new book - The Diary of a Southern Lady-Georgina Francis Barrett Devlin

I have just self-published the diary that my great, great grandmother kept from 1852 to 1912. By far the greatest amount of that time she was in Yazoo County and Yazoo City. There are countless persons mentioned, but the closest ones are Barrett, Devlin, Gilruth, Levy, Darrington, McFarland, Stinson.

Her granddaughter married Dr. John Darrinton in Yazoo City. There are frequent references to him and to his family.

It is available at www.Createspace.com/3546438, or on Amazon, or from me directly at wjones146@comcast.net.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Darrington in Australia and U.S.A

Hi, I am looking for anything on my great-grandfather Lennox Arthur Darrington (a.k.a Warrington) (His records only start showing up from the time of wedding in 1906 in South Australia. He married Sarah Amelia Francis. His death record lists his father's name as August and his mother's maiden name as Strahan. It says he was born in Gumerancha Sth Australia in 1880, but I doubt both as I remember relatives arguing over it. I also heard he had a brother (possibly named Robert who moved to live in U.S.A or Canada, not sure of time). I also heard that Lennox was a singer and dancer who performed in Darwin prior to his marriage. Is there anyone out there with any connections or ideas where I can find some links?

OK, I think I've got it now. Mother Mary Ann (at age 29) AND Daughter Mary Ann (at age 2 - I have DOB as 1846) both died in 1848.
I also have a Son, John b.1845 but he's not on 1851 census. (No record of death before the 1851 census I can find). Any thoughts on this John?

Yes, I believe you have the right marriage. It looks as though there was only one surviving child from the first marriage i.e. Jabez Hawkins junior. The death records indicate that there were two Mary Ann Hawkins deaths registered in Bedford in 1st quarter 1848. Almost certainly I would say that this is the mother and her newly born daughter. The second Mary Ann Hawkins I believe lived until 1908, whereas Jabez died in 1898.
Filled in 1 of the blanks. In the 1861 census Jabez and Mary Ann #2 are living with their 5 kids in Bolnhurst. There is also an Elizabeth Adams "Mother" there. So that solves who Mary Ann #2 is. An Adams.
But a strange thing: the other Mary Ann option I had was a Mary Ann Mayes. On the 1861 sheet they have a servant, Ann Mayes age 15, b.1846. Coincidence?
Typical - for every answer you find, you wind up with at least 1 or 2 more questions!
Since I first wrote that request for help have filled in a few blanks. Jabez did marry a Mary Anne Darrington in 1845. There is a death record for a Mary Darrington reg. Mar 1847 in Bedford. Jabez remarried reg.1850 to either a Mary Ann Mayes or a Mary ann Adams. So that prompts the question who is Jabez Jr's Mother (his birth was reg. Q4 1847)? Quite likely the second Mary Ann (before she married)?
So you are quite right the only solution to figuring out who's who is ordering certificates. The first Jabez marriage to find out the Parents of the first Mary Ann. The second marriage to find out which Mary Ann he married. And Jabez Jr's birth record to confirm who his Mother was.
Thanks all for your help.
Stephen

Stephen,
I agree with you, there appears to be a mismatch. However, I believe that we can safely assume that the John Darrington in the 1851 and 1861 censuses (both in which Kezia Darrington is stated as being the grand-daughter)is linked with the Mary Ann Darrington that married Jabez Hawkins, since the son of Jabez and Mary Ann Hawkins (and also named Jabez) is also living with John Darrington in the 1861 census. In the 1841 census there are spelling mistakes in the name Kezia. I suggest that you order a copy of the marriage certificate for Jabez Hawkins and Mary Ann Darrington in 1845, which you can obtain via findmypast.com costing £7.00 (if ordered on line in UK). May be worth ordering a copy also of Jabez Hawkin's birth certificate in 1847 (quarter 4, Bedford, volume 6, page 41). Hope this helps.
Good luck with your research,
Derick.

July 10,2009

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing in the hope that there may be someone out there who can help me with finding information on early settlers in Bonesteel. Any direction to resources would be extremely appreciated. The people we are researching are:

Israel Nordike Powell
his wife ..Mary Leona (Molly) Myers Powell,
their children:
Garnettie (Nettie) Powell
Elizabeth (Lizzie)Powell Willoughby
Gladys Powell Willoughby Hicks
Dike Charles Powell
Eva Mae Powell Jones

We understand they were some of the earliest settlers there and that some of their land eventually became part of the town of Bonesteel and that a piece of their land was also used for the county fairgrounds. We believe they arrived there sometime between 1883 and 1886 from Council Bluffs Iowa or possibly from Springview Nebraska. If you could put us in contact with anyone who could give us any information and history we would greatly appreciate it.

