Has anyone made a link between Daveys in Ireland and the Burkes of Connacht? I’ve found several references to a branch of the Burkes breaking off and becoming Mac Davie.
I traced a possible line of my family (Davey) from Sligo to Galway. As there aren’t many Daveys in Galway, I started looking into name variations and found some interesting texts.
First was a reference to Davey being sometimes used synonymously with Mac Davitt in Ireland in The surnames of Ireland (Maclysaght).
I then discovered a website (
http://rainbowfarms.com.au/1603%20AD%20-%202.html), which contained an un-sourced, yet extensive, history of Ireland. It contained the following text,“ the O Sullivan followers were once again finally attacked also by the Mac Davitt - Burkes - who they nevertheless were somehow able to drive off.” The same website also contains the text, “forces under Mac Davitt - Davie - Davy aka Burke branch”
I’ve since found many references to a branch of the Burkes known as Mac Davie.
