Is there anyone else working on Roswell Dart? Just found one of the Roswell Darts buried in Rugg-Town cemetery in Perrysburgh, New York. Born about 1737 and died Oct. 18, 1820. Wife Dorcas is with him. b. 1737 d. Feb. 25, 1822. Not to be confused with Roswell b. 1766 married to Ruth Clark. Also of interest is that he is buried in Cattaraugus county just 3 miles from Dayton where Freeman & Curtis Dart are located in the 1840 census.

The clippings are from the Cumberland, MD newspaper. Not sure of the name of it. Rose Hill Cemetery is in Cumberland, MD. Bessie's husband, William, is also buried there. The obituary says that Bessie was "born here" on March 18, 1871. So, she was born in Cumberland, MD and was a 'life long resident except for a 15 year period when Mr. Gulland was affiliated with the Bulland-Clarke Wholesale Grocery Company in Elkins, WV." So, it sounds like she got married in Cumberland as well.

Her husband came to the U.S. from Scotland in 1889 and worked in New York until he moved to Cumberland in 1891. His obituary says he died in Sykesville, MD which is 2 hours from Cumberland. I don't know what he was doing there since his obituary describes his home as being in Cumberland.

Cindy,

Do you know what paper this came out of? I see Bessie died in Sanford, FL at her daughter's home, but besides that, I have no idea where she was buried (there are a million Rose Hill Cemeteries). I'm assuming they brought her back to her home state for burial? Do you know if she is buried with her husband? And, if you know it, could you please post which city, state she was born in and married in?

Thanks so much!

My parents moved up there after they married as they knew the area and had sharecropped there. My sis was born there, too.

As far as I know, I'm not related to ANY of them. My gg-grandfather was Nimrod William DART who married 1- Mary FOSTER; 2- Mary TAYLOR. He was born in Maryland abt 1806, married in Dearborn Co, IN, in 1828. Remarried abt 1839, place unknown, and ended up in Arkansas by the 1850 census, then died abt 1871. I have no idea who his parents or siblings are - been searching 15 years. He doesn't seem to be related to anyone. The closest I've come is that he may be related to Moses DART who married Matilda OLIVER. Nimrod sold him half of his land at one point. Don't know Moses' parents, either, but best guess is Thomas D. & Rachel (Iiams /Iams) DART.

I have a note to write you if anything comes up on James Curtis, but nothing yet.

No, I never received anything from Mary Ellen... anything good? Did she find that "Nimrod in a haystack"? :)

Jane: I know we've talked before (several years ago). Anyhow, I didn't realize that you were born in Berrien co. Michigan. I'm descended from James Curtis Dart b. 1818 N.Y. However, most of his kids located in Berrien co. Mi. My husband and I grew up in Grand Rapids. Mi. too. Are you descended from Byron Dart? Still haven't found out where my James died or when. Always look for Nimrod when I'm searching because I feel that we are some how connected. Did Mary Ellen ever give you info on George Dart from Monkton, Vt?

Jane

Nimrod W's & Moses' move together from Indiana to Arkansas. Moses & Amor's connections back in Indiana. They all being born in Maryland. Plenty of common kid's names. These all say Moses, Nimrod and Amor were if not brothers, at least first cousins.
As for the Burtons, you missed John's post! He's going down to little old Newton Abbot Devonshire to check the old books. Well dang! I need to go there too! Since it is a little closer for him, maybe he'd look up the marriage of John Burton and Harriet sometime around 1844, they just might mention her maiden name.

The Darts are on my father's side, but on my mother's is Great-Great Grandmother Susan Burton born in Trusham Devon, just a few miles north of Newton Abbot. Her parents were John and Harriet. John came down from Wiltshire, Harriet was born in Trusham in 1826, would love to find her maiden name

Yes, much too common names I'm afraid. I know the railways kept their own records, so you might try pursuing those. If you don't have your father's death certificate, you should definitely obtain that -- it would most likely give you a lot of info, including his parents names.

Unfortunately it appears that 'Izzy' is deceaased. The email has not worked for some time and her name was Jossi and I think I found her death cert.

I am descended from Pheobe Dart (1836-1916) - Married to John Fry (1832-1900). My best guess is that she is the Pheobe Dart listed in Clark Co, MO in 1850 as the daughter of James and Sarah Dart. My trip to Iowa a few years back provided no other information about her family. Guess I need to make another trip.

I got some of the dates from Myma Doble McGhie [Mlee2001@gci.net in 2001] might not be a good address now!
In the 1860 census Lawrenceville, Denison Twp., LAwrence Co., Illinois Amor [I will use this spelling] gives his DOB as 57 which makes him born in 1803 unless of course you found his grave site. The given name of "Amos" is found throughout the Iiams [Iams, Imes] genealogy. So unless I find something sufficient that would substantiate Amos being Amor, I will keep it as Amos. The Robinettes, Iiams, Somerfield travel with the Darts. I can see this through the census.
Do you have the correct dates that you can give me on Thomas Dart's family? Do you have the DOD for Thomas?

