I haven't touched my research since Katrina and noticed reply of my 2008 inquiry. I left off reviewing Henri's son marriage certificate, and Henri was from the Island of Guadeloupe. Planning trip there soon after retirement to continue research. Would love to hear from any other descendant doing same research.

Hi Jan, Mary Dauphin, daughter of John C. Dauphin (b 10/26/1821) and Sophie Sneider (d. 4/12/1865) married to Peter Springer....Mary and Peter Springer are my great, great grandparents, on my father's side. Info I have found indicates that John Dauphin was born in either Germany or Prussia, immigrated to US inn 1848. I can find no information on his wife, Sophie. The info I have on Peter Springer is that he died in Andersonville Prison in TN during the Civil War. Do you have any other information? Gertrude Springer Madden, Peter and Mary's daughter is my great grandmother.

These Dauphin's are in my family tree. I haven't touched my research since before Katrina. I just restored my FTM program to my computer. I was trying to locate someone that I had communicated with prior to Katrina that had photos of other descendants when I came across your post. I don't remember if we ever communicated previously. Henri is my 3rd great grandfather. I have some info, although you probably have the same info, I would be happy to share.

Sue,

Hello! I have also been trying to find the parents/grandparents of Darling Dauphin for a family tree I am making for my mother in law. I am a descendant of Darling's son, James Dauphin. Our family comes from Texas.

Do you have any further info on the background of Darling Dauphin? I am trying to trace back to France but, like many others, the trail keeps getting cold.

Hope to hear from you soon!
I have a book that was compiled in 1975 by my Dad's cousin and his wife, Vernon Mayfield Dauphin Jr. and Sue Lipps Helfrich Dauphin. It has Darling Dauphin's family tree from his birth in 1769 through 1974. However, they started with Darling Dauphin and there is no information on his mother or her maiden name. If you are interested e-mail me at ddjones531@gmail.com and perhaps I could send you this family tree that I have if you think it would help.
Debra

Hi!
Glad to hear from you. First off, how are you related to Maximillian? He had a daughter Ellen, but I was told she died at 14 years old. Her mohter was Cecilia Choppin.

a)I have Marie's birth certificate request with her mother's name listed as Josephine Marie Laurance Licour Dauphin. I was unable to find their marriage ceritificate.

b)Josephine was a dressmaker, a fiercely independent woman and in 1870 left for Victoria with the 3 children, leaving William behind. There are no divorce papers, although she remarried a John Sewell Bates in BC but that only lasted a few years, too. John & Max worked at the Iron works together and were co investors in the Mary Wllen ship cinfiscated by the US government from ALex aka Seawolf. William remarried Mary Woodward of NY Woodward Steam Pump Works but she took him to court on bigamy charges in 1887, as he was still married to Jospehine. He claims he was not legally married to Mary. I have the NY Times article.

e)Lucy married ALex MacLean....aka Seawolf. DOn MacGillvray(a professor at University in Nova Skotia) wrote a book about him recently. The book is Captain ALex MacLean. Our family is written about on several pages. I contacted him and he gave me lots of links, all from the book. You must buy the book. It was great fun to connect with him and read about Josehphine and Lucy. I have family photos of Josephine, Lucy, Marie (my ggma), but not their brother Max or father William. Lucy & Alex had a daughter Catherine who disappeared after her mothers death into the Yukon territories. I have multiple articles on Alex & phots of him. I have a photo of Josephine, marie and Frank on a porch in Victoria.

I have Williams naturalization papers, ships passages and a letter to his children from 1901 regarding the estate of the family. Maximillian August left an estate to his family, but his 2nd wife, Rosa La Branche hid assets. They investigated her for 12 years. The estate was finally settled in 1904. She died a year later.

From reading your post, I am figuring you are the descendant of Maximillian and Jessie of Victoria?
I have been unable to find William's death certificate, but I found articles about him in the NY Times.

