Son of William Bailie and Ann Harrigain), of whom I am directly related to.
If anyone could help that would be great.
I'm doing this for a school project and need some help finding info.

From the 1861 Scotland census, living with "my" George Darroch at 88 Sth. portland St. Glasgow was an Agnes Robertson, nee Darroch, and says sister to George aged 40 which makes her born about 1821[if she gave correct age] in Neilston Renfreshire. Also a neice is living with them...Joanna Ritchie, aged 24 and born in Saltcoats Ayrshire. Obviously they moved around a lot for work reasons because all the rest of Georges family were born in Ireland. Anne

No, I do not have the parents of Daniel Docherty (m Rose Br(o)adley), but bear in mind that the Dan in question had a daughter, Nancy, around 1799, so was a generation or two back from yout George Darragh.
Hi, I have finally found George Darragh/Darroch,s death on SP,12 years younger than what he had given for 1861 census.
He died 1871 aged 46. But more importantly I have his parents names, which were PATRICK DARRAGH and HELEN HUTCHESON. They were living at 45 Sth.Coburg St. Glasgow.

So, George Darragh, above married Catherine Broadley, his brother Thomas married Susan Broadley and you have Daniel Darragh marrying Rose Broadley.
Do you know Daniels parents?
Still searching.
Sorry, I got that mixed up. My Crichton Darrgh/Darroch did in fact have a sister Agnes. She was living with him in 1861 Glasgow census, but gives her age as 40 [born 1821] and married name is Robertson, so obviously is not the same Agnes.
Regards Anne

Cheers. Looking forward in hope.

Just to be clear though:

Agnes/Nancy Darragh/Darroch did not marry a Broadley/Bradley.
Thanks for reply. I have not been able to find George Darragh,s death as yet, so do not know his parents names.
Am wondering if Agnes was indeed his sister , and they both married siblings.... Broadleys. As I mentioned Georges wife was Catherine Broadley
The earliest I have them is in the 1861 Glasgow census. In 1868 their son Crichton married Elizabeth Diamond in Hutchesontown stating father and mother on marriage lines. Crichton had a daughter Agnes. Will keep searching for Georges death.

Did I ever reply to this? If not, apologies. I will have a look at potential links and get back to you. The name George certainly crops up in the Darragh/Docherty descendancy, so may hark back to a brother/uncle in an early generation. A question in my mind is whether Nancy/Agnes was the sister of your George. Since you contacted me, I have established that two of her siblings were Lawrence and William. I do not know if she had others. Have you established George's parentage from his death certificate in Scotland? Was it Daniel Darragh and Rose Broadley - if so, there is a chance that Nancy and George were indeed siblings. Other things discovered since you contacted me include that John Docherty's son-in-law, Robert Hutchison, was from Garvagh, Errigal parish, south of Coleraine, Co. Londonderry, Ireland. This does not of course mean that the Dochertys or the Darraghs were from the same neck of the woods, but it is worth knowing and filing away anyhow.

Darragh - NYC
In my research, I obtained a list of family members interred in the family plot at Green-wood cemetery in Brooklyn, NY. Between 1861 and 1995, 32 people are listed, with last names of Darragh (Darrow/Derragh), Kinkaid, Caterson (Coterson), McCready and Rodgers. I've traced my linage back 6 generations, but there are still a lot of people I can fit into the tree. Maybe someone out there can help us fill in the blanks?

Thanks.

More than ten years after you posted it I notice the mention of a Rebecca Darragh. That was my great grandmother's name. She was born in 1838, probably in Co. Monaghan. Her parents were, however, Henry Darragh (soldier) and Hannah McNab.

After she married James McKenna she lived in Belfast before the family emigrated to Scotland

Any chance that your Alexander would have had a brother Henry.