I am a descendent of Elisha Drew & his second wife, Anna Ortentia Woodward. Our family stories name Rebecca Dart/Darte as his first wife. They had two children, Daniel Drew (who married Evalina Woodward) and Dorothea/Dorothy/Dorotha Woodward. Brother & sister married brother & sister. And to complicate the matter, Anna Woodward (who married Elisha) was sister to Daniel & Dorotha. We descendents have collected a great deal of information. I'd love to share any we have with you & others who have information. Sherry Drew Phillips. I - unfortunately - am not (as it turns out) an Ilfracombe Dart! Mine come from Waterford. However, I am in contact with Ann Taylor Dart and Kinsey Dart, who are from your line. I went to a Kenneth Dart commemoration last November in Rusthall near Tunbridge Wells (descended from Hibbert, if I remember rightly, at this hour on a friday night) - would love to put you in touch with them. Several live near me in Kent.
Love,
Sally

I suggest you check out Dart - from Butcher to Bishop via the Devon History Society and Ann Taylor Dart via genesereunited - put in your Dart relations and their years and you will get a match.
Thanks, I am considering the possibility that Dart is not her maiden name either and she may have been married to a male Dart who died before she married Moulton Cross. Unfortunately, she died at childbirth and even her son's records show mother's maiden name unknown.

Wish I could answer your question, but can't. It is interesting, though, that the only other 'Wealthy Dart' I've ever run across is the daughter of Ezra & Emma (Newbury) Dart. Ezra was born in 1799 (probably Connecticut), son of Stedman & Sallie (Wheeler) Darte. He doesn't have a sister named Wealthy, but perhaps it was a sister or relative of Emma? Sorry I can't help more, but at least maybe it's a different direction to look in.

James,

There is one researcher who researches this line of James & Sarah (Johnson) Dart... I don't know if you've corresponded with her. She is:
Izzy - Izzy1865@aol.com

Charlotte was born in 1816 and Sarah Johnson wasn't born until 1806, so I doubt James & Sarah Catherine (Johnson) Dart were her parents. The James & Sarah (Johnson) Dart (no middle name Catherine) seem to be different people, even though they were all in Dearborn Co, IN, at one time or another. The names are all too common to figure out. Actually, Charlotte would be the right age and born in the right place to be another child of Thomas D. & Rachel (Iams) Dart... birthdate is just a little too close to Sarah's though, b. 25 May 1817.

Thomas was 16 or 17 when he served in the War of 1812 and James was his younger brother... I think he would've been way too young (I have that James listed as a Private in Capt. Sholt's battalion, along with Thomas and William. Did you say he was a drummer boy? Did they really recruit little boys like that? If James reported his birth year correctly, he would have been 10 or 11 at that time.

Moses (d. 1859) -- Moses is considered a likely child of Thomas & Rachel, but not proven.

I am keeping an eye on this line because I think Rachel (1802-1885) may be a sister to my gg-grandfather Nimrod William DART b. abt 1806 Maryland.
Hi Roberta!
I'm interested in where you came up with those other birthdates for the un-named children of Thomas D and Rachel Iiams Dart. I can only add that your "Amos" is almost certainly Amor Dart born in 1812. The name Amor survives in many different branches for generations. I'm a bit suspicious mother Rachel's brother was Amor not Amos Iiams. James, William and Thomas D Dart all served together in 3 separate Indiana Militias in the war of 1812. Were they brothers? I'd put my money on it, but there could have been a father/son. John Dart born ~1755 of Allegany County Md. has 5 males under 16 in the 1790 census. By 1820, only John (Jr.? born 1777)can be found in Allegany County. A land dispute for John Dart (Jr.) was just 2 miles from William Iiams Sr.'s property, He being the father of Rachel. Another interesting side light, is the Robinette family travel together with the Darts. Their homestead is off Break Neck Rd. in Allegany Co. Same street as the Iiams.

Amos starts to get mixed in with the Amors in The later Dart lines. I've never seen Amor in any Iiams. But I've got a transcribed copy of William Iiams Sr.'s will filed in Pennsylvania after his death and the r-s and s-es sure look the same. Anyway Amor, as is written on his tombstone at Bunker Hill Cemetery in St. Francisville Ill., was born 11/1/1812 and died 9/5/1890. Buried there is Amor's mother, Rachel wife of Thomas Dart, 1/8/1785-12/18/1845. Also Joseph Dart 11/2/1805-3/31/1857 and his wife Catherine 11/15/1810-11/7/1900. The only info on Thomas D. Dart is from a book "History of La Salle County Ill. which says Thomas and family came around 1834, stayed a while then moved on to Missouri where he died. Thomas Dart is found on the 1840 LaSalle Ill. census, with the ever present middle initial "D". If Rachel died in 1845, back at Amor's farm, then Thomas couldn't have lasted too long in Missouri. He is not on the 1850 census. The dates for the girls who stayed in LaSalle County are Sarah Dart (Spradling) 5/25/1817-5/26/1907. And my GR-Gr-Granny Sinah Dart Price 12/9/1821-11/26/1911. I have her obit where it says she was one of 10 brothers and sisters and one of the very last of the earliest pioneers. On the 1880 census(Lawrence CO. Ill.) Amor gives his age as 68.

