DAVIDGE, Henrietta

I can't tell you anything about the ANDERSON connection, but I certainly would like to know more about Henrietta DAVIDGE. Where was she born? Who were her parents? Is she part of the lineage that Gary Carruthers posted about?

I am a DAVIDGE by birth and am doing a one-name search on this surname everywhere in the world. It is my Yahoo! Group that Sharon mentioned. I'd be happy to have you as a member of the group to share your DAVIDGE information.

Nancy Frey (nee DAVIDGE)

Dear Bonnie,

I hope this still reaches you as we are most definately cousins. Fitzhugh Lee Davidge was my great great uncle. I don't ever remember meeting uncle Fitzhugh, however I have fond memories of his sister, my aunt Clora, (Clora Beedia Davidge.) His other sister, Janie Elizabeth is my great grandmother, her daughter Ernestine Elizabeth is my grandmother and her daughter Mamie Jane is my mother. I am working on my genealogy and I hope we can make contact. My email address is: sherrijmartin@yahoo.com
parents, etc. of Rezin Davidge (1770 Maryland -1867 Kentucky)

I am stumped. I have followed my ancestry back to Rezin Davidge and cannot find any ancestors farther back. Rezin was married to Martha Smith Dallam (1782-1837) and to Elizabeth B. Bell (d 1824). Rezin was a lawyer and judge in Kentucky. Does anyone have the names and dates of his mother and father and/or farther back in history? I have names of his children (both wives), so I do not need them.

I've sent this information to some of my DAVIDGE research contacts but wanted to place it here as I'm sure I've missed some of you.

It would appear from information I recently obtained from FreeREG that the DAVIDGE family in Yarlington were baptising their children in North Cadbury. I had always assumed my North Cadbury DAVIDGE were a separate line, but it would appear this is not so.

Right now, there are people transcribing the earlier North Cadbury parish records which are not online. I am hoping that the Richard that Nick is looking for, as well as the James and Thomas that others are looking for were likely baptised there and we will then be able to link them up to the correct parents.

If anyone would like the Descendants of Richard DAVIDGE c. 1807, James DAVIDGE c. 1806 or Thomas DAVIDGE c. 1802 please contact me directly at ncanuck@gmail.com as I have these on file.

Regards,

Nancy Frey nee DAVIDGE
Newcastle, Ontario, CANADA

I was very interested in your Davidge family. The bit that interests me is Marylebone. My grandfather Joseph was born 1878 approximately. He was born in Marylebone. Unfortunately, I have not been seriously tracing him because of lack of time but know that he had a brother Arthur who had two sons, one being a doctor of science (I think). My grandfather had eleven children and was married to Maud Chambers from Claire in Suffolk. Does this in the least bit link to your family????

Many thanks.

Chris.

Hi Garry

Just a small comment on your Davidge tree.

You have for place of birth for Henrietta Davidge (1.1.62) and Frank Davidge (1.1.63) "South Head, Forbes, NSW". It would have actually been "South Lead, Forbes, NSW" - just a minor thing but it indicates the difference between a seaside town and one which was a goldmining town.

Cheers

Jean
Check under John Davidge b.c. 1820-30 on Genes Reunited and see what you get for hot matches. It is inexpensive to join.

There is a line containing (potentially), my John Davidge as one of 9-11 children with parents William Davidge m. Harriet Bugden. The Bugden surname turns up again in Newfoundland, Canada.

When you get to the right match with a John Davidge b.d.1824 and another John Davidge b. 1829), start looking at the descendancy lines on the left. In one of them, you will find BEALE m. to DAVIDGE, with a John Beale there.
I don't know if this is any help to you, but happy hunting.

Sharon Williams

Sharon:
Sorry to be unable to help presently. I deadend at the marriage of Rebecca DAVIDGE in Maryland in the 1790s. She doesn't fit into the others of this family in the region yet. Somewhere out there must be someone who will come up with her parents or perhaps the relatives she was living with after those parents passed and she came to Maryland to live with them.

Richard Davidge - Yarlington

Hi Nick,

We've been in contact directly but it would appear to me from this posting that you really don't know where to start. Rather than relying on other people's research, you might want to try doing your own.

For information on births, marriages and deaths after September 1837 you should check the FreeBMD at http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl. I did a random search for your Matilda c. 1839 and came up with this citation:

Births Mar 1839
Davidge Matilda Wincanton 10 516

Translated into usable genealogy, it says that the birth of Matilda DAVIDGE was registered 1st Qtr of 1839 in Wincanton Registration District, Vol 10, Page 516.