I recently wrote to France and traced our family back to 1776 in Wissemburg, ALsace. Charles William Frederick, Maximillian Auguste Dauphin, Charles Theodore & Sophie Amelie were born to Charles Theodore Dauphin (leather merchant) and Barbe Fauth in 1830. Charles Theodore senior died in 1844. Barbe died in 1901. I have the court documents from succession of Maximillian of NO, LA estate. Theodore was in the Union 2nd regiment but deserted in the Civil War. He has descendants but they are not legitimate and no names were listed in the court documents although they are claimants to the estate.

I am the descnedant of Marie and Frank Kent Winch. My grandfather was their son Romeo Carlos. Perciville, Rigiletta & Pearl were his siblings. They all moved to San Francisco for a few years because of economic hardship says Don MAcGilvray. I have photos of my gpa working in a store in San Francisco.

We should really exchange emails....I have so much more info. I have done a family photo tree back to Joepshine & Maximillian Auguste. I have no pics of Sophie Amelie, William or Theodore. Evidently Maximillian had a few estates and a cotton plantation in Alabama. His estate was worth near a million dollars. I looked online at the house but it is hidden in a grove of trees on Carondelt and Josephine.

We had a family estate in France until the 1920's. It is a small chateaux that was used as a stronghold for the German army in WW2. Friends of mine visited the chateax 5 years ago. I had wanted to take Aunty Berniece but she was too sick to travel and so I am trying to reconnect with the owners to visit again. I have photos and a postcard from William that he sent the children in 1901. He had to return to France to settle his mothers affairs...another very good story. He and Maximillian had Parkinsons and had treatments in Stuudgart. My grandfather had Parkinsons too, but nobody since.

So I am guesssing you live in BC. THe Barber Family are descendants and relatives of mine. I only see them at funerals, unfortunately. I emailed them but they have not responded. I am hoping to obtain more photos and details.
We should connect.

If you could send me the address of the house on Ursuline, I could google earth it.

My email is the troyers@comcast.net. I live in Sammamish, WA. My family lived in Georgetown/Beacon Hill, Seattle.
I would be happy to exchange documents with you....They are all in my computer and binder I have assembled. I am planning a party this June with all the relatives to exchange photos and stories. My hope is to create a family site, so family can share their stories and pics....this will take a while. I have a lot more to learn about documenting online.

I hope to hear from you soon.

bientot,

Katherine Joe Winch Troyer

Dear Kathy; I am so sorry I have taken so long to reply to you. I was away on holiday when your message came. Well, this is exciting! So the information I have is;
a) Marie Dauphin's birth certificate, born July 24, 1859. Parents Guillaume Dauphin, born Departement du Bad Rhine, France, aged "about 24" The "..Issue of marriage with Josehine Nicour, a native of New Orleans."
b) Josephine's death certificate, born March 13, 1840 in Mobile, USA, married to William Dauphin
c) Her burial certificate stating she was born in Mobile, (she died from heart failure after an operation in St. Joseph's Hospital, Victoria B.C.)
d) Josephine's father was Christopher Nicour
e) Josephine and Guillaume had 3 children, all born in New Orleans.
Marie, born July, 1859, married Frank Winch, a carriage builder boen 1851, England and she died June 10, 1941 Victoria, B.C
Lucy born 1862 married Captain Frederick Maclean
Maximillian, born 1869. Married Jesse Maud Sullivan, born 1876 Toronto Ontario. Maximillian was a pattern maker at the Albion Iron Works and he died July 13th, 1902 after a 3 month illness. Jesse remarried. His name was Alfred J. Dods, (and I think he was a witness at Max and Jesse's marriage) Jesse is buried with both her husbands beside Josephine.
I believe the immigrated to Canada in 1879 but I have no record of Guillaume being here. I do have a beautiful music box that he brought from San Francisco, (he supposedly was a sea captain).
They were in New Orleans during the War, yet there is no record of Guillaume in the army. They lived on Ursuline Street, in the French Quarter. (I got the chance to see the house, how wonderful it was!)
During the War, there were a number of both Southerners and Yankees here in Victoria, they used to have battles on Government Street! I have often wondered in Guillaume brought his family here due to a bad yellow fever outbreak in New Orleans that happened I believe in the late 1870's.
The one thing I think would help me to break through would be the Union Provost Marshal's Files. They were living in New Orleans during the War and it had fallen to the North in the very early years, I believe it was 1862. Civilians had to swear Oaths of Allegiance in order to buy food and fuel.

