Ray Daughters/Seattle

John, Jody & Carole - I rememeber well my mother's respect and admiration for Ray Daughters. My mother's name was Irmgard Schoennauer, and she trained under his mentorship at the Washington Athletic Club in the late 1930s. Although I grew up as a child with two bookcases of her swimming trophies in my bedroom in Seattle, unfortunately I know only few details of her swimming career. One of the things I do remember is how she talked of Ray in very respectful terms.

My mother died in 2003 (83 years old), and I regret not asking her more about the championships she won and the records she broke under his tutorship. I think my mother joined the WAC in about 1935, probably desiring to follow in the footsteps of Helene Madison, another Seattle swimming champion, and was a member of the 400-yard relay team that won the National Championship in 1938.

Do any of you recognize my mother's name in the book, newspaper clippings, or photographs you write about? I would love to obtain further information about her years of competitive swimming, both for the Univeristy of Washington and the Washington Athletic Club. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank, Bob
I recently sent off for the pension file for Benjamin Daughters and hopefully it will give a little insight into things. As far as how I am related. I am through Betsy Ann Carr and Wyvils daughter Sarah Cathern. Does anyone out there have pictures of any of Wyvils kids. Any of them is great. I do have one of Sarah and I am trying to find pictures of her siblings and half siblings to determine where the Indian comes from. When i get the pension file I will be glad to let everyone know what is in it. Courtney Storck If you do have any pictures please email me at crancestry@yahoo.com

Does anyone know where the Indian is in the line? The photo that our family has on Sarah Cathern definately shows that there is Indian in her but we cannot establish from whom. Sarah is buried here in Sedgwick Co., Kansas where I live. Shemarried Michael Glass and they had 10 kids. On my website is a photo of her son John Wesley Glass. I have a photo of Sarah but have not put it on my site. Betsy Ann Carr was the daughter of James Carr and Catherine Tice. Please email me with any information if you have some.
Wyveil is listed on 1850 US Census in Iowa. Lee County, Fort Madison. age is 29
Wife is Elizabeth age 25
children: Hiram age 9
Benjamin W. 3
Sarah C. 2
Looks like this family is living with Hannah Harding, Nancy and William.
===========================

Since Elizabeth Jane Sigler and Wyval Daughters were not married until 1857 this Elizabeth must be Betsey Ann Carr as Betsey is a nickname for Elizabeth.

I found the 1860 census record of Wyval and Jane in MO

Daughters, Wyvil 39 yrs. cooper b. in Del.
Jane 28 yrs. housewife b. in Ohio
Sarah C 10 b. Ind.
Isaac C 6 b. Iowa
Caram J. 1 b. Iowa
Jno. H. Harris 8 b. Iowa
Benj Daughters 12 b. Ind.

Also, the pension record for Benjamin Daughters is Co K 51 MO Inf. ; Wyvil Daughters, pension filed 1882 (or 92??) March 26-father. If the soldier were unmarried, the parents could apply for the pension.

1900 Carroll county census and found :
page 2

Daughters, Madison b. July 1861 38 yrs. old married 10yrs. born in MO, father b. Delaware, mother b. Ohio.
Emma G. b. June 1867 in IA, 32 yrs., father b. VA, mother b. OH.
Edna N. b. Oct 1882 in IA-7 yr.
Ada B. b. May 1894 IA - 6 yr.
Lena M. b.Dec 1895 IA - 4 yr.
Walter A. b. June 1897 - 2 yr.
Carrie A. b. Feb 1899- 1 yr.
Heater, Jane, mother-in-law b. Sept 1827in Ohio, father b. in VA
HODGKIS, Archie- servant- b. Feb 1884, 16yrs, b. IA, f. IA, m.

Pouring over more info. I found penciled in above Wyval Cadmus Daughters "1st Rachel Carr" I assume this to be a first wife. No children listed. ALSO, above Jane Sigler, "1st Norman Haskins" 2 children listed 1. John Henry 2. Norman Gossard. Perhaps on the census, it was Haskins rather than Harris? Clark County, Missouri records listed Mrs. Jane Harris marrying Wyval Daughters in 1857. Wyval and Rachel or Betsy Carr or someone else? had children already - Issac and Benjamin. I believe Clarinda to be the 1st child of Jane and Wyval.

I guess the next thing is to go through the Carroll County, Iowa microfilm for spring of 1896 and look for an obit for Wyvil.