If you order this birth certificate from the General Register Office (GRO) it will give you more particulars, including the names of her parents, and possibly her mother's maiden name. The certificate can be ordered online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ by using a credit card.

For information prior to September 1837, you need to check the Registers of the Parish for Baptisms, Marriages and Burials (note: you don't get births and deaths prior to 1837).

The best place to start is GENUKI at http://www.genuki.org.uk/. Click through the site until you find the page for Yarlington (try Towns & Villages) and information about what is online or where you can get Parish Registers is there.

You might also try searching for pre-1837 information on the International Genealogy Index at the Latter Day Saints site. This is usually referred to as the IGI and can be found at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?

Another source for pre-1937 information is FreeREG which has transcriptions of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials. They can be found at http://freereg.rootsweb.com/cgi/Search.pl.

If you aren't a member of Ancestry.com (or uk) you should join one of the Rootsweb Lists dealing with Somerset. Post an informative request for a look-up of the Census Records which start in 1841. Make sure you quote the name and date in the subject with the surname in all caps.

By matching up records from the IGI, FreeBMD, FreeREG and the Census Records, you should be able to put together a family tree.

If you have trouble following any of this, just eMail me personally and I'll walk you through it. You have my direct eMail address.

Happy hunting,

Regards,

Nancy Frey (nee DAVIDGE)
Newcastle, Ontario, Canada

I would be very interested in the origin in England of the above and any connected genealogy. Finding my ancestor, John Davidge, who emigrated from England to Newfoundland, Canada, possibly as a pre-teen in the 1830's t0 1845 has taken me to Cann, Dorset as a possible origin.

In the hot match on Genes Reunited, there is a brother/cousin line with the name John BEALE (surname) to the John Davidge's family there, whose father was ?William. Forenames in the John BEALE line dovetail nicely with forenames passed down through families who are turning out to be related.

Information from the 1700-1800s would be most welcome.

Sharon W (Canada)

Hi,
When referring to your ancestors, could you please make sure to add their dob, dom, dod, birth and death place where known and dates.

There's a large group trying to put the larger Davidge puzzle of connections together, but we cannot help you without sufficient detail.

If you are writing from UK, did any emigrate or disappear from census records?

If you are writing from anywhere else, where did your ancestors come from and emigrate to? Who were their siblings (at as many levels as possible).
Have you done a family tree?

So far, we have over 65 people working together, sharing data and this is speading up the connections to a level that would be difficult for any sole searcher to do.

My ancestors emigrated to Burgeo, Newfoundland in the early 1800s for several generations before leaving to spread across the world. I have not found their UK origin, but the map technique is narrowing the most likely areas.

Happy Hunting,

Sharon W (Canada)
envisage88@gmail.com

I think both of your people come from the same growing clusters of those of Nancy Davidge and my group. I started mapping locations of all known Davidge/related names in my possession as to location on a UK Road Atlas and found the majority to be three areas. The largest are the Exmouth/Exeter branches. The next largest are from around Wincanton to Salisbury south of the A303.

Smaller areas seem to be around Market Lavington/Barnstaple, London, possibly as far out as the east shore of Kent.

To date, they appear to have stayed in the south of England.

Mapping confirmed locations of families with a highlighter and a map on a detailed UK road atlas has proven to be very useful, especially for those of us who have no idea where these little towns exist. As you confirm the locations of your ancestors, patterns start to appear, helping you to shortlist those most likely to be related. Most of our ancestors were poor, travelling by foot. This was so normal that walking 10-20 miles per day was not unusual. We need to take this into account. In my family, groups of relatives appear to be within this 10-20 mile radius of each other.

Residents of Britain rely on these road atlases. More detailed ones can be obtained for various areas.
This is the AA 2008 Motoring Atlas Britain. W.H.Smith sells them in the UK, but I would look for used ones in good condition if you need to have them shipped.
I got mine on sale for 6 pounds (regular retail is 20 pounds with 20 pounds of vouchers for Days Inn). They are worth their weight in gold.
I have no conflict of interest or connection with this company, but think maps and highlighters are basic tools of genealogy.

