I am seeking birth information (date/place) for my great-great-grandfather, John David. He was born in 1840 in France, but I don't know where specifically. His parents' names were John David (perhaps Jean, since it was in France) and Theresa (maiden name unknown). John (born in 1840, not the father) was a ship's carpenter and he immigrated to New York City sometime in the 1860s, I believe (it could have been earlier). He married Julia Cummings from Ireland and they had three children: Mary Ann (born 1871), Elesebeth (born abt 1875), and Edward (born 1881; my great-grandfather). I would love to trace this family back in France, especially since this is my last name! Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!