Sinah (from her obit) 12/19/1821
Joseph (from the Ilgenweb site for Lawrence County Cemeteries) 11/2/1805.
I found a history of Lawrence County site that mentions Rachel who is buried at Bunker Hill Cemetery, was the wife of Thomas "D" Dart.
I'm wondering how James and Sarah Johnson Dart fit in. The
parents of Charlotte Dart Mason, born 12/7/1816, who stayed in LaSalle County Ill. They are in Indiana in 1840 and Missouri in 1850. The children listed on the 1850 are much younger than Charlotte Dart Mason. James also says he was born in 1801. Is this the same James that served in the Dearborn County Ind. Militia in the War of 1812?. Was he a little drummer boy, or did he just under report his real age to the census taker in 1850? They had 3 male children, Hiram, Freeborn, John, along with daughters Mary Jane and Phoebe who married John Fry. I haven't heard of any Dart descendants of these sons of James and Sarah.

That was just a guess about the drummer boy. Thomas D was about 18 when Rachel Dart (Cunningham) was born, by the war he was in his late 20's. Something I can't help but notice is the names of the towns where they lived. Amor and Joseph made the move from Dearborn to Lawrence Co. Ill. The little town nearby is Lawrenceville Ill. Just across the river is Vincennes Indiana. They are buried in St. Francisville Ill. On the 1830 census for Indiana James Dart is in Kelso Township, just next door to Lawrenceville Indiana. The James Dart on the 1850 in Missouri is living in the area of the town of St. Francisville Missouri, just across the river from Vincennes Iowa.

I'm pretty sure James and Sarah both lied about their ages on the 1850 census Clark Co. Mo census! On the 1840, James is still in Illinois where he says he's between 40 and 50. His wife is between 30 and 40. On the 1830 census he's between 30 and 40 and she's still between 30 and 40. A little truth strech there too. On the 1840, he reports 4 females under 10, along with 4 more between 10 and 20. Plenty of room for Phoebe there. What's interesting is they live in St. Francisville Mo in 1850 and in 1840 they lived in St. Francisville Ill. Just across the rivers from both towns is a Vincennes. One in Indiana, the other is in Iowa. My bet is James and Thomas D. Dart were brothers, both sons of John Dart Sr. of Allegany County Maryland.

Re: Nathan/Otsego co N.Y.

The Bolton Book doesn't give us any answers. However, I do know from a death certificate (I think it was) that Theron's father was Nathan Jr. born about 1774 N.Y. No name for his mother but she was born in N.H. Russell was his brother. I think that my husband's grgrgrandfather James was another brother and Diadam was a sister. Can't prove a thing. Are you a DART? By any chance a male? My husband just did a Y-DNA test in hopes of connecting up with other Darts that can't find any documents to support lineage.

Y-DNA test

If you are a male DART/DARTE/DORT/DARTT please do the Y-DNA test. It is painless and quick. Yes, it does cost but it is on sale now at a good price. For those of us that are missing a generation because the records were burned, lost, or just never recorded; this would be a HUGE help! Especially if you are descended from the New York, Mass., New Hampshire, or Vermont Darts. Some of us can't connect up with the Bolton Book for various reasons and are on bended knew asking for help. As soon as I get back the results my husband's test, I will post it. Thanks

Nathan/Otsego co N.Y.

Is anyone else having trouble connecting up with this book? What I have is on One World Tree, however, because I can't find a birth/death record I can't get back to that next generation. So here I have all this research which might connect up with someone else and can't publish it. Therefore, here is what might be: In the 1800 census there are 3 Nathans: 2 in Otsego co., N.Y (father/son?) 1 in Washington co.N.Y.(with father Roswell?). In 1810 we have 3 Nathans in Otsego co. and 1 in Washington co. 1820 only 1 in Genesee co., and a Harvey in Otsego. 1830 finds a Nathan in Chautauqua co. and Otsego. So, what to make of this? One Nathan dies (maybe two) and one moves to Chautauqua co. Nathan (Chautauqua) has sons: Russell, Theron, James, Freeman, daughters: Diadama and Abigail (can't prove any of it). Nathan moves with son Russell first to Erie co. Pa where he dies. Russell continues on to Wisconson as does Theron. James moves to Ohio then Michigan as does Abigail. Freeman stays in N.Y. Cattaragus co. Has anyone else come up with this senerio or connect to any of these Darts?
Reply Report Abuse Print