Sharon W (new email below)
envisage88@gmail.com

Hi Nickasbery,

Your people in Yarlington are at the east of a known group in Somerset. I have forwarded your posting to the person I know who knows the most about that group.
Do you have other relatives south and east of the A303? A lot of mine appear to be south of the A303, south to the coast near Poole/Parkstone, back up the main roads to Salisbury.

We have a large group, world-wide, who have pooled their information and would be glad to have the same mutual sharing with you.

Do you know of any Davidges/related names who emigrated to North America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Panama?

Sharon W (Canada)
envisage88@gmail.com

Hi David,
Would like to communicate with you about the families below with particular attention to their locations of origin.
I've been mapping Davidges and related families and have found a path that pertains to the locations in your postings.

While I haven't found any Sherry, Fox or Brockways yet, Davidges of various lines are showing a path through Marnhull, Lydlinch, Haselbury Bryan, Bere Regis, Poole, Parkstone. Bagg, Anderson, Guy, Matthews, Vacher/Vatcher, Caines, Strange, and others are known to have been in these areas.

I think you need to talk to Gary Carruthers as his recent posting (may be on Ancestry) shows some definite similarities. The Jeremiah/Nehemiah combo is rare and I think the location may be right. Hope this is helpful.

Direct contact: sharon1333@sympatico.ca (preferred) or envisage@esuite.ca

Re: Richard Davidge Melbury Abbas

Gary Carruthers has info on Richard Davidge of Melbury Abbas.
A large search group has been formed to search the UK (and other origins) of DAVIDGE and related families. These include but are not limited to the following: ANDERSON, BAGG, CAINES, DAVIDGE, GUY, MATTHEWS, VATCHER are a small sample of the surnames found on the South Coast of Newfoundland, Canada, specifically in Burgeo, NL.

These names are also found in clusters in Devon,Dorset,Dorset and other areas of the south of England.
Collected genealogies show these families to have had close associations going back to before the 1600s with many intermarriages.

These associations continue to this day in many countries- the families tend to like living close together, but we don't usually marry our cousins anymore (knowingly).LOL.

Our group has reconnected many family lines but need more information about the many connected families and have a lot to share.

Contact sharon1333@sympatico.ca (preferred) or envisage@esuite.ca
Hello List,
My version of this family is:

1. Jeremiah DAVIDGE
————————————————————————————————————————

Notes:
This Jeremiah may have been the Jeremiah or Nehemiah Davidge who was convicted at Shaftesbury Hustings in 1830 for taking part in a riot and breaking windows on 5th August of that year. He was imprisoned for a month as a punishment. The records say Jeremiah or Nehemiah. (Dorset Calendar of Prisoners on microfilm, Dorset History Centre)

Spouse:	Elizabeth BROCKWAY

Marriage Date:	1799
Marriage Place:	Donhead, St Marys, Wiltshire, UK

Children:	Nehemiah
George
Henry

1.1 Nehemiah DAVIDGE
————————————————————————————————————————
Birth Date:	About 26 Aug 1802
Birth Place:	Donhead, St Marys, Wiltshire, UK
Death Date:	4 Dec 1862
Death Place:	Forbes, NSW
Occupation:	Blacksmith in 1851
Medical:	Pneumonia

Notes:
1851 census for Shaftesbury, UK

Arrived NSW on vessel "Ellenborough" in Botany Bay
31 October 1854

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Ellenborough

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Ellenborough was a sailing ship of 926 tons built in 1842, length 154 feet, width 31 feet and depth 22 feet. Based in the Port of London. Lloyds Register 1854.
The shipping records revealed that Ellenborough carried a total of 402 emigrants on this trip comprising 236 males of which sixty were boys under 14. Females totalled 166 of which sixty five were aged less than 14 years.

Most books of the era are fairly consistent in the descriptions of conditions on ships travelling to Australia. Meal rations varied from ship to ship, but comprised meat, bread, flour, suet, plums, rice, peas, coffee, tea, sugar, mustard and vinegar. Biscuits were also provided, but were often a source of complaint as they were frequently baked so hard they were impossible to eat. Prior to embarkation, emigrants were advised to bring jam and things to mix with the water when it gets stale.