I really would like to get some more information on Guillaume and Josephine. I do apologize for being a bit scatter brained. It has been a while since I even looked at my findings.

Look forward to your reply. Sincerely Sara
Can you illuminate me as to who Eduard's parents are? I am so close to breaking through the mystery of all teh family. There is also a Theodore listed as a claimant to the estate after Mx's death in 1880. I found the court documents of the succession of his estate. Is Eduard the son of Max's brother, Charles William of NY?
Tell me everything you know....I've been collecting documents and have a sketchy tree.
You know, I think there is a connect. I found a census of Josephine that listed her birthplace as Moblile, ALabama. WE need to talk....I have so much information but still sketchy on who William is...Josephine is listed as a widower and she remarried at 44. IS she married to teh brother of Maximillian of 1837-1890? Who are Williams parents and where was he born?
thank you

13/06/45 Dauphin, Josephine, f, head, w, 13 Mar 1839, 62, New O., USA, to Can: 1880, RC.
……Rems: 1900DIR: 24 Caledonia Ave, Dauphin, Mrs Josephine, dressmaker, wid Wm.
I'm not sure this is the same family....Josephine's family was from Weissembourg, France. Her siblings were Maximilian, Charles William and Marie. Her mother was Barbara Fauth Dauphin. I cannot find the name of Barbara's spouse. Josephine left New Orleans after Max's death in 1880 and moved to Victoria, BC. She was a millner and opened a shop there, remarrying a John Sewell Bates at the age of 44. Her children were Marie, Lucy and Max ( who died in 1902 at the age of 31). Lucy married Alex McClean and had a daughter Catherine who vanished into the Yukon. Her father was Seawolf. I believe I am the descendant of Marie (Nina)& Francis KentWinch. I am still trying to pin it all down....I know Maximilian and Charles William were born in France. I am not sure about Josephine. I do know her mother is listed as living in France in Max's obit. Illuminate me....

Hi,

I have not been able to connect him to Alabama. His mother was Barbara Fauth Dauphin who lived in Weissenberg, France, died in Victoria, Canada, near her daughter Josephine, the sister of Maximilian. Joesphine moved to Victoria following his death with her 3 children, Max, Lucy and Marie. Maximillian had another sister Marie (Nini), whom I am the descendant of as she maried Francis Kent Winch in San Francisco and another brother Charles F William (Carlos) of New York. Do you have any connections?

I was searching and found your request for information. I found him to be interesting in the fact that his obituary was placed in the Andalusa Alabama newspaper, where a lot of my Dauphins lived. He had warehouses of cotton in La. that were conficated by the North, but he later got the worth of his cotton back, he was a French citizen and hired a French lawyer to defend his case. Have you been able to connect him to the Alabama and Florida Dauphin's?

The brother (Tomas Laurent) of my Great Grandfather (Bartholomew Laurent), both of Mobile, married Irene Cornelia Dauphin of New Orleans @ 1833. He brought her back to Mobile where he eventually took her to court for "drunken & lascivious conduct." She left him and moved back to New Orleans. I have not been able to find anything about either of them (except Thomas' baptism record). Can anyone give me any info or leads on Irene (listed as Erene in court documents)?

Hi Simon,

It is great to hear from someone....I'm confused though, as Maximillian had no children, that I know of. His obituary listed only his wife as remaining heir. Was he previously married? His brother William I can't find after 1901. He was listed in the New York area. If you can illuminate me more, I would be greatful. If you live in New Orleans, the Dauphin place was on the corner of 3rd and Carondelet. It has a covered porch out front, if it still remains.

