My Enoch was definitely born in Worcester as was his wife and several of this children. This has been documented by references in a Will of the father of his wife Sarah Haskew and also in the several Census returns during his life time.

The name Enoch seems to be a family name and one son and grandsons had that name.

I should be very interested to hear of a Halifax Darke. I think the family lived for a short time in somewhere like Todmorden!

Happy hunting

Best wishes,

Richard

I noted your interest in the Darke family, specifically the marriage of Leonard Darke and Isabella Clark at Worcester. I have researched the family for several years. I have information extending back 3 generations from Leonard and Isabella. Some of the data is based documents re. leased property in Frog Lane where the Darkes were fisherman for several generations.
I am descended from Leonard, son of Leonard and Isabella, who married Elizabeth Stiles. I have his will. Believe it or not I have seen the bed sheets that are mentioned in that 1715 will.I have a photograph if you are interested. The son of Elizabeth and Leonard, also a Leonard, moved to Gloucester where he married Susannah Darke. I suspect that she was a cousin but I have not been able to establish the link. Susannah Darke was a personal friend of the Countess of Huntingdon, who was active in the early Methodist movement.
I would like to compare data as I have several issues that I would like to confirm or reject.
Sincerely
Maurice Knight
Vancouver, BC

Hi Janine

Leonard Darke is related to both my huband and myself. Leonard's father (another Leonard) was the brother of our ancestor William Darke.

I would be interested in any information you can give me and hopefully reciprocate by trying to fill in any gaps that you have.

Eveline

I have a fairly complete family tree for Leonard Darke and Isabella Clarke, born around 1680.

My grandfather (Thomas Darke Fry) was a Darke who came to the US around 1920. My Darke family tree has some gaps in it around the 1920s when it becomes more detailed in the US, not England.

I would be interested in connecting with a Darke or Fry (Chocolates/Bristol) in England who could fill in some of the gaps.

I'm happy to share the Darke family tree that has been handed down for many generations.

Janine (Darke Fry) Black

I am very interested to hear from anyone researching the Darkes or Haskews of Worcester, particularly in the 18th. and early 19th. Centuries.

My Great great grandfather Enoch was born there in 1798 and marries Sarah Haskew in 1818. Their first children were born there and baptised in Anglican Churches:James 1820, Enoch 1824. Enock and Ann Askew 1826, Emily Maria, 1828, Edwin James 1831 and Anne Sarah 1833.

In particular, being a musician I am keen to try to establish whether there is a link between myself and a famous London organist, Dr. Harold Edwin Darke (1888-1976)whose nonconformist forbears came from Worcester.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Darke butcher family of 19th c NYC

Have been working on a Richard Darke (ca 1770-1834) family of NYC, 12th and 20th-22nd wards, who spread into Westchester and Dutchess Cos., NY, and also Hudson Co., NJ. Have done a great deal of census work but have found no other records (until WWI draft, etc.). One cemetery in Amenia, Dutchess co, NY. This is NOT the Orange Co., NY, Darke family who migrated upstate (unless much earlier in England). The Stanton family history says that the Richard Darke family was English and was never naturalized; however, every single census record (except one 1900 one out of 30 I have looked at) says father born NY. Some sons (by two marriages) of Richard were Charles, Henry, George, Edward, and Nathaniel. The name was often misread on the census as Dark, Drake, or Dart. Any information welcome.

Vivien:
I checked the 1881 census and there were three Leonards who were possible ancestors of yours and the father of Gertrude: Leonard#1 born 1841 and lived on King St. He was a fisherman. Leonard #2 his son born 1861 also a fisherman. Leonard #3 born 1848 living London Road. Leonard #4 his son born 1880. There was no Gertrude: presumably she was born after 1881.
I have a very large file on the Worcester Darkes with many lines researched.(back to 1630) Interesting to note that the name "Williams" crops up often. I have one branch that might connect: John Darke married Sarah Williams and had twins: Leonard and William Williams. William Williams had a daughter Ann Bell Darke. She married a Samuel Osborne and in 1881 they lived on Wyldes Lane.
If you want to go further with your research, I could send you a file or snail a family tree to you. I would like more data on your grand parents eg. name of Leonard's wife.
Regards, Maurice

Leonard Darke, Worcestershire & Gloucestershire

I am researching the Darke family of Worcestershire/Gloucestershire. The name "Leonard" figured prominently in a long line of Darkes who lived in Frog Lane/Severn Street, Worcester. They were mostly fishermen. In the 18th C Leonard Darke moved to Gloucester where he married Susannah Darke. I presume that they were cousins but have been unable to find the link. I believe Susannah was the daughter of James/Hephzibah Darke who attended the Barton St. Presbyterian Chapel. I would like to exchange data with anyone who has an interest in this family.

