I don't know much about Otis other than he was my grandfather. I am Matthew Richard Dargis, son of Richard Otis Dargis (Paul's brother). Most of what I see here is what my dad has told me. So I don't think I'll be much help. The spelling of our last name was D'argis, but then changed to Dargis. I heard, it was changed after the move from Montreal. I've heard rumors that we are descendants of The Pirate Lafitte. Don't know if it is true or not, but I've heard it a few times.

There are DeCoteau's in my family. I had an aunt Alice DeCoteau and she had a brother Peter. I know they spell their name differently but that could be attributed to Americanizing the name.

Legend was that a D'Argis male was married to a DeCoteau, who possibly came from Indian stock. There may be some merit to that as there is a large tribe of Chippewa in North Dakota, on the Canadian border, with the last name of DeCoteau.

My grandfather Adam Bonedice Dargis arrived in 1909. He had lived in Kowno (Kaunas) which is in Lithuania. Another Dargis from Kowno arrived later the same year Joachim Dargis. I do not know if they were related and if so how.

You may wish to visit the Ellis Island website and this may help you in your search.

As a child, I remember being told my grandfather had been a member of a fairly large child. I did not know my grandfather as he died in 1949 before I was born in 1952.

How odd. It is rare to see my first name in print, let alone my first and last name, and it is not me! Even stranger is the fact that the date you posted this message is my birthday.
My father-in-law came from Lithuania - Kazyz Dargis (he went by Charlie). I don't know much about his side of the family, as he passed away years ago, but I could talk to my mother-in-law to see what she remembers, if that would help.

No, I have never heard anything about the Panama Canal incident.
The information I have on the Dargis family is:
Napoleon L. Dargis was born about 1846. He married Angelina Dupuis in Quebec about 1878. They had 9 children: 2 were born in Canada-Emma(1879), George(1882)...the other 7 children were all born in Little Falls Minnesota- Leo(1885), Otis(1886), Aloysius(1888), Edith(1890), twins- Blanche and Beatrice (1893), and Marie(1895). The family came to Minnesota about 1884-1885. The story I've heard was that Napoleon had a lumber and bricking company in Little falls. His bookeeper stole from him and he lost his business. Because of this, they left and moved to New Orleans to work at the lumber companies down here in about 1900. He worked for a lumber company in Ruddock, La and in New Orleans. He died in 1904 (at 58yrs) and Angelina died in 1938- both died in New Orleans. There, they were buried in St. Mary's Cemetery. Also, their children Emma, George, Otis, Edith Marie, and Blanche(and husband) were buried there.
Aloysius Dargis was my father-in-law. His son, George was my husband.

Glad to hear from you. I am not related to the Dargis family, but my sister's husband is. His name is Paul Dargis, son of Otis Dargis. I am trying to help him find out about his family history. Any information you may have would be greatly appreciated.
He knows little about his family. All he knows for sure is where Otis was born and that the family originally came from Quebec before moving to Louisianna. He also told me that Otis Dargis's father died while helping build the Panama Canal. Have you ever heard that story?
Thanks for getting back to me and appreciate any clues you can send my way.

My great grandfather, Joseph Dargis came to America in 1909 and went to Detroit, Michigan to be with his brother. (sorry, don't know his name). Two years later Joseph's wife, Ursula, and his eldest daughter came to be with him. They had two more daughters in Detroit, the youngest being my grandmother Stephanie Josephine Dargis on Oct. 18, 1916. They returned to Lithuania a few years later. I don't know if that will help or if this is connected.

Dargis

My grandmother, Stephanie Josephine Dargis was born Oct. 14, 1916 in Detroit, Mich, to a Joseph and Ursula Dargis both from Lithuania. She had two older sisters, Rose and Adelle and an older brother. She has told me that her parents had a small shop in New York city shortly before they returned to Lithuania. Rose stayed behind in New York to work and shortly thereafter was married to a John Jenkins. My grandmother lived in Lithuania most of her childhood until she was about 18 years old. She and her sister Adelle went to New York to stay with her sister Rose who has sent them money to travel. World War II broke out and that was the last they ever saw or heard from their parents or their older brother whose name I do not have. She is now 84 years old and on her behalf I write this. She wished to know any information as to her parents or any other relatives who may either still be in Lithuania or residing here in America. Any information would greatly be appreciated.