The long journeys were arduous and time hung heavily. When weather allowed, pastimes such as concerts and dances were arranged on deck, though strict supervision of single males and females was always maintained. On Sundays, formal Church of England services were led on the upper deck, either by a clergyman or by the captain. Catholic and other services were held below decks. Many emigrants could not read or write, or both, so teachers were often organised to take classes during the voyage.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Orders on Board Ship

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following "Orders on Board Ship" give an indication of the type of conditions experienced by the emigrants on the long haul out from England
(An extract from an Emigrants' Guide---1848)

With the view of promoting order and health on board passenger ships generally to the colonies, the following order-in-council was put forth and should be borne in mind by all emigrants:

Every passenger to rise at 7 am, unless otherwise permitted by the surgeon.
Breakfast from 8 to 9am, dinner at 1 pm, supper at 6 pm.
Passengers to be in their beds by 10 pm.
Fires to be lighted by by the passengers' cooks at 7 am and kept alight by him till 7 pm, then extinquished, unless otherwise directed by the Master or required for the use of the sick.
The master to determine the order in which the passengers shall be entitled to the use of the fires for cooking. The cook to take care that this order is preserved.
Three safety lamps to lit at dusk, one to be kept burning all night in the main hatchway, two others may be extinquished at 10 pm.
No naked lights to be allowed at any time or on any account.
The passengers, when dressed, to roll up their beds, to sweep the decks (including the space under the bottom of the berth)and to throw the dirt overboard.
Breakfast not to commence until this is done.
The sweepers for the day to be taken in rotation from the males above fourteen, in the proportion for every one hundred passengers.
The duties of the sweepers to be to clean the ladders, hospitals and round-houses, to sweep the decks after every meal and to dry, holeystone and scrape them after breakfast.
But the occupants of each berth to see that his own berth is well brushed out, and single women are to keep their own compartment in ships where a separate compartment is allotted to them.
The beds to be well shaken and aired on deck and the bottom boards, if not fixtures, to be removed and dry scrubbed and taken on deck at least twice a week.
Two days in the week to be to be appointed by the master as washing days, but no clothes to be washed or dried between decks.
The coppers and cooking vessels to be cleaned every day.
The scuttles and stern ports, if any, to be kept open (weather permitting) from 7 am to 10 pm, and hatches at all hours.
Hospitals to be established, with an area with ships carrying one hundred passengers of not less than forty eight superficial feet, with two or four bed berths; and in ships carrying two hundred passengers, of not less than one hundred superficial feet, with six berth beds.
On Sundays the passengers to be mustered at 10 am, when they will be expected to appear in clean and decent apparel. The day to be observed as religiously as possible
No spirits or gunpowder to be taken on board by any passenger. Any that may be discovered to be taken into custody of the master until the expiration of the voyage.
No loose straw or hay to be allowed below.
No smoking to be allowed between decks.
All gambling, fighting, riotous or quarrelsome behaviour, swearing and violent language, to be at once put a stop to. Swords and other offensive weapons, as soon as the passengers embark, to be placed in the custody of tha master
No sailors to remain on the passenger deck among the passengers except on duty.
No passenger to go to the ship's cook-house without special permission from the master, or to remain in the forecastle among the sailors.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OUTFIT FOR A MARRIED COUPLE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(An extract from an Emigrants' Guide---1848)
The following list of articles for a married couple contain as few things as they could well go with; of course, the more they can add the better, as it is not possible to wash on the voyage, unless it be a few small things, the supply of water being limited to three quarts a day.

For the wife: Three cotton dresses, one pair of stays, four petticoats, sixteen chemises, two flannel petticoats, twelve pairs cotton stockings, four pars of worsted ditto, six night dresses and caps, six pocket handkerchiefs, four handkerchiefs for the neck, six caps, two bonnets, cloak and shawl, one pair oof boots, two pair of shoes and eight towels.

For the husband: Two fustian jackets, waistcoats and trousers, three pairs of canvas trousers, one overcoat, two felt hats, one Scotch cap, sixteen striped shirts, two guernsey shirts, twelve pairs of cotton half hose, four pairs of worsted hose, six handkerchiefs, eight towels, two pairs boots and one pair shoes, strong but not heavy.

Children in like proportion.
Margaret Davidge was born at sea(?) in 1802. She said she was Irish and was from Sydney NSW Australia. Her story was that she eloped with her gardener, Andrew Elliott, and moved to Mississippi USA where they were married in 1846 in New Orleans. At that time, they were both in their forties, so we suspect that one or both of them were already married and ran off together. They were secretive about their past. Their son, Edwin Davidge Elliott was my great grandfather. Family names are Edwin, William, Margaret, Andrew. Thanks for information. maura@everestkc.net

Hi David,

I am wondering if there is a connection with the Charles Davidge 1840 that you have listed.
Researching the Roberts family tree shows that a Charles Davidge married Mary Ann Carroll in Sydney NSW Australia in 1860. Their daughter Laura Davidge married my great grandfather Evan Roberts in 1889 in Moruya NSW Australia.
Hoping that you may be able to verify we have the same Charles in our trees.