Benjamin DAUGHTERS b: in IN
Isaac DAUGHTERS
Clarinda DAUGHTERS
James Madison DAUGHTERS
Sarah DAUGHTERS
Lulu Ellen "Dude" DAUGHTERS
Hester DAUGHTERS
Katherine "Kate" DAUGHTERS
Walter DAUGHTERS

Let me know what matches your information or won't work at all.
John-
The Museum of HIstory & Industry in Seattle (where I work) has a collection on Helene Madison (on which I am currently working) which includes many clippings mentioning Ray Daughters, as well as some photographs depicting him, including ones of early WAC swim teams. If you are in Seattle, stop by and have a look. You could probably help with identifications!

Best regards,
Jody

Maybe Wyval Daughters was married before Betsey Carr. I also have a Isaac C listed as a child of Wyval & Betsey. Wyval and my ancestor Elizabeth Jane Sigler married in 1857 and in the 1860 census Isaac was 6. So he was 3 when Wyval and Elizabeth Jane married. They had 6 children that I can document. So they were half siblings to Sarah Cathern

Lorraine

I have info on six Daughters who died in either Tripp or Hammill South Dakota since 1983. If one of these individuals was Jennifer's grandparents you might be able to trace her if she came to the funeral. I would like to know how the Osbornes fit in with the Daughters. My e-mail address is Leslie_Barnes@msn.com. I will help you if I can. Will need more info on who your folks are.
Wyvil Daughters and Betsy Ann Carr were my gggg grandparents. I am always looking for information on them besides Census also any pics anyone knows of. My picture of Sarah Cathern Daughters who was their daughter looks part Indian and so I am constantly searching to find out if Betsy Ann Carr was part Indian or whether Wyval was? Wyvil was the son of Gillis Daughters and Sarah Messic. Wyval had several siblings including the following:
Calvin
Randolph
Emmaline
Caroline
Benjamin

I believe these to all be his siblings by marriage dates etc. Most were married in Ripley County Indiana in the 1830's and 1840's. I believe that Benajmin and Sarah C. Daughters were the only two children by Betsy Ann Carr and Wyval. They also have a son Hiram Daughters who seems to have been born out of wedlick to the couple. He was born about 1840 years before they were married! If anyone knows anything about this please let me know. Or if anyone has photos. Thanks
Courtney Storck
Hello!
I had seen information regarding Gillis & Sarah (Messic)Daughters as parents for Wyval. I have also seen 2 other children listed for them as well those you've listed - Mary Ann
& Woolford M. Daughters.

I had a son, Issac C. as a son of Wyval & ------ Carr. The name on our old papers years ago gave her name as Rachel instead of Betsy.

Do you have a date of birth on Sarah? I'm also missing dates on Wyval & Betsy as well as where they died/are buried.

I have census info on this family from 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1895.

I descend from Wyval & Elizabeth Jane Sigler Daughters thru their daughter Lula Ellen "Dude" Daughters. I have Elizabeth listed as Mrs. Elizabeth Harris when they married bringing at least one child with her to this marriage.

I also have Hiram listed on an 1860 US Census but didn't have him as a child of Wyval

I had Cathern as middle name for Sarah but I also have a daughter for Wyval and "Jane" by the name of Katherine aka "Kate" would assume they wouldn't use the same name twice but one never knows...
Any bits and pieces would be welcome!
Thank you!
Kristi Bruner

I had been given the name "Rachel Carr" for Wyval's first wife from my mother's genealogy records from 30+ years ago. Is Rachel also "Elizabeth/Betsey"? or perhaps a sister to her?

I also had a 6 year old son Isaac C. listed on the 1860 Census for Wyval & Elizabeth.

Any ideas? Thank you!

Kristi Bruner

Thank you! I have Wyval married to a Rachel Carr earlier which would explain the children born prior to his marriage to Elizabeth Jane Sigler Harris. I appreciate your help- Wyval seems to be one of those "Brick Walls". I have not been able to verify date of death or locate headstones for either him or Jane. Thanks again!
Hello again,

This is a brief followup - I'll post a bit more in a couple of days. Ray Daughters is discussed at length in the book "Their Day in the Sun: the Women of the 1932 Olympics" by Doris Pieroth, a Seattle writer. It is an excellent book on the first Olympics to have wide spread participation by women athletes. Ray was a strong supporter of these women as coach of the U.S. women swimmers. He spent much of his career as Athletic Director at the Washington Athletic Club in Seattle. Ray taught thousands of Seattle women and men to swim and dive - thanks for your story about your grandfather, if you cared to share one of your clippings, I would be delighted. I am a nephew of Ray's - my father was a younger brother of his.

John Daughters
