Note: I just realized that the previous reply to this thread had nothing to do with Henry Calvin Dare - but this reply does...
Henry Calvin Dare's father was Melchior Dare b 13 Oct 1790 in NC, d 15 Apr 1862 in Davidson Co, NC. His mother was Susannah Conrath, b 9 July 1791 in Somerset Co, PA and d 20 Nov 1876 in Davidson Co, NC. His Grandfather, also named Melchior Darr, is listed in the landowners census of Lynn, Northampton Co, PA in 1800. Melchior Darr was born abt 1752 in Weisenberg, Lehigh Co, PA and d 30 Dec 1833 in Davidson Co, NC. Melchior Dare Jr's mother was Elizabeth Frank, b 27 Dec 1754 in Rowan Co, NC and d 19 Apr 1825 in Davidson Co, NC.
Most other residents of the town of Lynn, PA in 1800 were German. The AGB Index shows Melchior Darr, born in PA circa 1750, along with George, Elizabeth, Hendley, Henry, Jacob, John, Joseph, Leonard, Matthias, Mikel, Nicholas, Rudolph, and Ulright (probably Ulricht mispelled) Darr.
I suggest that this Darr family ancestry could actually be old German - with Darr being a normal German name. The cool thing is that they were here before the Revolutionary War!
Since the Virginia Dare story was well known, and perhaps since Melchior Darr, Sr married a wife from NC, I can see why that branch of the family might have Anglicized the spelling to Dare. Perhaps the Darr and Dare families have the same roots in Europe, who knows! DNA tests could be useful in this case to see how close the Darrs match the Dares.
