Re: Charles William Darr

Hi Pat. Charles William Darr is my 2nd Great Grandfather (Charles William Darr > Odis Edna Lee Darr > Charles Edward Pack > Me) and I have been researching him for many years. I believe you sent me the following information, which I found quite helpful and I'm posting here so that others may be able to help us along:

Chuck, I am going to let you know what I have found. Then you can take it from there.

1880, Chariton County, Clark Township, Missouri. Charles W. Dor age 12, born Missouri. Brother James H. Dor age 18, born Missouri. Their Mother is a widow, her name was Catherine, born 1842 in Missouri.

All my experience, census takers have either, Dar, Darr, Dor, Dorr. Ancestry.com has copied it as Dorr. Now, if you live in the South, and my daughter-in-law backs me on this, because she has been called Dyer. But her name was Darr.

If you go to 1900, Madison County, Boston Township, Arkansas. You will find Charley Dyer and just below him is Lula Mae Dyer and her brother Willie J. Dyer. Both born in Missouri. Charles is listed as being born June 1870 in Missouri. However this information could have been given to the census taker by the people he lived with.

Now, there is a W.L. Darr who was a Land Owner in Chariton County, Missouri 1876. I think this is Charles father. I also believe this Catherine is his mother.

1910 they are in Franklin County. 1920 Crawford County, 1930 Crawford County. If you go to Ancestry.com, Military, World War I and II. You will find William Jackson Mckinley Darr who registered for the draft whose father was Charles Darr, Crawford County, Arkansas. William says he was born January 15, 1895 and 1897. The 1900 census in Madison county also says he was born January. This Charles Dyer and Lula Mae and William is Charles and his kids.

Now, here is what we found out from a very distant relative. Charles was married to a Indian woman. One time after the children were born, they were assaulted and the guy was making fun of Charles wife and shoving her. The guy killed her and then Charles killed the man. He was exonerated for self-defense.

Dan George says Charlie was married January 30, 1891 in Christian County, Missouri to Delilah A. Wright. Her father was George W. Wright and her mother was Susan? Delilah was born 1870 in Camden County, Missouri.

Before I forget, William Jackson Mckinley Darr, born January 15, 1895 was born Springfield, Green County, Missour. I think Springfield is where this killing took place.

Oh, another thing, I didn't know about this Nettie Darr.

In 1880, Charles also had two sisters, Nanna age 5 and Nella age 1. So could this Nettie have been Charles sister? Pat Robbins (March 22, 2011)
Third Roscoe Darr family reunion in the past decade took place in June of this year. It was another great success. Turnout was lighter than usual, but it gave us all an opportunity to spend more time visiting and getting to know one another. The main part of the reunion was at the home of Henry and Elizabeth Darr, Roscoe's parents.

We are now on a project to create a four generation poster, beginning with Roscoe and Elizabeth. We hope to have it completed by the end of August.

Since my last posting, I have also identified a possible link to other male Darrs descended from Adam Darr, Roscoe's grandather. These distant cousins come from John Darr, Henry's brother. I will work on this and hopefully prove the link by the end of this year.

Still eager to hear anything on a possible link to Matthew Matthias Darr, and to the other PA Darrs listed in this thread.

George W. Darr

Darr information I have found. George W. Darr married 1854 Maria Jean Wade, maiden name Quin. She was a widow. She died 1866 in Fayette County, Iowa. He remarried after Maria death. He is shown on 1870 Census in Salisbury, Chariton County, Missouri with his new wife. Her name was Mary J. ??, born 1849 in Pennsylvania. This was NOT Maria Jean Wade. The children with him are either Wades or Darrs. He and Mary J had a son born 1869 his name was Oscar. I guess he died as a child because he is not on the next census, 1880 they are in Montour County, Pennsylvania. George died there 1883. If anyone can tell me if this new wife was Mary J. Marquese, probably maiden name. I sure could use some help. Thank you, Pat

My 7 great grandparents were Jacob and Mary Ann Rex Juday. They had a total of nine children, one by the name of Nancy. Her brother Franklin would be my 8 great grandfather (which I also have photos). If you have/or would like any information on these Juday's I would be willing to exchange what I have with you. I read that you have a photo of Mary Ann Rex, I would love a copy of it, if I could.
I don't know much about John & Henry Juday only that I show them being brothers and their parents were John & Susannah Rookstool Juday.
From Family Search, Kimmel Darr appears in the 1880 Census as the son of Micheal & Maryland Darr. Several brothers & sisters listed, also. Michael was a miller. Looking in Ancestry, Kimmel & family info is nicely tracked in the Public Tree- Darr Family. If Kimmel was married to Gertrude J. Rutter & he died 11/25/1939 in Altoona,PA- this is your line. Hope it helps.

Hi Steve - This is a true breakthrough, very exciting.

My grgrgr grandfather, Gottlieb Adam Darr, was known as "Adam Darr". I believe his cemetery marking says "G Adam Darr." He and his wife Christina Kolb Darr were about 30 when they immigrated to the US (1830). At the time they had one daughter, Catherina, while one or two had died in Germany, and one died en route to the US. As soon as they arrived, they settled briefly in Huntingdon, where my grgrgrandfather, Henry, was born, ca 1832. They had other children born in the US.

Let me take a backstep now, for some critical info. Adam's father, Gottlieb Adam Durr Sr., came over at the same time. But Sr wound up in Buffalo, ultimately settling in Winnebago County, Wisconsin. Jr was the oldest son, from a prior marriage, his mother having died in Germany, ca 1815. Several of Jr's full siblings died in Germany, two apparently on or about the same date as their mother. There was either some tragedy, or perhaps an epidemic (Wurttemberg).