Thanks

Liam Ferrie

hi there just came accross your post on a google search. i read somewhere about darragh becoming the scottish name darroch and have a john docherty and agnes darroch in my tree, like yourself i am stuck with their parents. i have the death certs for both and the second marriage cert for john docherty. i have them on the 1841 census and 1851,1861 and just john on the 1871 census after agnes death. i got to them through their son daniel docherty who was also born in ireland and married jessie campbell in glasgow. I was wondering if you have any info on their children as i have names on the 41,51,61 census but there are a few agnes and john dochertys around and am never 100% i have the right people. like i say daniel docherty ~(dougherty) is on my line and i have him living with john his father in 1871 but can't trace his death for the life of me which makes me think he may have left scotland after 1871 as no trace of him although on his wife jessies death in 1897 she is listed as being married to him and he is listed as dead on his daughter jessies death cert 1912. so somewhere between 1897 and 1912 he died i believe. siblings i have are john, james, george, rosan, sarah and daniel living with john and agnes in 1841 if that is right which it may not be.

thanks for any help sorry about the long winded comment!

david gray

Chasing birthplace of Nancy Darragh, b Abt 1799, Ireland, who married John Docherty, b Abt 1799, Ireland. Changed named to Agnes Darroch after moving to Scotland, probably between 1841 (not in Scottish census) and 1851 (now in Scottish census. Nancy's parents were Daniel Darragh and Rose Broadley (I think the surname is right, but it may be slightly different). Would also appreciate more on John Docherty, parents John Docherty, a sailor, and Susan Cochran. Have much more information on descendancy of Nancy and John. Assume that Nancy's name in Ireland could have been Ann Darragh.

We have just discovered an ancestor Nancy Darragh, b Abt 1799 Ireland to father John Darragh, a sailor, and Rose Broadley (though this last surname may be slightly different). Nancy married a John Docherty and they had children including Rose (b1821) and Daniel (b Abt 1832) in Ireland. Nancy and her family emigrated to Scotland and wound up in Paisley, Renfrewshire. Nancy 'Scottishized' her name to Agnes Darroch, a not uncommon thing in those days on Anti-Catholic feeling. She died in 1865. In 1861, the census showed she and John had two lodgers staying - Lawrence Darragh and John Darragh, possibly a link with Nancy's family.

Anyhow, if you can advise on how we might pursue our Darragh researches in Ireland, we would be very grateful. By all means send this to other Darragh researchers.

Elspeth from Scotland

Anyone descended from Darragh family of Preble & Warren Counties, Ohio?

Memoirs of the Miami Valley, Vol III, Robert O. Law Company, 1919, pg 67:
Ralph W. Darragh [contains bio info on Ralph's great-great-great grandfather, John O'Darragh]
"From the days of the earliest pale face settlement in the Miami valley, one of the families that is now numerous in several counties has made its home here, its members for the greater part having been, as today, connected with agricultural pursuits. However, those bearing the name of Darragh have had a good representation in other lines of industry, in the professions, and in public office, and at all times, and in all avenues, have rendered a splendid account of themselves from the days of John O'Darragh, the pioneer progenitor, to the present, when Ralph W. Darragh is found actively engaged in farming operations in the northwest part of Warren county, not far from Franklin. John O'Darragh, the great-great-great-grand father of Ralph W. Darragh, was an Irishman by birth and possessed all the courage, wandering foot and love of adventure of his race. He sought and secured an appointment as an agent for the English government in America, and upon his arrival in this country took up his home in a little log cabin situated on what is now known as the state dam, north of Middletown, on Big Miami river, it being at the time the only building in this locality. Warren county at that time knew few white settlers; Dayton was an Indian village, and Cincinnati boasted of few cabins. In this wild and uncivilized locality, Mr. O'Darragh and his partner hunted and fished during the winter months, taking their chances with the Indians, with whom they made friends where possible, and whom they fought when it was not possible to establish amicable relations. At high water, these hardy men would build a raft, on which their furs and other goods were loaded, float it down the river to the Ohio and thence to the Mississippi and thus continue on their way to New Orleans, where their goods were sold and their raft disposed of. After submitting their report to the English government, they would return to the Miami valley, reaching here in time for another winter's catch. John O'Darragh kept up this life in Warren county and other parts of the Miami valley for thirty years and became widely known and famous as a mighty hunter. Some of his reports, written by himself in the original Gaelic, are cherished keepsakes of several of his descendants. He had a large family, and later the members thereof dropped the O' and adopted the style of Darragh."

Manaia,

It's A HIT!! Yes, this is the same person...my ggg grandfather, William Darragh. I have his death cert but did not know that he had a brother until your post! Thanks! His son, Robert Leach Darragh became wealthy building in New York City and employed my g grandfather(Fred Robert Usher) as a mason. Looking in Sparrowbush(Orange Cty., NY), which is listed as the place of death, I see two roads with the name "Darraugh"(SIC) in them. I now have another avenue to search!
