Daugherty/Indian Heritage

I recently found a picture of my grandmother Pearl Eva Daugherty (b: 1884) she was wearing Indian apparel; she was about 13 at that time and they were living in Newton County, MO. Her father was Joseph Alfred Daugherty (b: 1848 supposedly MI and d: 1893 in Newton Co., MO) and her mother was Susan C. Jennings (b: 1849 in WI and d: 1905 in OR)(this was Susan's 2nd marriage). Do you know how they could be part Indian?

Hello Shirley,

My name is Michelle Groves Morton. I was searching the Daugherty family tree, just curious to what I find. Woodford Daugherty was my great grandfather. His son, Homer Mckinley was my grandfather. He married Eliza Jane, who was also a Daugherty. Her mother was a Snodgrass. They had 7 children, which all are deceased but two, which one is my Mom Eva Jane Daugherty Groves Lepsch, of Henderson, Ky, and Robert "Bobby" of Madisonville, Ky. I see where that's were the tree stops. I'm not for sure how to add to the tree.
My mom, Eva Jane has 5 children. Married to Walter Groves (deceased), remarried Richard Lepsch ( decreased). children: William Michael Groves of Slaughters (wife Donna) Mitchell Lynn, of Evansville (wife Becky), Michelle Jayne Groves Morton (husband Jerry), Marc Layne Groves, of Orlando,Florida ( my twin brother), and Melone Le Groves Jordan, Charlotte, NC.
Robert Daugherty- (Wife Floy) has two children. Keith Daugherty of Tennessee, and Scott Daugherty of Texas.
I could probably have my mom help with info if you'd like. You can email if you'd like.

Sincerely,
Michelle

There was a William T and CP Daugherty living with the Davis family in 1860....and then William T with Cornelius and Elizabeth in 1870 in Missouri. Hope you can shed some light on this. The William T I am interested in Married Margaret Tallent in Dent County, MO.
Thank you

I know you posted this a long time ago but in case you were still searching I thought I'd try to help. I'm not a Daugherty but every year on the first Sunday in May there's a coal miners reunion at the Bondecroft Elementary school. They have hundereds of pictures, books, and documents that you can search thru. They also have a guided tour of the communities to show you where everything was during that time. It's really worth checking out. I live in Clifty and have all my life. If I can help out in any way let me know. I hope some of this helps you.

It's been quite some time since I looked at Ancestry.com but today is the anniversary of my father's passing, so started looking up things. I don't remember a Homer, but that's not to say with 10 or 12 kids in my father's family. So I assume most of his brother & sisters have passed on, but sure I must have a lot of cousins running around. My email has changed to corona53@me.com or corona1953@gmail.com I have some pics of my grandparents Clyde William Daugherty & Carrie Florence (Helmick). Do you have any more info? I may be able to figure out a list of names for my father's brothers & sisters.

I'm working on the last chapter now of a book on the Owen Daugherty Family (1656 - 1712). Some years ago, someone emailed me, asking a question about the ancestry of Samuel Owen Daugherty. I'm sorry that I've had a computer failure in the last year and lost that person's name.

At the time, I didn't know how Samuel hooked back into the larger Owen Daugherty line. NOW I DO! If that person sees this and wants to contact me, I'm happy to share what I have.

Please use my personal email at dosthart@gmail.com .

Icy Daugherty as head of household. Isaballa married Lewis Hamilton Howland in 1856 in Rutherford County TN. Their last child was born in 1874. I cant find a death record on Lewis or Isabelle Howland. I dont see them in the 1880 census. She was his second wife and he was much older that she was. I have read online that he died 4/18/1875 but I cant find a record to back it up. I lost her completely.

looking for any information on James Thomas Daugherty(or might have been Thomas James Daugherty/Dougherty) from Ontario, Canada.
Supposedly the brother of John & George Edwin Daugherty. Son of Richard Henry Daugherty & Alice Langhern.