Regards
Sandra Forrest
Hi Theresa,

Further to Sharon's posting, you haven't responded to my last posting, and I am wondering if you have any idea where in the UK your DAVIDGE family came from.

My DAVIDGEs came to Canada from Bristol. However, before that they were in Bath, Langport, Ansford & North Cadbury in Somerset. I believe they were originally from Dorset, but the relevant Dorset records no longer exist, so I may never be able to follow my ancestors back any further than 1685.

You can either respond at Ancestry, or eMail me directly at nfrey@auracom.com. I certainly like to compare notes with you.

Nancy Frey (nee Davidge)
Newcastle, Ontario, CANADA

Hi Bettye,

There are a lot of George DAVIDGEs in my lineage and HARE connections in the Canadian Maritimes. The name that has piqued my interest is Martha. My grandmother's name was Martha Davidge.

Are you related to a Lloyd Hare (living)?

First names of Martha are very common in my lineage as well as a number of linked Davidge lines in the UK, furnished by UK researchers in our 'sharing' group.

We have accumulated a number of genealogies and linked a number of lines. In several of these, Frederick and George, as well as Martha and Hannah are shown. Even though these are common names of those times, when I see "similar given name sets" forming patterns through the generations, they often provide clues and help link other lines, making sibling lists more important.

If you have photos from the early generations, patterns of facial characteristics passing from one generation to the next, we have seen more than one instance of strong resemblances repeating themselves through many generations.

Do you know the names of the siblings of the people you have shown in your post and/or any of their spouses?

George DAVIDGE b. 1791 is within the age range to have been a sibling or cousin to my great-grandfather, John DAVIDGE, who emigrated from England to Burgeo, Newfoundland, Canada as as servant to John MATTHEWS, but could have been anywhere from a young child to an adult.

A DAVIDGE/MATTHEWS connection in the UK could lead to filling some critical holes and give you a wealth of information to fill holes in your own puzzle.

I do not have much information yet about how the eastern seaboard connect to those in the south and west yet, except for our own line from John DAVIDGE m. Sarah Jane GUY. During the Great Depression, several DAVIDGE brothers travelled west, seeking work (all carpenters). The descendants were finally found.

Are there any GUY, ANDERSON, BAGG, MATTHEWS, VACHER/VATCHER connections that you have found to date?

I would welcome direct contact: sharon1333@sympatico.ca.

Sharon
Looking for birth location, birthdate, siblings and parents of the John DAVIDGE who emigrated to Newfoundland, Canada and ended up in Burgeo, Newfoundland. He was a fisherman who drowned, along with his eldest son (George, 18/yo) in Apr 1867.

Joseph Small's writings show that John Davidge came to John Matthews as a 'servant', (but not the year or age)and described him as a "jerseyman". This connection holds a high probability of the DAVIDGE and MATTHEWS families had close connections in England. The fact that J. Small described him as a man, not a child, leads me to think he was of working age and old enough to be called a man.

Sarah Jane GUY was 18 years old when she married John DAVIDGE. John DAVIDGE would have worked for Sarah's grandfather, known as "Uncle John" MATTHEWS (to distinguish him from his father, known as "Old Man" MATTHEWS).

It is also very likely that John DAVIDGE travelled from England to NL on a seasonal fishing vessel and that he came from a family who were carpenters and/or fishermen and had building skills.

An Elizabeth DAVIDGE is shown as having been married in Burgeo, NL, but not whether she was related or whether Davidge was maiden name or married name. Can't track her through census records without knowing spouse or siblings. Early NL census records do not list all outports/occupants.

A Thomas DAVIDGE left England at 15 y/o (location unknown), settling first in Mose Ambrose, later Bay du Nord. Descendants in English Bay, Carbonnear and St Johns, NL. Family lore records several visits by the original Thomas' son or grandson to the DAVIDGES in Burgeo, NL.

Above Elizabeth, Thomas may be close relatives of the first John DAVIDGE, but proof is needed.

There are several John DAVIDGE names in England, but we do not know his age at death or birth location. Birth range is 1810 - 1826, most likely 1819 - 1823.

