J.F. D'autel born about 1775 in France immigrated to Württemberg (probably related to the Napoleonic phenomenon. In 1820 J.F.D'autel came to the US on a Baltimore ship through the Charleston, SC port. There is no mention of his wife on the ship's log, but it mentions that he came with children. Perhaps, she was younger and thought to be one of the children or she came later, which was common. One of the children's names was Johann (John) F. D'Autel (the F. is believed to stand for Friederich). It would appear that the German mother named one child after someone in her family. I believe the other children were named Josephine and Napoleon. I wonder if they went to Ohio first and the wife died there. Then, perhaps he packed up the children and went to Georgia.

J.F's son, Johann (John) F. D'Autel was born in Germany in 1807 in Württemberg. He died in Wilkes Co. Georgia and is buried near Bethel Church. My information does not indicate if Johann's father J.F. D'Autel was buried in the same place. They came over together in 1820. They may have moved around a bit, but settled in Wilkes Co., Georgia. The ship's log showed that he came with his father, brothers and sisters.

There must have been another D'Autel in the middle or Johann produced a child late in life on June 4, 1874 at the age of 67. The reason is my grandfather Joseph Franklin D'Autel was born on that date in Wilkes County, GA. He died April 2, 1933 in Augusta Georgia. His father is listed as, also, Johann F. D'Autel. I suspect that was a Junior. There is no mention of a wife, but it is thought to be someone named Sarah Helena Glade.

Joseph Franklin D'Autel, born 1874 married my grandmother, Ruby Waters, in 1912 in Wilkes Country, GA. Both of them died in Augusta, Georgia. He died 4/2/33; She died 12/12/77. They had two daughters, Emma and Sarah D'Autel. Sarah is still alive and living in California. My mother was Emma and died in 1952 in Augusta, GA.

There were other children and their fate may be listed in marriage/death records of Wilkes Co, Georgia, or even possibly Augusta,GA.

My sister, Kay, lives in Charlotte, NC and she says there is a D'Autel living there. Some people drop the apostrophe.

If you have any better info, please email me. Thanks.
Thank you for your reply!

My mother's branch of the Dautel family comes from that Alsace-Lorraine area of eastern France/western Germany, particularly the little village of Beinstein, Germany. You probably know that the origin of the family name is D'Autel (pertaining to the altar in French, but not sure if it refers to the sacrifice that many made). Many were persecuted because of their faith (French Protestants, or Hugueonots).

I can go back pretty far in this region of Germany, but have not been able to link our branch with others that either stayed in Germany/France or emigrated to the States. I know of one branch (George Dautel, b. 1830) that came to PA early, and many ended up in KS. My family branch came to Philadelphia in 1882, and some stayed there and others moved out west to OK and CA. I believe that they are related to some of the KS Dautels, but not sure how. I have no information about your GA branch.

My mother is descended from the branch that came to Philadelphia in 1882, descendants of Jakob Friedrich Dautel (b. 04 May 1815 in Beinstein, Germany, d. 01 Apr 1871 in Beinstein). His widow, Anna Maria Kraus (b. 03 Dec 1828 in Beinstein) came to Philadelphia with sons Jakob Friedrich, Karl August (my great-grandfather), and Luise Friederike (there were 12 children in all). Luise moved out west, and died in Mutual, OK in 1904. If you are every able to link any of these branches with yours back in Europe, I would be very interested in sharing the information.

Regards,

Bob

My grandmother's grandmother was Frances Parmellee Dautel born in Wilkes County, GA in 1840. Frances father was Louis Jules Dautel born in France 1805 and married Sarah Ann Dudley in 1839 in Richmond County Georgia. Apparently the family was well to do in France. Also they were aristocrats (or some sort of Nobility) that had family members living in Germany and France as this part of europe changed hands back and forth.
My father inherited the family china that is actually the Dautel family china (it is marked dautel on the bottom of all the pieces as if it was made for them). My daughter saw a family crypt in Paris which was in a place reserved for nobles. From what she gathered they were mostly executed or fled during the revolution.
If I find anything on your relatives in my searchesd I will let you know and hopefully this background is helpful to you.
