Re: Virginia Dare descendant?

If you have the Dare surname, you could be a descendant of Virginia's father who was also part of the lost colony. (That is if he survived.) Or you could be descended from a later Dare immigrant. As was pointed out, if Virginia Dare survived she would have changed her surname after marriage.

1939 Dare Family Book

While Bill Montgomery's book was an accomplishment for his day - it is fraught with errors that have been corrected in subsequent books. Robert Dallas Dare's 3 volumes on the Dare Family (published 1996-1999) are still available from the Gloucester County Historical Society in Woodbury, NJ (either in person or on-line)

Many people in those 3 books have contacted me since 2003, and have further corrected that info, so if you are using The Dare Family History - by Montgomery, William Harry Poughkeepsie, NY , 1939, or even the recent 3 Dare books as a source, you should re-verify your information by downloading the latest privatized Dare Family Tree from www.darefamiy.com. (Warning: it contains 77,000 names)

Robert Dallas Dare and his staff of historians in the 90's also disproved the story published in his own original book about Captain William Dare owning the Blue Anchor Tavern. We now are 100% sure that it was his cousin William Dare who established the tavern on the west side of the Delaware.

Captain William Dare had two cousins named William Dare in the colonies, one who ended up in Cecil County, DE, and the other one who owned that tavern and later owned others in MD and VA. Meanwhile, back in England, we have now discovered more cousins of his, also named William Dare and are very close to linking many of those trees to ours!

Stay tuned to www.darefamily.com, and www.genealogywise.com/group/Dare_Family for details as they develop!

Dave Bates
Dare Family Association of NJ Historian

Re: Direct decendent of Virginia Dare?

It's a bit confusing how they would compare DNA to find a direct descendant of Virgina Dare. If they are to compare maternal DNA then that would have to compare with Virginia's maternal line and the surname would be changing every generation. Her mother's maiden name was White, but she died in the Americas. They would have to find the maternal line of her grandmother and great grandmother in England and try to trace that to a current line today.....and that would be someone with an entirely different surname today.

And to compare Y DNA is only done through males. They could compare Virginia's grandfather's Dare line through known Dare ancestors that came directly from him. That still wouldn't prove anyone to be a direct descendant. It would be someone related but how?

Re: Virginia DARE and the Lost Colony

Virgina Dare wasn't taken from her family. She was
Virginia Dare was part of a colony of settlers along with her parents. Her grandfather returned to England for supplies and when he returned 3 years later the entire colongy had vanished. He found the word "Croatoan" carved on a tree leading him to think that the colony moved to the nearby island of Croatoan. He was going to try to go there but then a hurricane hit and he ended up going back to England.

The whereabouts of Virgina Dare and the colony have never been found out or proven for sure. 100 years later the colony was searched for again and they found Indians who spoke English and some had grey eyes. The colony could have mixed with an Indian tribe.

No one could say what happened to Virginia Dare in particular. The DNA study on the remains of Pochahantas sounds interesting but they would need to find a current Dare female to compare maternal DNA wouldn't they?

My husband is a green-eyed Lumbee Indian. :-).. The seat of the Lumbee tribe is Pembroke, Robeson County, NC (on border of SC).
The website for the tribe is http://www.lumbeetribe.com/

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumbee
Lumbee
Total population
53,000[citation needed]

Regions with significant populations
United States
North Carolina
Virginia

Languages
English
The Lumbee are a Native American tribe of North Carolina, though their origins are disputed. The name "Lumbee" is derived from the region near the Lumber River (or Lumbee River) that winds through Robeson County, North Carolina.

In 1885, the Lumbee were recognized by the State of North Carolina as Croatan Indians. They unsuccessfully sought federal recognition thereafter. In 1951, the Robeson County Commissioners conducted the first tribal election of a name. Tribal members voted for adoption of the name "Lumbee Indians of North Carolina." The Lumbee claim to be descendants of the Cheraw and related Siouan-speaking tribes of Native Americans originally inhabiting the coastal regions of the state of North Carolina.

In 1956, the United States Congress passed House Resolution 4656, known as the Lumbee Act, which recognized the Lumbee as American Indians. However, the Act also specifically prohibited the Lumbee from receiving federal services ordinarily provided to federally recognized tribes through the Bureau of Indian Affairs. As the only tribe in this circumstance,[1] the Lumbee have sought full federal recognition through congressional legislation.[2][3] Federal recognition through congressional legislation is generally opposed by some recognized tribes,[4][5] most recently in 2007.[6]
Harry Dare (my grt g/father) moved to Western Australia (by his own accord) to work on the timber mills in the south-west around Rockingham. He certainly wasn't a naughty boy who was shipped off by His Majesty.

Convicts weren't the only people to come to Australia.

Hi,

My gg grandfather was George Henry Dare, who was born in 1837 in Sidbury, Devon. He later moved to Berkshire where he married Louisa Bowden around 1872. It was his son, Harry George Dare, who moved to Western Australia in the late 1800's (not sure exact year). He married Adelaide Hymus in Rockingham, WA, in 1901. They later moved to Jardee to work on the timber mills.