Jr's younger full siblings came over, and while I cannot remember the names at this time, they including a John Durr who went on to Winnebago County. He was, I think, something like 18 or younger, while another sister or two also accompanied Sr to Wisconsin.

Note the different spellings: Durr for Sr, Darr for Jr.

I have corroborated that these two were father and son, through a myriad of sources, all that agreed. I came upon a hurdle once, when a couple very prolific researchers of the Durr side of the family (children of Gottlieb Sr's second wife), doubted my claims since they had never heard of any surviving children from the first marriage, that came over. In addition to that, my grgrgrandfather Henry is quite hidden in the official records, due to his age and time periods that he migrated west (to Illinois), missing one of the censuses. For a short period, the chroniclers of Gottlieb Adam Junior questioned my claims, as they were not sure there was a son named Henry.

But there again, various sources, from Westmoreland County histories, to censuses, to Jo Daviess County histories (Illinois) eventually all came together to forge the links.

So now we all are certain that my Henry Darr family belongs both in the Adam Darr, and Gottlieb Durr families.

My theory is just as you said. Adam Jr, being the oldest son, and perhaps not quite as connected to the others, because he was almost grown when his mother died, charted his own course. When I see a George Darr buried next to him in the West Newton cemetery, several years Adam's senior, it makes me wonder if George was an uncle, or cousin, that came over years before, taking the Darr spelling, which is why Adam went with that spelling.

There may have been other Wurttemberg relatives that came along with the first wave of Darrs, which might have included Adam's mother's family (Eisenbraun), or maybe his wife's family (Kolb). So if you come across either of these names, we have a compelling match.

Now, to Adam's children:

His oldest son, Henry, is my ancestor, moved to Jo Daviess County Illinois as a young man (to where some of Gottlieb Sr's children had already migrated, due to railroad expansion - thus another connection).

Adam's daughter Catherine Darr Obley, and son John Darr, also moved west, spending some time in Illinois, before settling in Kansas as farmers.

Adam's younger group of kids stayed in Pennsylvania:

Lucinda, the youngest, also married an Obley and her family wound up in PA, MO, and IL.

Son Daniel never married, and was the last occupant of the family home, dying in the 1930s.

Daughter Mary never married.

Son Adam T., stayed in Westmoreland County, and became a rather successful businessman and politician. But so far, no record at all, as to whether or not he had any children, although he was married.

So that's a very short thumbnail of what I have, with only a little bit of speculation.

Looking forward to staying in touch with you!! Your information can explain to me and my family, why we spell our name "Darr" and not "Durr"!

Gordon.Darr@gmail.com

Hello Gordon:
I am a direct descendant from George Darr in West Moreland County. He was born there in late 1700's and was baptised as Johannes George Darr. He never used the "Johannes" first name again. He had 3 female siblings. He is the son of Michael Darr and CatherineDarr. You can find them in the US census of 1790 as Mikel(Michael) and Katarina (Catherine. You can find them in all the US census up until about 1850 at the times of their deaths. They lived in Rostraver township which is very close to West Newton. Family legend believes that my Michael came West Moreland County from Wurrtemburg, Germany prior to the Revolutionary War which began in 1775. Michael purchased a ton of acreage along the Youghiogheny River (a part of Monongahela River) about 1783. He is on the tax rolls for Rostraver township about that time. Rostraver township is also referred to Van Meter in alot of references. This is the post office name. Original American Indian name for that geographic area in West Moreland County was called Mississinewa. This pops up in old land records from the 1700's when you are researching that of West Moreland. My family lived on this land for over 100 years when is was later sold to a few coal mining development companies in the late 1890's. This site was the site of the fatal Darr Mine Explosion 100 years ago that killed many many coal miners. After reading your posts, I have a hunch that my Darrs may be the reason why your Gotleib migrated to that area. I am sensing a very strong connection. I am sensing that Gotleib and MY George Darr could have been first cousins. Unfortunately your George who is buried next to your Adam is NOT my George, but I may be able to find out who's George he is. How old was Gotleib when He came to America? Perhaps it was to see his Uncle, My Michael? Question - Was your Adam Darr also known as Adam T. Darr? I may be able to look in some old field notes to see if I can find a link to who the George belongs to who is laying next to your Adam. Long before the internet, I traveled to most of the local cemeteries & the courthouses up there and copied most anything "Darr" related I could find. I have a file full of notes and copied papers. Allow me to take a peek in them. Hope this will open another door. Our family always believed that my Michael came from Wurrtenburg. Sounds like you have proved that your Gotlieb has. There is a connection I am sure. Thanks for your post, Gordon. I have been working on our Darr family history for over 30 years since I was a senior in high school. My name is Steve Sika and I live in the Tampa Bay area in Florida. Feel free to email me @ grady24@aol.com anytime. Steve

Samuel's father was John Darr. The others you mentioned are all on my family tree: John > Samuel > Jesse > John Marcus. Samuel had two families. His first was with his unknown wife and his second was with Penelope. His first wife died c1830.

Thank you for your interest. I have found Samuel's father and Jesse's grandfather. My Darrs were from Wythe and Russell Co., but I have run across your Darrs many times. To the best of my knowledge, the two families were not connected. Carol Hines

Samuel Darr, Sr.'s father was John Darr. One of Samuel's brothers was George of Russell Co. I found some indentures in Wythe Co. that prove the connection. Carol Hines