Hi there,
yes we certainly have the same family!

Matilda married Richard Doyle on Dec 17, 1892 in Plymouth.
Richard was born circa 1868 in Cashel Tipperary - we have a few Doyle family members names, but no birthdates etc as you can imagine the Irish ancestry is a bit more complicated. Richard was in the Army so travelled a lot. Their children were born in St Austell, Nova Scotia Canada, Glasgow Scotland etc - we found a lot of this info when someone finally tracked them down in the Scottish 1901 census.

We have a few photo's of Richard but none of Matilda or any of the other Darke family members although when talking to my mil just the other day she thought she did have at least one of them together with Susan Darke.... 'somewhere'!

If you'd like to swap info, feel free to email me at parsarnz@yahoo.ca It would be great to be able to pass this on to my mother in law as she is the only surviving Doyle of that particular family and was an only child.

Cheers, and thanks for the quick reply.
Sally

My Grandmother was Gertrude Darke of Wylds Lane, Worcester who married Walter Williams in 1902. Her father was a Leonard Darke, and a witness signature on the marriage certificate is a Florence Darke. Gran was one of a large family, 9 or 10 I think. I have only just started on my research, having found the certificate in my late mother's belongings.

yes it is the same family - Matilda Louisa Darke - born 1873 was my grandmother aunt - would it be possible to tell me your mother in laws maiden name - as i could not trace a Matilda in the 1901 census as i do not know her married name
My grandmother(bn 1907) was dtr of matildas brother william (b 23/3/1880 d 1948), matilda had brother richard (1870) and sister Susan (1875)
Matildas mother was Mary Ann Vern - it was her second marriage, she was married to samuel Hernaman who died - so Matilda has 2 step sisters one of whom i have traced herfamily in 1901
The Reverend Enoch Darke was also my Great Great Grandfather and I have much information on my side of the tree which mainly is in the north of England as the family seems to have migrated to Manchester certainly before the death of a daughter Esther in 1837. Unfortunately I am a late comer to the Internet and most of my research ntil recently was an offshoot to research for a
n MLitt at Bristol in the late 60's. My main interest in those days as now has been to try and establish links with the Organist and Composer Harold Darke 1888 -1976. I am also an organist, far less distiguished, and as a youngster I had been told that my Grandfather, Charles Henry (1870 - 1949), son of another Charles Henry (1841-1907) was his cousin. I dismissed this for a long time as Granddad was a great romancer but recently, thanks to your entry about Enoch (verified by spouse Sarah Haskew) I discovered that we had Worcester connections. As a teenager I met Harold Darke when he opened the organ at Bradford Cathedral in the early 60's. He told me that he had a cousin Henry who had lived in Worcester. Recent research has shown that Harold Darke's father Samuel,b.c.1842 (spouse Arundel) was a bank clerk who came from Worcester. His father was Peter, who I think worked for the 'China' business, and his spouse was Maria. Although I know that the name 'Darke' is more common in what I like to describe as the Three Choirs and Counties region, I should like to think there is in fact a link here particularly as it would appear most of these characters were literate. I should be delighted to hear from you in any event. Richard (b.1945)

I went to the FHL and found Ann and Frederick's marriage certificate which listed Ann as
Ann Smedley Garner, and a spinster which means she has never been married before.
I also found her christening record in the St. Helen's Parich Register. There she was
listed as Ann Smedley. Upon further research, i think i have found her father, Richard's
burial date March 19, 1807. if this date is true, Ann would be 9 at the time of her
father's death. i believe that Ann's mother, Elizabeth then married again to a Garner.
I also believe that her son Richard Garner Darke was named that in rememberance of both
of the father figures in her life. i just haven't found the Garner yet, i will keep
searching and will let you know of any findings.