I haven't found any solid info on George Henry Dare's parents but I think their names were Thomas Dare and Rebecca something. I would love to continue the line so if anyone has any info that would be great.

Thanks
Ryan

The Dare's were prevalent around Dorset in the 1600's. In 1865 the Monmouth Rebellion, a Protestant uprising against King James (a catholic), was strongly supported by the people of Somerset and Dorset who were predominantly protestant and resented the suppression of their freedom to worship.

The rebellion failed and King James sought revenge on the rebels with many public hangings and subsequent gruesome burning of entrails, quartering of corpses, boiling them in salt and dipping them in pitch for long-term exhibition designed to strike awe into the West Country.

An alternative punishment was to be sold to traders and businessmen in Jamaica and other West Indies territories.

There were Dare's amongst the rebels and it is believed that some of these were sent to to Jamaica, never to return to England.

I am personally not aware of any particular Dare's who were transported, being the subject of future research.

Geoff
Melbourne
Australia

Among the children of Thomas and Hannah (ISAAC) DARE was Joseph DARE who was a well known domestic missionary in Leicester c 1850 and about whom quite a bit has been written. My interest is in another son of Thomas and Hannah DARE - Thomas DARE who married Mary LUDFORD 3 Dec 1821 at St Mary, Hinckley, Leicester. They had a daughter Mary DARE christened 3 Nov 1822 at St Mary Hinckley. However shortly thereafter Thomas, Mary & daughter Mary DARE moved to London residing Praed Street, Paddington. Daughter Mary subsequently married Jonathan Vicessimus BUTTON - they were my gr gr grandparents. I've accumulated quite a bit of information on the DARE'S and can be contacted directly at arsenal@sympatico.ca

Re: Virginia Dare descendant? Probably not.

I have no problem with Indian, Moorish, or any other color relative, but why do you think you would be a descendant of Virginia Dare? If she married an Indian, as is now commonly thought, she probably would not have used the Dare name. If she married an Englishman, she would have taken on his last name. Right?

So to be correct, you are most likely a Dare cousin of Virginia Dare's if you are descended from a Dare. Even if you are descended from Virginia Dare's father, you would still be her cousin.

PS: Most Dares in the south have found that they are descended from the Dares who came to Maryland in the 1680's.
Dares in the north are mostly descended from Captain William Dare who came to South Jersey in 1680. Of course families moved all over the country, so this is just a generality that is not always true as people moved to various parts of the country.

When you locate your exact Dare ancestors, send me an email and I'll gladly match it against our National Dare Family database!

Dave Bates
Dare Family Association Historian

davebates77@hotmail.com www.darefamily.com
.......................
Good job with the census, etc! Clara Dare Ettinger's book on the Dares is quite a bit outdated and has some inaccuracies, and some misproven. (Thanks for the link though!) For the latest info on the ancestors of this branch of the Indiana and Illinois Dare Family, go to www.darefamily.com from which you can download the Dare Family database, or just browse through the tree. These Dares descend from William Dare of Lyme Regis, Dorset, England, born about 1605, whose grandson Captain William Dare came to South Jersey about 1680.

Dave Bates
Current Dare Family Association Historian
davebates77@hotmail.com
There are two Indiana Dare Family Reunions currently held every year. The one near Liberty, IN held the first Sunday afternoon in august each year is the largest.

Hi Ryan
my apologies if my comments offended.
The fact is that in 1891 at the age of 15 Harry is described as an "inmate in a reform school". Within the next 10 years he has gone to WA and married. I am glad to find that he wasnt 'invited' to leave and that he left to make a new start for himself. I appreciate your correcting me; he is my family too.
I'd love to know what else you have on our line in Australia? My knowledge ends with Harry in 1891.
I guess that we need to swap trees to compare.
Would you prefer to communicate directly ? my email is kevinchubb@paradise.net.nz
I moved to New Zealand in 86/87 by the way.
Did you know that a branch of our tree settled in the US ?
Francis Samuel Dare b 1885 went in 1905 to Illinois, followed by his mother, brother & sister in 1908 and finally his father Mark (b 1862) in 1911.

Keep in touch
Kevin
I myself was born in Axminster, Devon.
I have just learnt from Ryan Hepworth in a reply on this message board that (naughty boy) Harry Dare 1876 came to Australia (probably assisted by H M government....) so I will be looking to investigate that line?
I can also help with the Devon side of the Dares.
look forward to hearing from you.
my email kevinchubb@paradise.net.nz

Hi Ryan
O.M.G!
George Henry Dare's parents were indeed Thomas born 1813 in Offwell, Nr Honiton, Devon. Thomas did marry Rebecca (I dont have a surname), she was born 1814 in Colyton, Devon, I believe. They had 9 children, George was the eldest.
Thomas himself was the eldest of 5 siblings.
Their parents were William Dare (c 1750) and Jane Fry.
My mother is a Dare, descended from Thomas' brother John Dare b 1820.
Your info has been an exciting find for me.
Where do we go from here ??
Cheers, Kevin
