Melanie, it seems that there have been many spellings - D'Arcy, Darcey, Darsey, Dorsey, and even Dawsey. It would be interesting to see what the results of your brother's DNA test would be. Both of my brothers did the DNA test; and, thank goodness, their markers were the same!!!

My DArseys were in the Augusta area of Georgia at least by 1790.

Sarah

Hi there,

I can talk to my brother about a test, our last name is spelled "Darcey" and we may have origin in the county cork area, my sis and I have been trying to confirm that for quite a while. I did a trip to Wicklow a few years back and found a lot of Darcey graves with multiple spellings on the family's gravestones there. We believe our great-grandfather came over around 1875-ish, with a couple sisters.
Sincerely,
Melanie (Darcey) Shaw

It's nice to know that I am not alone in my confusion over the history of this family. I do think it's reasonable to assume that sons not left property in Maryland would have migrated to somewhere land was available--such as North Carolina.

I've only looked at Joseph and his descendants. Perhaps I should also see what I can find out about his brothers.

I know the Dorsey DNA project are trying to find someone who is a known descendant in the Calvert Co Dorsey family to participate. I can not help since my grandmother's father was a Calvert Co. DORSEY. That sort of DNA match would certainly help, since there is a large hole due to the record loss to identify who parents of Calvert Co Dorsey's born from the 1750s through early 1800s were with no court, land, or probate records for a 105 year period. There were three Dorsey/Dossey immigrants to MD in the 1600s, thought likely to be brothers. At least all three are named as kinsman to Richard Preston in the latter's will. Richard was originally a Puritan leader in MD (who came from VA) and converted to Quakerism (which was not uncommon circa 1660). An open question I found from Dorchester Co records is that James Dorsey and Mary of Calvert Co owned part of the tract of land called HORN or HORN POINT in Dorchester Co., MD and conveyed it in the 1740s. There is a gap in the chain of title to this tract of land, but it was Patented to Richard Preston who left it to his two daughters, and they and their husbands have ownership of the land shown in several conveyances. So how did James Dorsey of Calvert Co.,come into possession of this land? There are some claims that this James parents were James Dorsey and Rebecca (which is shown to be the case in the records). However they go further and state the mother was Rebecca Preston, who would have been the granddaughter of Richard Preston. The bottom line is that the ancestry of the Calvert Co Dorseys seems to be somehow tied to the family of Richard Preston. In addition to the oft mentioned will of Richard Preston there is also the ownership of the tract "Horn Point" showing a definite connection. I have not been able to trace any of these folks back to England,
Going back to Joseph, I wonder if he and his two brothers who were not left land in Calvert Co., MD by their father had left the area

Thanks for the information. It would be wonderfully convenient if James and Mary Dorsey's son Joseph was the same person as my ancestor Joseph Darsey. My Joseph was allegedly born on 24 Jan 1720, although I don't know where that comes from. (Some people show him being born in 1762, but that was his son Joseph.) Joseph the father was in North Carolina by 1740, when he was married there. He was in Georgia by 1775. He fought in the Revolution and apparently died aboard a British prison ship in Charleston Harbor in 1780 or 1781.

The Dorsey/Darsey DNA project distinguished Joseph and his descendants from Marylander Edward Dorsey. The indication is that Joseph's family, unlike Edward's, had Norman origins. However, I haven't seen anything convincing about Joseph's direct ancestors.

FWIW James Dorsey and Mary of Calvert Co., MD had a son named Joseph who is mentioned in James will of 22 Jan 1758. probated on 5 May 1761. Oddly he left land to 5 of his 8 sons, but none to Joseph, Benjamin, and William.
So far I found only one other record for a Joseph DORSEY in Calvert Co.,MD - the 1800 Federal census and all that says he was over age 45 so no way to know if that is the son of James and Mary or a later generation. However, I have seen someone claim ancestry to a Joseph Dorsey from Calvert Co., MD that died circa 1818 in Indiana. Because of a courthouse fire in 1882, Calvert Co lost most all their records - land records, wills from 1776 to 1882, etc. There were a couple of Joseph Dorseys in the descendants of Edward Dorsey in the 18th century as well. (before 1776 in Maryland wills were filled in a province (state) prerogative court so wills before 1776 exist for Calvert Co as do probate records, but 1777 to 1880s is a black hole.

