. The one that I did buy was a sham and had only one small mention of a Dardis.
If you would like to collaborate on any research, I can be reached by personal email at lilolev6@yahoo.com
Thank you
Roy Ray

HI!

I read your post with interest.
The children of Michael Dardis from West Meath, you have them unorganized.

A genealogist that is on this board sent a family member the information from a book.

But basically all names you have listed are correct.
You should ask Jerry Matinek if he has a copy.

The book was written in 2004 and is called the Modified Register for Michael Dardis.

It has an Index.
But it is Coherent.

Hope this helps.

Darcy

I would be glad to receive a copy of the Dardis article. I can't give much in return. I have traced my Dardis line back to my GGF John Dardis who emigrated to New Zealand around 1860. His origins are as yet undiscovered. Maybe you know about "The History of the Counts of Guines and the Lords of Ardres" by Lambert of Ardres printed in translation by Uni of Pennsylvania Press in 2001 (ISBN 0-8122-3568-1) which seems to indicate that descendants of Geoffrey or Arnold d'Ardres who went to England with William the Conquerer were the origins of all the Irish Dardis family. Their history is continued in the Doomsday Book (spelt Dardis) which can be found on the web.
Happy to hear of more Dardis information from USA.
Best Regards
Geoff Dardis-Martin

You had a family tree some time back of the Bishop family in Waterford City. This family is part of my research and the George Bishop you mention is part of that tree although I don't think you knew it at the time of your research. Please get in contact with me as I'd love to swap notes.

On the Irish 1911 census there are only 2 young girls with the Dardis surname shown in Wexford. They are in a boarding type school and I think they are the daughters of a Violet Dardis age 24 shown on the 1901 uk census at hallam barracks Sheffield. Worth a look at ?
A bridget dardis is shown on the same Wexford marriage page vol4 page 394 oct - dec 1910 as a george bishop.
hope this helps
regards Tim Kelly

LD -

Thanks for your interest. My earliest known ancestral Dardis was my gggGreat Grandfather James Dardis, who came to the States with his brother Thomas most likely in 1795. Much later their siblings Edward (Ned), William, and Catherine Traynor (nee Dardis) came over about 1817. Family legend has it that James was forced to flee Ireland because of a confrontation with the Authorities in the runup to the Rebellion of 1798. One version has it that he killed a tax collector. Another idea championed by Jim Smith, a historian of late 18th-century Ireland and a professor at Notre Dame, is that James may have been a poteen boiler.

The known facts from Ireland are sparse. James was born in Ballinalac(k), Westmeath, in 1766, After he came to the States he quickly became prominent in East Tennessee politics and business, primarily in Knoxville. So it is clear that he brought significant resources with him. In the 1820's he moved to Middle Tennessee and settled in Franklin County (Winchester). He died in 1846. His gravestone stands in the Old City Cemetery in Winchester and is perfectly legible.

My main objective is to connect my Dardis line to the Dardises mentioned in the Riocht article authored by Hubert Gallwey. This would connect my line back to Henty II's Norman invaders of Ireland in 1171.

I have a considerable amount of information that I would be glad to exchange. It will be easier if we can exchange email dorectly, if you are willing to share your address. Mine is w00dy@earthlink.net ("w00dy" with numeral zeroes not letter o's).

Look forward to further exchanges.

Cheers,
w00dy

Im really surprised seeing all theses posts saying that the family is Irish. I was sure it was italian !!! I am Brazilian and My great-grandfather was born in 1840 in south Italy and immigrated to brazil in 1900. I know my great-grandfather had some brothers and someones immigrated to Brazil like him and another ones to USA. Currently Im living in UK and when I visit Ireland I'll investigate about that.

Hi Adele -

The Dardis article may have some useful info for you. One Christopher Dardis from Killucan Parish, Westmeath, died in 1870 and had 6 sons, one named Christopher. The latter would be about the right age to have lived to 1924. I will be glad to send the article to you as an attachment if you send your email address to me.

Cheers, Woody Woodruff

Dardis family history in Ireland - Riocht na Midhe article

My 4G-Grandfather, James Dardis, was born in Ballinalac, Co. Westmeath, in 1766 and emigrated to the US in 1795 or -6. All of us with an interest in tracing the Dardis family in Ireland should be aware of an article by Hubert Gallwey, "The Family of Dardis", in Riocht na Midhe: Reports of the Meath Archaeological and Historical Society, vol. VI (#2), pp 58-80 (1976). The article traces the family in Ireland from the late 12th to the mid-19th centuries and has some reasonable guesses as to its origins in France. Unfortunately "Riocht" is very hard to find in the US - Universities that are heavily Irish (would you believe Notre Dame and Boston College?) have complete sets. I have a copy of the article and will be glad to send copies to any who give me their snailmail address. I will be especially glad to do that if anybody can give me Dardis information in return. We all will be very grateful if anybody can establish a definite link between the family lines described by Gallwey and our ancestors in the US, Ireland, and elsewhere.

Good hunting,
Woody

Re: Michael Dardis family of West Meath

Hi Jerry - Sorry to be so long in replying. I have scanned and OCR'd the Dardis article and can send it to you as an attachment if you will send your email address to me. Unfortunately I can't make a definite connection between the people mentioned and your Michael, but there are plenty of Michaels and there may be some useful clues for you.

Cheers, Woody
