Dashiell/Vincent

Dashiell Family Records, compiled by Benjamin J. Dashiell, states in Volume III on page 635:

Priscilla Dashiell, daughter of George Dashiell and Molly Jones.
Married, 12 Oct 1818, to James Vincent.
Issue, seven children who were drowned along with their mother.

It gives no source, no year and no details. It also does not indicate which James Vincent this may have been.

Has anyone any information at all about this? It seems that the drowning of a mother and seven children would have been a noteworthy sort of event.

Marriage of Nannie Dashiel to William Abraham

Appears in The Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 16 August 1890...

Abraham - Dashiell Wedding

For some time past matrimonial events have been very dull in the city, but an event of this character occurred last Wednesday evening, heralded by the distribution of several hundred announcements as follows: "Dr. and Mrs. Dashiell request the pleasure of your presence at the marriage of their daughter, Nannie to William Abraham, Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock, Church of Good Shepherd, Terrell, Texas." When the auspicious hour arrived a large number of admiring friends and well wisher assembled at the Episcopal Church at intent upon witnessing the happy event, and eagerly anticipating the arrival of the couple who were to figure as parties to the connubial contract. Precisely at the appointed hour, the bridal party arrived, announced by the sweet, solemn soul-stirring harmonies of the wedding march beautifully rendered by Mrs. J. F. Gilmore. The party entered the church as follows: First came the ushers, Messers. C. W. Childress, H. Jones, Matthew Roberts and H. P. Ruddell; then the bridesmaids, Misses alice Terrell and Mary Dashiell. These were closely followed by Mr. Allie Dashiell, best man, and Mr. Abraham, the groom, , Mrs. W. B. Dashiell and the bride, Miss Nannie Dashiell. Rev. O. A. Taylor, perfomed the beautiful Episcopal ceremony, which was short, pleasing and impressive. The bride was tastefully attired in a gray woolen traveling dress, shoes, hat and gloves to match and never appeared so sweet and attractive. The groom faced the occasion nobly, exhibiting a modest business like pride in his victory. Two sweetest bridesmaids we ever saw stood on either side of the couple attired in white mull dresses, trimmed with white ribbons. Immediately after the ceremony the bridal party departed for the depot, where they received the congratulations and good wishes of a host of friends. A beautiful bouquet from New York City and many telegrams were also handed them. They were the happy recipients of a number of valuable and handsome presents from friends at home and abroad. Amid a shower of rice, old shoes, etc. the happy couple boarded the evening train for Galveston, where they will spend the honeymoon.

The Times-Star joins many admiring friends in wishing for them success through life's pathway.
Tubman Dashiell - looking for

I am looking for information on a Tubman Dashiell who shows up in the 1810 Tyrell County North Carolina Census. He was married and both he and his wife were in the 26-44 grouping. They had 1 female and 1 male child in the 0-9 grouping.

The Tubman family name grouped with Dashiell would appear to indicate he was from eastern Maryland and the census would indicate he was born in the range of 1760 to 1790 (allowing for errors).

He does not show up again in the census, but it was after this point that the Deshields name appears in Tyrell and Washington counties. He has a good potential of being the ancestor of those Deshields, of which I am one.

If anyone has any information on Tubman Dashiell it would be greatly appreciated.
Dashield(s) of Baltimore

Hi,

My great-grandmother was Anna M Dashield(s), daughter of John and Anna Dashield(s). Anna was born 1847-1849 and her parents between 1810 and 1815. Her siblings include William, Margaret, and Eliza. Anna married James Knox Polk Kirby in Baltimore in the late 1860's.

There were neighbors in the 1850 census with similar names. The names Henry, William, and John repeat. On the 1850 census there are a number of people of this name in Baltimore including Levin who married Elizabeth Hodges and Mitchell who may have married a Renshaw. The close neighbors of my family included Charlotte, presumably Winsen, who married Levering Dashield(s).

The early 1800's show names in Baltimore (Fells Point area) such as Zachariah, John, Charles and Mary. All are listed as Dashields.

I know this family is part of the Somerset county Dashiell family but I have hit a wall in connecting. Does anyone know of this branch? Also, to those who have the books, is the name Dashield(s) covered in those books and therefore would I find them helpful?

Thanks to all,
Gloria

Re: de Chiel chateau in France

Yes, in fact, the chateau -- Chateau Beaulieu -- is still standing and is the visual centerpiece of a state rehabilitative hospital outside the village of Chazay d'Azerque, near Lyon. My family passed by on a holiday in France about 3 years ago. Much of the old castle is still evident, but a new facade mansion-like facade was added in, say, the 1700's -- when the de Chiel's left the property was given to another noble family, the name of which I'm sorry but I can't recall, but they deeded it (minus the chapel and a graveyard) to the French government sometime after WW2 -- and there are a chapel, stables and other out buildings. Though there's not much to help one visually make a connection to the de Chiel's, the hospital director was very much aware of the family name and received us in an extremely warm manner and recounted some anecdotal family history. Most interesting was that some de Chiel's had remained behind when Jacques de Chiel emigrated to Scotland (1595 or so), but that the last vestige of the family name was erased when all direct descendants were guillotined in Lyon during the French Revolution. Also, there's a small museum of local history inside the former Abbot's mansion in Chazay d'Azerques. If you're planning a trip some day, that part of France is beautiful, though I was surprised by the Mediterranean look and feeling of the region. The area is justifiably well-known for its red wines and excellent traditional cuisine. If you plan to visit the chateau/hospital it would be very helpful to have someone in your group who has a reasonable command of French, as not very many local people speak any English and I found that even pathetic attempt to speak in French opened lots and lots of doors that I suspect would have remained closed, otherwise. It would be an awfully long way to travel just to see the chateau, but I won't forget my visit there!
I am trying to connect my gg grandmother, Harriet Crockett Hayman to the Dashiell line. She was married to Robert Handy Hayman (1804-1890). The LDS database shows a Harriet Crockett b. 1804 with parents of Shiles Crockett and Anne Dashiell. There would be two possible Anne's of this vintage, one with parents of John Dashiell and Sarah Killam and the other with parents of Arthur Dashiell and Rachel Cordray. Don't know which of these Annes goes with Shiles Crockett and if indeed the Harriet who was their daughter is the same one married to Robert Handy Hayman. Any ideas?

Best regards,
Jerrod

He has a high probability, based on a will, of being the initial Deshields in the upper NC area. We are trying to link him to a marriage to Nancy Alexander of Tyrell county that married a Dashiell/Deshield/Deshields.

Thanks Edward C.