Lee

Thanks for the note on your Aunt Sarah. I'll e-mail Nick.

I, too, would like to try to get all the Darseys sorted out and would be glad to send you all the information which I have. I;m sure that "my" Joseph is connected with all the rest who seem to have apread out from Columbia County, GA, but I have been unable to find that connection.

My brothers did the DNA testing, and the only Darsey who showed up with a 37 marker, one down, was a Julian Darsey in Texas. I understand that his family went there from Georgia MANY years ago.

Sarah

Responding to your 4:07 a.m. post: I am sure my aunt Sarah Nicholson Adams knows where that bible is, but at last report she was in the hospital in Bainbridge (doing all right, however). I'll see what I can find out.

There is so much confusion on ancestry.com about certain Darsey facts. Of course, using the same names in every generation, and never quite agreeing on "Darsey-Dorsey-Darcey-Darcy-Dossey," didn't help either. I'm thinking that I should make a list of all the Darseys included in the Georgia and Florida census records and see where that leads me. Also, all Darseys listed in Georgia and Florida cemeteries on findagrave.com. Do you think there were any Darseys in Georgia who weren't descended from the Joseph who died around 1781?

Right, and we'll be meeting again at the reunion that my cousin Nick Adams is supposed to be planning for the near future.

I figured you weren't looking for Joseph I (died 1781 or so), but thought you might be looking for his son Joseph, who I thought was the Columbia County one. After I answered, though, I did more on-line research and saw in the Darsey DNA Project report that it's not certain from the historical records that the Columbia County Joseph was the son of Joseph I. On the other hand, the DNA evidence seems to have them pretty closely related--one variation, which could be--well, I can't think of the word, but a one-generation aberration.

Maybe you can answer a question that Nick hasn't been able to answer. The Darsey reunion we go to--what defines the participants? Are they descendants of Joel? Or just of his son John? Or just of HIS son Joseph Hutto? I have the last list of participants, but I can't tell who most of them are or how they are connected to me.

This is the Joseph Darsey who was the son of Joseph Darsey (1720-1780 or 1781) and the brother of my ancestor Joel Darsey (1765-1850). Ancestry.com shows his date of death as 21 Jun 1823, apparently based on Columbia County probate records. I've only come up with 10 children, but it would not surprise me if there were three more.

St. Paul's Parish became Richmond County in 1777. Columbia County was formed from the northern half of Richmond County in 1790.

Various contributors to Ancestry.com show George Darsey as a son of the older Joseph. Some show this child as "William." He was born 1745; everyone shows his place of birth as Washington County, but I think his father was still in North Carolina at that time. He is shown as dying on 4 Mar 1784 in Washington County. There is no other information about him. I have not run accross an Edmond or Madison Darsey/Dorsey.

The Joseph Darsey (has been spelled Dorsey) in whom I am interested was married in St. Paul's Parrish, and I have seen a plat of land showing him as owner in Richmond County in 1824. I'm not sure when part of Richmond may have become Columbia. I cannot find any information on "my" Joseph as respects parents, siblings, other relatives, but I strongly suspect that he has kinship with some of the Darseys who were in Columbia County at the time. I would like to know what information you have, especially on Madison or Edward. Do you know anything about a George Darsey?

Sarah, there is a "Dorsey DNA Project" which was trying to tie together the various Dorsey/Darsey/Dossey, etc., families. The project is described at http://www.contexo.info/DorseyDNA/; results to date are summarized at http://www.contexo.info/DorseyDNA/Results.htm. At least one person from the Joseph Darsey Sr. line has participated, with the results I mentioned previously. I don't know who it was. My immediate family group doesn't qualify for testing since we are descended through a Darsey daughter (Julia Ellen Darsey Nicholson, from Joseph Hutto Darsey, John Darsey, and Joel Darsey.)

Thanks for the info, Sarah. At the last of our Darsey reunions I was chosen to be family secretary. Then my father, who had been tracing the family history (including my mother's families) passed away, and I have taken that job on myself. Rather stupidly, I decided to start with Joseph Darsey Sr., and come forward, which has turned it into a monstrously large project. Of course, Ancestry.com tries to hide information on living persons, so I'm not really learning much about my current relatives.