I have several documents that my Aunt Berneice left me. Unfortunately, she has passed and she never connected with any of the Dauphins in British columbia or New Orleans.
My great great granny Josephine married a William Kent-Winch and I am a descendant of that line.

my direct email is the troyers@comcast.net if you'd like to talk more....oh the stories I can tell! :)

blessings and peace,
Katherine

In March of 1901, Edouard Dauphin was aiding the sister of Max, Lucy & Nina. She was in Stuttegart for palsey treatments. He did all her legal correspondence as they investigated the parties who were swindling their mother. The judge, the cerf (lawyer) and the nursemaid were all consuming her assets...which were considerable even by todays standards....its such an amazing letter. My Aunty Berniece could not remeber the name of the child who wrote the letter. Aunty died 2 years ago.
At any rate, Edouards name is in the letter. That's where I got it.
The letter is unsigned and very diffcult to read as she had palsey.
Autny Berniece remembers that her great granny Dauphin came to visit in British Columbia. She spoke only french and was very stiff. THe story goes that she received notices for taxes on the homestead but couldn't be bothered...she was a bit high and mighty. The estate was sold with everything put out on the lawn...Aunty remebers her father receiving settlement during the depression.
We are related to the Dauphins in British COlumbia. Mabel Barbour is the relative that had the family history investigatedsome 40 years ago. What I have is from that investigation.
I have Marie Dauphin Kent Winch request for birth certificate from New Orleans parish. She was born in 1859.
Max was born in 1837, Marie (Nini) in 1859 and Charles William (Carlos) in 1836, whose son is Esouard. William and Edouard were alive in 1901, residing in New York I believe at the death of Max in 1890. Its listed in his obit. Also Carlos (William) sent a postcard of the family homestead in 1901, sent to my grandfathers family, Kent Winch in Ladysmith, so he must have visited his sister while she was there getting treatments.
I have a number of pictures of the family on the porch of third and Carondelet.
If you are related to me....you are also related to Jack Mclean...Seawolf...Pearl was the daughter of Marie (Nina) Dauphin Kent Winch and Francis Kent Winch. Seawolf was her son.
This is fun...there is mention of Edouard agian in the letter...something about legal counsel in Maryland or somewhere...I can;t find it this am, but will look again.
Tell me about Edouard? How did you connect to Max Dauphin? He was a handsome fella...
I have the Dauphin nose....aaaargh!

Peace.
Kathy

I have copies of his death articles and will...I am a descendent of his family from Wissembourg. His sister Marie (Nini)Dauphin Kent-Winch was my great-grandmother.

Are you related?

I am trying to find out what happened to his brother William in New York...and his other siblings?

He had a first wife and daughter who apparently died...Cecelia and Ellen. Theylived on the corner of Third and Carondelet in New Orleans.

His second wife was Rosa La Branche, his mother Barbara's nurse.

I have letters written between the family regarding health and disappearing money from the estate. Maximillian was power of attorney with Rosa and embezzled money from his mother. The siblings figured it out too late and the homestead in France was sold for taxes, although the siblings were able to keep it until 1928, I believe.
His mother was shipped to Victoria Canada by a relative. She died there.

According to the Marriage certificate of their son Victor Leon, both his parents were from Guadelaupe. I found this at the Library in New Orleans,Victor's parents names were Henri Dauphin and Graciende Tofsy. However, all other births certificates except his oldest son were in New Orleans and listed Marie Rosalba Carrejolles as their Mother. Did his first wife die? Do you have a copy of the marriage certificate to Marie Rosalba?
I have lots more info on Henri's descendants.
I am searching for Victor Guillaume Dauphin, born circa 1845. First noted in Natchitoches Parish in 1860s. Could he be a sibling to your Henri?

I have been reviewing all the old message boards for information leading to the parents of my ggg-grandfather Henri Dauphin who is from Guadelaupe and settled in New Orleans. Your post mentioned a Dauphin from another French Island? Please reply if you have some info.

Any information on how these two were related? Edgar was married and living in New Orleans before he enlisted. He spoke French and his Grandparents were from Guadelaupe.
