Joseph and Malvina (Millet?) Daviau, Oneida County, New York

I am stuck in my family research at my great grandfather. The 1910 US Census indicates that both he and Malvina, along with two of their children (Arthur and Laura) were born in French speaking Canada. The remainder of their children (Seymour, Ernest, Tenisfal, Norman) were born in New York. I am aware of many descendents that remain in the Oneida County area, however I have no communication with them as my Grandfather Norman, left his family when my father was at an early age. In prior research I came across the possible maiden name for Malvina as Millet or Millett.

Hi,

I just came across your post in regards to the Daviau lineage.

My great-great mother was Sara Daviau. She married Leonidas Castonguay on May 11, 1921 at Sainte-Famille, Cap de la Madeleine, Quebec.

Her parents were Augustin Daviau and Josephine Massicotte. They married in 1901 in St-Narcisse de Champlain, Quebec.

Since Josephine died at age 26, I suppose Augustin remarried. Or that he married her at an older age. :-\ In a census I did find an Augustin Daviau born in May 1861, he was single. And his father was also called Augustin Daviau and born in 1848. I wonder if they are the Augustin I am looking for. They lived in Ste. Geneviève, Champlain, Quebec.

Maybe you could help me better?

Clement Daviau - Biography

The following was extracted from "Historic Homes and Institutions and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worcester County Massachusetts with a History of Worcester Society of Antiquity Vol. III" by Ellery Bicknell Crane, 1907. The entire volume is available on Google Books.

I am currently working on this family, please contact me if you would like to share information.

CLEMENT DAVIAU, deceased, for almost
forty years a shoe manufacturer of Webster, Worcester
county, Massachusetts, was born July 23, 1841,
the son of Peter and Mary (Mandeville) Daviau.

Peter Daviau was born in Canada in 1795, and was
a farmer by occupation. He was a member and
vice-president of the Redmen, and vice-president of
the St. Jean Baptiste Society. He married Mary
Mandevillc, born 1811 and died 1870. His death
occurred February 2, 1895.

Clement Daviau was afforded no educational advantages,
and at the tender age of seven years was
compelled to find employment. His first work was
in the cotton mills at Oxford and Putnam, and later at Stoneville, where he was employed until has was nineteen years of age. The civil war then broke out, and he was prompt in offering his services to defend the Union cause. He enlisted in the Fourth Regiment of Massachusetts Light Battery, and served for four years, distinguishmg himself during this period for his gallantry and intrepidity on the field of action. Upon the cessation of hostilities he located in Webster, and there associated himself with the. firm of C. C. Corbin & Company, shoe manufacturers, being thirty-nine years engaged on contract work. The last five years of his life were spent in retirement. His whole career was one of success. He was pre-eminently a self-made man. Starting out in life with none of the advantages that are the lot of the average boy, he struggled determinedly on, undaunted and undiscouraged by the obstacles that he encountered, and with the characteristic industry and energy of the average young American, succeeded in reaching a high place in the business world. He was an enthusiastic member of the Grand Army of the Republic of Webster, and also the St. Jean Baptiste Society. His religious faith was Roman Catholic, and he was a member and director of the Sacred Heart Church. '

Mr. Daviau was twice married: First, to Lucy Laporte, of Worcester. They had four children, one of whom, Lucy, is now living, the wife of John Simard, and mother of six children; Napoleon, Eva, Mary Angele, Cecille, John, and one other who died in infancy.

For his second wife Mr. Daviau married, August 23, 1873, Exenie Blake, who was born July 19, 1851, a daughter of Edward and Margaret (Vandal) Blake, the former born 1818 and died 1866. Of this marriage the following named children were born: 1. Exenie, June 14, 1874, married May 2, 1900, Daniel Marpis, of Webster; their children: A child, born April 20, 1901, died in infancy; Eva, born September 28, 1902, and Stanislaus, May 7, 1904. 2. Mary, born March 12, 1876, married, April 14, 1896, Alfred Jaques, of Webster: their children: Phillip, born April 25, 1898; Alice, June 9, 1899; Cora, September 22, 1902; and Amelia, Octo- ber• 13, 1904. 3. Clement, born November 20, 1877. 4. Adolpheus, born October 6, 1880, died 1888. 5. Phillip, born April 8, 1882.

The good and useful life of Clement Daviau was brought to a close on July 29, 1901, after he had just attained his sixtieth year.

I have a photo of 3 women listed as Mary Louise Deview, Fozine Deview(poss. Josephine), and Loria Lablue. I'm not sure of the date, just that it is an old postcard photo. It may be before 1920's.

Hi,
I have also researched my family name through my father. I have traced it all the way back to Jacques Daviau in Angers, France, also. His wife was Jeanne Deveau.

Pete,
I am a 10th generation grandson of a Jacques Daviau from Angers, France. He probably came over about 1710 - 1720 to Quebec.

Could Jacques be related to Julien?

Let me know what you think.

My great-grandfather changed the spelling of the name from Daviau to Deveau.

Thank-you,
Martin Deveau

Dear Monique,
Thank-you for your reply. I had the date of birth for Rene ABT 1703. I appreciate the firm date.

I know Jacques Daviau was his father in Angers, France. He was born about 1678. I gather from another posting you wrote he owned a vineyard? I have as his wife Jeanne Devau, b abt. 1683. Do you know anything else about Jacques Daviau?

I am of the Daviau line from Jacques, to Rene, to Augustin, to Joseph, to Michel, to Michel, to Michel, to John Baptiste, to Edmund Leo Deveau, to Kenneth Deveau. Edmund Leo was my grandfather. He was the first Deveau to attend an English speaking school. My father, Kenneth, was from Webster, Massachusetts.

I currently reside in Southern California.

Thank-you for any information you may share with me.

Sincerely,
Martin R. Deveau

P.S.
Here is an email address for you. I have difficulty with it because it is in French. Unfortunately, French is not my mother tongue.

francoise.derouineau@ville-angers.fr

You are looking for Mathilde who married Cyrille Faucher .
That Mathilde was only a Daviau by marriage to Jean-Baptiste Daviau on Feb.1st,1913. Her maiden name was Mathilde Desrocher. in your message you mention birth and death dates, do those belong to Cyrille or to Mathilde.
This is now making me ask questions because Jean-Baptiste remarried a Ida Provost his last wife, so I assumed that Mathilde had died, and that Cyrille was her first husband. Maybe we can figure it out together, contact me at monique@ca.inter.net MONIQUE DAVIAU