I have run across any number of problems with prior genealogies done on Ancestry.com. A lot of people have confused Joseph Sr. (born 1720) with Joseph Jr. (born 1762). Early on I learned not to rely on a census record without reviewing the actual record and noting the race; an awful lot of white Darseys have been assigned death dates, etc., based on those of black Darseys. (Although you may be interested to know that the rock pioneer Bo Diddley is on the Darsey family tree, having been married for 20 years to a descendant of Benjamin and Leodicy.)

I would very much appreciate the information you have on Joel and his wife/wives. The wives in particular are a mystery to me.

Rnning out of room, I'll respond separately on the DNA issue.

I have a copy of the marriage record for Joseph and Ann Chance, and it is 1816. When you search the Georgia marriage records on some sites,, he is shown as Joseph DAWSEY.

I think the Joseph Darsey who was born about 1806 was the son of Joseph Darsey and Mary Bowdre per the Bible records(can't remember the name of the person who published a book).

Page 185
JOSEPH DARSEY BIBLE
Owner: Mrs. Alex Carswell
1423 Olive Street
Santa Barbara, CA (1965)

Marriages:

Joseph Darsey, born 11/24/1762
Mary Darsey, wife of Joseph Darsey, born 2/2/1772

Joseph and Mary Bowdre Darsey were married 10/13/1791

Nancy Darsey to Marcus?
Tom, I met you at the Darsey reunion in Attapulgas a couple of years ago. My first contact with the Bainbridge area Darseys was through your father who had me contact Sarah Adams.

I had been in contact with a Joseph (evidently still a popular name with the Darseys!) Darsey in Texas who had done the DNA and urged me to get one of my brothers to participate. He had found connections to several Darseys, including Steven Darsey in Atlanta. He went through the Family Tree Maker DNA program.

I got a good offer on the test from Ancestry so had Leonard participate. There were no close matches for him with anyone, and there were no Darseys(Dorseys) on the list. Since he was the only one of us who had been born in the hospital,I began to wonder if they sent home the wrong baby!!! So then I got Francis to do the test with Family Tree Maker. Again, he and Leonard were exact matches, and the only other Darsey matched them on 35 of the 37 markers. This was a Julian Darsey in Texas. His nephew was the contact name, and I did get one or two e-mails from him. He said that branch of the family had moved to Texas MANY years before, and that they had come from south Georgia.

As I may have told you when we met, "my" Joseph was born in Georgia in 1790. The Joseph who was a brother of Joel had a daughter, born in 1794(?) who was named Fetney, and "my" Joseph named one of his daughetrs, born in 1824, Fetney Caroline. Since Fetney is not the most common of names, I wonder if "my" Joseph and the first Fetney were no cousins.

I have some records on Joel which I got at the courthouse on Augusta, and I suspect that there could have possibly been two Joels. One of the records indicates that "Joel's" wife was committed to an asylum

If anyone in your line ever does participate in the DNA testing, I would like to know the results. I do know that a DOrsey in south Georgia had exact matches with a couple of DArseys.

Sarah

Somewhere on the Internet I have seen the results of the Darsey, etc.,DNA Project. Apparently at least one descendant of Joseph Darsey (father of Joel Darsey) participated. The results were ironic. There was a line of Dorseys in Maryland which has always taken great pride in being descended from the Normans who came over with William the Conqueror. The DNA testing did not bear this out. There was a second line of Maryland Dorseys which has historically been more humble. From this second line, the Georgia Darseys emerged--including Joseph and his children, such as Joel. The DNA markers for the second confirm their Norman heritage.

I have seen genealogies for the Georgia Darseys which take them back to William, but I don't believe them.

Dede, both my brothers have done DNA testing, one with Ancestry and one with Family Tree make. The only thing that we confirmed is that they both have the same markers!

I did learn that there was a Julius/Julian Darsey in Texas whose markers matched my brothers 35 of 37. I understand that his family went to Texas many years ago from Georgia which is where my Darseys were in 1790.

Have you ever been in contact with Herschell Darsey in Albany, GA? He is descended from the Joel Darsey line.

