Unless your ancestors are from Waco, TX beginning after my great grandfather Paul Dato jumped the boat while enlisted in the French Merchant Marine around 1880, it is unlikely that you are related. Papa was born in the Alsace area of France but as he was illiterate, no one ever knew for sure what the correct spelling of his name might be. You will find Dateau, Dato, and Deteau spellings throughout TX mostly in the central corridor in one of the above spellings and we are all related from Paul Dato. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Dallas along with his 2nd wife (first one died, no info. on her) and his daughter and son by 1st marriage, Will and Rosa Anna. Died during the 1918 plague as did is wife. My grandfather survived the plague as did Papa. There is a famous Spanish general, Eduardo Dato, who lived in the early 1900's and there are many US citizens who are of Spanish origin and migrated to the US west coast via Mexico. Hope this helps.

Hi, I am cheryl Dato, my grandfather came to ellis island around 1900, with some of his family, I know his father and at least one or two older sisters. His name was Carmine Dato, they grew up in jersy City New Jersey. I think his real name may have been carmina, but according to my family his teachers said that was a girls name and changed it to carmine, he came here around age 5, I can not find him on the ellis island list. I know nothing about his parents, for they stayed in Italy. Dato is not a common name in Italy, it is more comomn in spain etc, therefore we think the name was changed at ellis island from Diodato or DeoDato to Dato. I know he had many sisters, ann, and many more, I think he was the youngest, so they all came to NY at once

I have been doing research on my family and have been in contact with various Dato's in Sicily. One of the women I have been emailing with said she spoke to an Aunt of her's and the Aunt said that Dato means "given". She said that during the time of the nobility in Sicily that there were many arranged marriages and that there were many affairs had. The children of these affairs were often given to the churches or to a relative to take away hence the term "given". She said that I would probably come to a point where I would not be able to go back any further in the family history as I would run into one of these children and the line would stop there.

I am looking for a Richard Dato, born ? Jan. 30, 1946 or 47; Roseland Community Hospital, Roseland, Illinois. Birth mother's name Clara Carbenneau (maiden name Fischer), name now Clara Votteler. I am not 100 percent sure of the birth date but in this area of January. If you know of him or have any links or information I would be grateful. This would be my cousin and I am desperately trying to find him for his birth mother who was forced to give him up for adoption at birth. Her greatest desire before she leaves for a better place is to find him and know he is ok. No strings attached.