In George Edwin Daughery's obit it mentions a brother James and in Richard's obit it mentions a son Thomas. But none of the census show a James or Thomas with Richard & Alice and can't find a birth or death record.

Hi Heidi, I am Hughie are you by any chance any relation to the John M. Daugherty Line that John was born August 13,1804 at Weavers Old Stand,Westmoreland County,Greensburg,PA and he married Catherine Leasure in 1830 and she was born June 1812 in Greensburg,Westmoreland County,PA and she passed away in July 1874 and John passed away in September 21, 1889 in Pitcairn,Allegheny County,PA see after Catherine passed John went to live with his Grandson William Daugherty Jr who was an undertaker in Pitcairn,Allegheny County,PA and see alot of the relatives lived in Patton Township which was now the Monroeville,Allegheny County area and was named after the Patton Family and it bordered Franklin Township,Westmoreland County but in February 1852-1853 Franklin Township then became Penn Township,Westmoreland County,PA and John and Catherine are buried in The Buelah Reformed Presbyterian Church Cemetery and the Cemetery runs along side of Pleasant Valley Road and the Church was torn down in around 1932-1936 because of the Great Depression the Congregation was so small that the Church couldn't exsist and plus if you would look up information on The Buelah Reformed Presbyterian Church from the Presbytery in Philadelphia,PA it is listed as Claridge,Penn Township, Westmoreland County,PA because the Cemetery is so old but there is probably 100-125 graves in The Cemetery and thats where the McWilliams who are also related are buried up along the tree line and than the third row is the Daughertys(Doughertys) see from 1750 and back they spelled the name Dougherty and over in Ireland they spelled it Dougherty and O'Dougherty and Daughentaigh but from after 1750 you will find the name is spelled Daugherty,Daughtery but some still used the spelling of Dougherty but John Daughertys records are in The City County Building in Pittsburgh,Allegheny County,PA and John being born was 1804 is spelled Daugherty but the relatives that had the Funeral Homes in Pitcairn,Allegheny County,PA William spelled his name as Daugherty but his son William Norris Daugherty who owned the Funeral Home in Trafford,Westmoreland County,PA and his son William E. Daugherty spelled it Daughtery. John and Catherine had a farm of 106 acres in Penn Township,Westmoreland County,PA and their home probably a log cabin was along Abers Creek which bordered Penn Township,Westmoreland County and Franklin,Allegheny County,PA and John and Catherine had ten children they are buried in Buelah Cemetery along Pleasant Valley Road in Peen Township and also Stone Church Crossroads Cemetery located in Monroeville,Allegheny County,PA and the Irwin, Union Cemetery in Irwin,Westmoreland County,PA along Pennsylvania Avenue and Bridge Street. If I can be of any help and this is the correct line let me know I will share info with you. Yours Truly, Hughie lkyspgot57@aol.com

My research has been on the Hay/Hays family who lived in Baltimore in the late 1700's. Recorded in the Zion Lutheran Church book in Baltimore is a Wm Hay who had a son whom he named Wm Daugherty/ Dougherty, born 1794. The sponsor was Wm Daugherty.

There is a deed record recorded 7 August, 1821 in Baltimore. It was for an indenture from a Mary Peters and others to Wm Hanson and John Smith. This document states that her husband, John Peters, purchased this land in 1795. It also states John died and in his Will (recorded 7 July,1805) he left this land to his wife and their son, John. If John (jr.) died intestate and no children then the land would be sold and proceeds would would be split between James Daugherty and Michael Steitz. The son, John Jr. , James Daugherty and Michael Steitz all died intestate with no children. " James Daugherty hath left a brother named John and a sister named Mary who hath intermarried with John Staylor". Michael Steitz's brother, Wm Steitz replaced Michael in this deed.