Some of the other names we would be interested in are

John Henry Powell
Eleanor Gilson Powell
William Henry Powell
Jane Elizabeth Lane Powell
Vera Powell Burbridge
Mary Elizabeth Powell Saul
Nancy Jane Powell Welbourn
Ruth Cecelia Welbourrn
Don Ryan
Joyce Saul Veal
or any relatives of the people listed above.

Please contact me, Marilyn (Moffatt) Hultgren at windyviewlady@hotmail.com or my mother Mrs. Betty (Powell) Moffatt at the address below.

Betty Moffatt
Box 165
Crawford, Nebraska 69339

1 308 665 1606
Thank you so very much for your time and attention.

Marilyn Hultgren

Darrington Family of Bedfordshire

From looking at the 1841-1861 census, it appears there were several families with this surname. I'm trying to find out more about Martha Darrington, born 1827 in Bedfordshire. There is a Martha Darrington in the IGI, baptized 1827 in Roxton. Only a mother listed, that being Mary Darrington. I don't know if this means Martha was born out of wedlock. I also found a court record on a Martha Darrington, correct age, who was found guilty of stealing shoes in 1843. She got six months hard labor.

The Martha I seek married John Crow(e) about 1852, although I've found no marriage record. Their oldest child, George Crowe, was born in 1852. The family moved twice in the 1860s, first to Herefordshire and then to Shropshire.

I found a record at the UK archives that MAY be related to Martha's mother, Mary Darrington. "EATON SOCON PARISH RECORDS: Samuel Darrington 7yrs, George 7yrs, Sarah 6yrs. Roxton, Beds. P5/13/2/89 3 Oct. 1840 // Contents: Includes: Examination of Mary Darrington, A widow, the 3 are her grandchildren, children of son William & wife Sarah. Samuel b. Roxton, Geo. & Sarah at Cambridge. Son Wm. b. Roxton did nothing to gain settlement, m. Eaton Socon church. Her own husband d. 6yrs ago. 3 Oct. 1840"

Mary Ann Darrington b.1819, Roxton or Mary Ann b.1830, Hunts.

Happy New Year!
Have a conumdrum and would appreciate your suggestion(s). I found the 1861 census sheet that shows John Darrington b.1783 living with Kezia Darrington, Grandaughter b.1835 and Grandson, Jabez Hawkins b.1848. Just the name piqued my curiosity.
Found Jabez' Dad, and family in 1861 livng in Risely, Bedford, Bedfordshire. 5 Brothers and Sisters (3 more later on) and Wife, Mary Ann. Found the marriage record for them, 1845 in Bedford. Mary Ann Darrington.
I initially assumed this Mary Ann was John Darrington's Daughter Mary Ann b.1819 in Roxton. This is where I get confused. On all the census sheets from 1851 onward Mary Ann's birthyear is constantly 1829-1831. AND it shows her birthplace as Great Shaughton, Hunts or Great Gransden, Hunts. Not Roxton.
Am I wrong in assuming this IS NOT John Darrington's Daughter but a Mary Ann Darrington from another branch?
The only other Mary Ann Darrington I have is a Daughter of Samuel Darrington b.1808 and Jane Addington. But this Mary Ann was b.1838 and there's no connection to Hunts.
Just to add more confusion to this, I have John Darrington's Daughter, Mary Ann Darrington b.1819 dying in 1848. (There's actually 2 Mary Ann Darringtons on the death record, Mother and Daughter maybe?) If this is accurate then it must be a different Mary Ann Darrington that Jabez married (becaue Jabez and Mary Ann had kids right up to 1875). Does this make sense?
Does anyone have the original marriage certificate (1845) for Mary Ann and Jabez or the actual death record for Mary Ann d.1848?
Who is this Mary Ann Darrington b.abt 1830 from Hunts?
Help, please!
Stephen MacDonald, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, bigmac1x@sympatico.ca
My great-great grandfather was Robert Darrington James and
his son Frank James. Robert Darrington was married to a Mary who was Scottish and he remarried after she died. I think the family was from Alabama. The link that is being discussed is regarding SC...so any connection?

thanks