However, there may have been more than one Joel Darsey as there are more than one Joseph Darsey. Somewhere I have a document copy from the archives in Richmond County, GA in which a wife of a Joel Darsey was declared incompetent.

I also have a copy of a marriage bond signed by a James B. Robinson for Joel Darsey. He was the neighbor of my Joseph Darsey and deeded 43 head of cattle to my Joseph's wife, Ann, in 1825. This also was in Richmond County, GA.

Sarah Darsey Avary

Information I have shows that a Joseph Darsey married a Mary Bowdre on Oct. 13, 1791, and they had a daughter named Fetney Darsey born July 6, 1796.

The Joseph Darsey (born in 1790) for whom I'm searching did marry Ann Chance on Sept. 16, 1816. They had a daughter named "Fetney" Caroline Darsey who was born in 1826 (the family Bible does not give a more specific date).

Since "Fetney" is a most unusual name,I feel that there has to be a connection between the two Josephs, but I have not been able to locate it. As I was once told by a descendant of the Joseph Darsey/Mary Bowdre line, "the Darseys had no imagination when it came to naming children".

My brothers have done DNA testing, but it did not produce any results.

The Mormons show a Joseph Bowdre Darsey (1806-1830, son of Mary Bowdre and Joseph Darsey (son of the prison ship Joseph Darsey). Here is the url:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/PRF/individual_record...

This shows Joseph Bowdre Darsey as marrying Ann Chance, without the date. The Georgia marriage records show a "Joseph Darsey" marrying Ann Chance in 1816. It's not likely that she married a 10-year-old. Either she married a different Joseph Darsey or the birth date is wrong.

The diverse spellings (Darsey, Dorsey, Dossey, Darcy, etc.) make this research challenging. I'm part of a group of Darseys descended from Joel (1765-1850). We have periodic reunions in Decatur County, Georgia, where Joel came in 1823 or so from Jefferson Co.

I can certainly understand your frustration!! Have you ever contacted any of the Darseys from the Darsey reunion in Dexter, GA? They are descended from some of the prison ship's Joseph Darsey. The first time I went, someone told me that the Darseys had no imagination when it came to naming sons..... too many Josephs, Joels, Benjamins, and Jameses.

My husband's family had a reunion in Richomnd, VA several years ago, and we "toured" some historical sites while we were there. In the Hollywood Cemetery, there is a Benjamin F. Darsey who is buried. He has no tombstone, but the cemetery records list the row and site in which he is buried.

I have a copy of my great-great grandfather's will which was probated in Coosa County, AL in 1858, and it mentions a Benjamin F. Darsey, identified as a minor; and, as no parentage is given, I presume that he is one of Joseph's children, and not a grandchild.

Hope I can attach something from the "List of accounts" my great-grandfather left when he enlisted in the Civil War.
1 Note on B. F. Darsey for $173 Dollars payable one day after date dated December 26 1859).

1 Note on B. F. Darsey dated November 16th 1859 and due the first day of Jan 1861).

1 Note on B. F. Darsey for $173 Dollars payable one day after date dated December 26 1859).

Apparently there may have been more than one Benjamin F. Darsey, and I do not find this one in my great-great grandfather's Bible nor in my granfather's Bible.

From the date of his migration, I think you are correct in that "your" Benjamin was the son of the Joseph who died on the prison ship.

You said that your dad had done the DNA testing. I got Both of my brothers to participate, one with Ancestry and one with Family Tree Maker. They matched in all 37 markers, but the closest person I found was in Texas, and I believe that he had a 35 marker match with them.

If you would want to give me your e-mail address, I have some attachments in which you might be interested.

Sarah saraha@brmemc.net

I have found a Joseph Dorsey who married Mary Bowdre on 11 Oct 1791 in Columbia County, GA. Columbia County was formed on 17 Dec 1790 from Richmond County. If your Joseph's birth date is an estimate, these could be his parents. I found this record in "37,000 Early Georgia Marriages" by Joseph T. Maddox and Mary Carter, published in 1975, p. 31.

I am currently researching all the Darsey/Dorsey's in Georgia to determine the parents of my 4g grandfather, Benjamin Darsey, who migrated to the Mississippi Territory (Natchez area) before 1800. He was married to Nancy (maybe Cowper?) and had three sons, Silas, Joab, and Henry.

