I am researching a Sowden/Souden family that immigrated from Cornwall, England to Dodgeville, Iowa Co., Wisconsin in 1853. The father, Henry, was the son of John Souden and Sarah Prout. A published biography of Henry Sowden's son, Thomas Davey Souden, states that Henry's wife was Mary Davey. However, another branch of the family has always believed her name to be Mary Hudson. Henry and Mary had the following children, the first four of whom were born in Cornwall prior to their immigration:
Alexander John b. 25 Nov 1845
Elizabeth b. abt. 1848
William Henry b. 24 Jan 1851
Thomas Davey Souden b. 26 Dec 1852
Louise E. b. abt. 1858
Gussie b. abt. 1863
According to U.S. Census records, Mary would have been born about 1823. She died in 1894. The family moved from Wisconsin to Michigan sometime between 1880 and 1912. Henry and Mary's daughter, Elizabeth Souden Amos, was living in Laurium, Houghton Co., Michigan in 1912.