Listed in "Maryland Marriage Records" are the following marriages: John Peters to Mary Steitz, 27 Jan., 1792 , marriage returns of Rev. Daniel Kurtz
Wm Hay to Susanna Steitz, 1791, Rev. Kurtz
John Staylor to Mary Dougherty, 7 Jan., 1817, Cathedral marriages

John Hay, born 1764 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Sponsor to his birth was John Mohr. John Hay was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Baltimore.
While we did have family from that area, none of the names given to me by you came up on our tree. That doesn't mean we don't have relatives of the same blood, I just don't have them on my tree. Thanks! If you do find any other names of the same sur name, please get back with me!

Charles,

I forgot to mention, Daniel was a Justice of the Peace in Anderson County, the book i refered you to is extensively documented with photocopies of sources of deeds, death certificates, census and military service documents. The genealogy in some sections is somewhat confusing, but with a little time I have been able to sort out over half of the book into FTM in 6 hours, will finish tomorrow, only thing is the library only permits 10% of a book to be copied per day, and that equates to 20 pages @ $3.00 ($0.15/page)!
if you email me, be sure and put a "_" between SCOTT and USF!! I could photograph the documents with a digital camera, that is what I did in Ireland! Easier to share too!
Robert

Charles,

Please contact me. I have been continuing the connections from Charles thru son Daniel in Anderson County. There is a book here in the McClung Collection/East Tennesssee Historical Society in Knoxville, TN on this line to near contemporary people, printed in 1986 by Wanda (Daugherty)Kelley from Harriman, TN titled DAUGHERTY AND RELATED FAMILIES, it is over 200+ pages (double sided) with about 100 pages of it in photographs. It covers Daniel Daugherty 1797-1882 and all descendants through the 1980s, with Bunch, Seiber, and many other lines in the New River area of Anderson County. I was researching that very book today here in Knoxville. You might also be interested we have linked the Michael Dougherty ancestors to my Doughertry Line as well as the Hugh Dougherty Line in Ireland through the efforts and resaerch of Clann O'Dochartaigh. I was in Ireland in September of 2011 for 3 weeks researching in Derry, Lifford and Dublin. If you have had no responses on your New River Daughertys, please contact me direct at RJSCOTT_USF@ATT.NET Hope this helps you!

After reading your post, I'm very curious about your mentioning the wave of Doughertys into Pennsylvania.
I have links to some in southern York County Pa. It's just north of the Mason Dixon line. Been trying to go back farther to no avail. The first evidence of Adam Dougherty in Hopewell twp. is 1790 census. There is also a William and a John Dougherty in Chanceford twp.(same county), not far from Adam. The first evidence of Wm. and John is 1766.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

This is really odd. After I emailed you, I talked with a fellow Dougherty researcher who has been working with Irish genealogists for the Ireland side of the picture. He mentioned that there were four main waves of Dougherty immigrants between 1650 and 1800 -- my group to Baltimore, then Virginia; another group to Somerset County in Maryland, one to Virginia and then Kentucky (the Michael Mor branch), and one line to Pennsylvania. Which, of course, made me think of you. How far back have you been able to trace your line? Were John's parents born in Ireland? (Which would make them contemporaries of my line). Here are our common family names -- James, John, William, Nancy, Samuel, Nathan, Margaret. Four siblings came over sometime between 1780 and 1790 -- Willim, James, Nancy and John. There were probably other sibilings who remained behind in Ireland. The siblings' parents were Sean and Nancy McColgan Dougherty who lived in Ishkaheen, Inishowen, Ireland. (William was the only family name to spell it Daugherty.) Grandparents were Seamus and Attrica Harte O'Dougherty, also from Ishkaheen. We have found a common ancester with the Michael Mor line, and are currently working on the Sommerset, Maryland group. Can you give me any info about your line -- family lore, common names, etc. My fellow researchers were very excited when I told them about your email concerning the Pennsylvania Daughertys. If you like respond to me directly by email -- annehd@bellsouth.net. Thanks!

Sorry, none of my Daughertys/Doughertys had any contact with Pennsylvania. They migrated to SW Virginia, Scott County to be exact, around 1800 and pretty much stayed there until my great-grandfather moved his family to east Tennessee.