There are several Benjamin Darsey/Dorsey's in Georgia, but I can't make the connection. I'm reasonably sure that he is probably a grandson of Joseph Darsey, who died on a prison ship in Charleston during the Revolutionary War, based on my dad's DNA results.
I have to agree this is a strange post. I checked with the company that handled the cremation. They have no clue as to any living relatives. The info on the death certificate was, evidently, provided by my father who knew & assumed bits & pieces about Hugh. I believe some of the info is wrong. It has been suggested that the mothers maiden name was Showers not Sheva. I believe Hugh was estranged from his family. They may not know he is deceased. He died at 58 yrs. old. He would have been about seventy yrs. old now had he lived, so there's still a chance somebody would recognize him and know his family.
Some details I believe to be true:
Hugh's father is James Henry Darsey or Dorsey born 1894 in GA, a farmer living in Fla. His parents were born in GA.
Mother was Bertha born 1906 in GA. Her parents were born in GA.
A 1930 census says they had a daughter named Willie J born in FLA, 1926.
Hopefully, someone will connect.
Thank you so much.

This is one of the strangest postings I have ever seen but am glad you are trying to find a resting place for James. I am related to a number of Darsey's from Georgia but don't find a connection to this one. James' parents are buried in Alamo Memorial Gardens
Alamo
Wheeler County
Georgia, USA
Plot: Section L

Maybe if you contact the cemetery they can direct you to the funeral home that handled the cremation and then to the relatives. Maybe someone would scatter his cremains with his parents or bury them there. Sorry I couldn't help more. C J Smith

I have been trying to find my connection with other Darseys, but have been unable to do so. I was interested in your information as my Darseys have been in Florida since about 1904, but I do not know anything about James Hugh Darsey. If you do find any relatives, and they are willing to share information, I would appreciate an e-mail at saraha@brmemc.net.

Thank you.

I have James Hugh Darsey or Dorsey's ashes. I would like to find living relatives who might want to take Hugh's remains. I never met the man. His ashes were given to me from my deceased fathers estate. His death certificate states he was b. Aug. 12, 1938 Dublin, Georgia, d. Jan. 28, 1998. He lived & died in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. He was in the construction business. His father was james Henry Darcey or Dorsey. His mother was Willie Bertha ?. He may have had a sister living Atlanta, Georgia.
If you are interested in having his remains, please contact deesimon@mac.com.
Also, amongst the items were two pictures that I believe are of Hugh.

Darsey in Georgia

I am looking for the "Mary" or "Jane" or "Clemantine" Darsey who married Thomas Jefferson Horne 24 Apr 1858 in Laurens County, Georgia. I have found, on the 1860 Laurens County Census, a Jane and a Clemantine with William H. and Malinda Darsey as parents. Jane would fit the right age. In my search I have found each name separate, combinations of 2 names and combination of all 3 names. Would really appreciate any and all help. Thanks.

Hi Sean,
Saw your 2000 entry. My ancestors came from co Tipperary 1848. I believe that the family was in that county for the previous 50 years +.
Your ancestors are from Galway, is that correct?

I was wondering if you have ever had a DNA check and/or willing to take part. A Family Tree DNA group is attempting to find out if all Darcy's/D'Arcy's/Darceys/Dorceys/ etc.. are connected or have a common ancestor. I had one done a couple of years back. The group is looking for a volunteer -male Darcy descendant from Galway Darcy's to take part. Do you know of a Darcy who could participate?
Cheers
Bernie D'Arcy Aust

DNA Project Results

We have received the results of the first ten participants in our Dorsey/Darsey/Darcy/Dawsey/Dossey/D'Arcy DNA project. I have posted the results and a preliminary analysis and conclusion at http://www.contexo.info/DorseyDNA/ProjectResults.htm .

The results have tentatively defined three family groups who are not related within a genealogically significant timeframe.

We do not have any participants from the Darsey line at this time. We hope that others will be encouraged to join our study in order to confirm and further define the interconnections of Darsey families and their relationships to those with similar surnames.

Go to Your Message | Return to Message