Have complete descendancy records of all descendants of John DAVIDGE m. Sarah Jane GUY, 15 Sept 1848. Also pedigree of Sarah Jane GUY back to her great-grandparents Hugh BAGG m. Jane ?.

Surnames BAGG, GUY, VACHER (later VATCHER), ANDERSON, STICKLAND (later STRICKLAND) have been found in town/village of Bere Regis, England at same time period. (www.curiousfox.com is source given by living descendant of Hugh BAGG). All above names turn up in Burgeo and other outports on south shore of Newfoundland.

Believe that MATTHEWS, DAVIDGE surnames are likely to turn up in close proximity.

These surnames are known to be the eariest settlers of Burgeo, NL, with MATTHEWS and ANDERSON commonly known as the first two.

All surnames above are believed (by author) to have had close ties in England before emigration.

Does anyone know of a John DAVIDGE who emigrated from England before 1840? Illiteracy and lack of records in early Newfoundland settlement are a problem.

It is possible/likely that UK census records that show DAVIDGE surname living in close physical proximity to several of the surnames mentioned.

We are blocked at John DAVIDGE, but hoping that location of siblings or a family where even family lore of a Davidge son, called John, speaks of his leaving to work for a John MATTHEWS in Newfoundland.

MATTHEWS, BAGG, ANDERSON, GUY are known to have been in the Newfoundland area in the last half of the 1700s.

Direct contact: sharon1333@sympatico.ca

Thanks in advance for any help.

Sharon

Hi Bettye,

Since posting yesterday, I have gone through more of my DAVIDGE research papers, and have a strong feeling that your DAVIDGE family comes from the same root as mine.

If you will take a good look at that 1841 Census Record (I actually had a copy on file) it says that only Frederick was born 'in county' meaning Gloucester.

On checking the IGI I find that George & Hannah had two other children. The eldest was Hannah, baptised 29 Apr 1832 in Sion Chapel, Tuam St., Bridgwater, Somerset. So, if you want to go back a few generations, you are going to be looking for the baptism of Frederick's parents in Somerset.

The other child was Martha, baptised 3 Oct 1841, St. Philip & Jacob, Bristol.

None of these people appear in the 1851 Census, so I would think that they emigrated to the U.S. between 1841 and 1851.

I have several lines of DAVIDGE which all originate in Somerset, and have not followed through on all branches yet.

Another researcher has sent me a printout of his DAVIDGE line which appears to join mine in the early 1700s and I'll bet yours does as well. The name Bettye has been used by the DAVIDGEs before and I believe it is an old family name.

Where are you located, and are you a DAVIDGE by birth?

Nancy Frey (nee DAVIDGE)
Newcastle, Ontario, CANADA
nfrey@auracom.com

This is a message I sent yesterday. I have gone back one more generation to George and Hannah. They are in the 1841 census with Fredrick George being 2 years old.
Bettye

Hi Bettye,

I have a slew of DAVIDGE people in Bristol, but not your Frederick George. My DAVIDGE people originated in south Somerset, migrated through Bath, Somerset, then settled in Bristol.

If you can get further back from your Frederick George, please let me know. We may have a connection somewhere, as my DAVIDGE family goes back to 1685.

Nancy Frey (nee DAVIDGE)
Newcastle, Ontario, CANADA
OPC for Ansford, Somerset

Thank you so much for posting the link to Rebecca Troup DAVIDGE's obit. It contains information on this family that I did not have.

Do you have your DAVIDGE family history in a program that will create a GEDCOM? If so, I would love to exchange information with you to see where we agree/differ.

Please contact me at nfrey@auracom.com.

Nancy Frey (nee DAVIDGE)
Newcastle, Ontario, CANADA

Of course, it would help if I read the obit. first. All these "Rebecca's" have me confused. This one was JBD's wife (I see).

John Beale Davidge died in 1829. Is it possible that this Rebecca from the obituary is JBD's daughter?

I don't think this is our Rebecca Davidge. I think our Rebecca was maybe the sister of John Beale Davidge. Here is a NY Times obit for Rebecca Troup Polk Davidge from 1872 and she was too young to be our Rebecca:
http://mdhistoryonline.net/mdmedicine/cfm/dsp_detail.cfm?id=...

Lita

Wouldn't a child of Rebecca Troup Polk and John Beale Davidge be recorded in church baptisms? When did John Beale Davidge die? His will would name my Rebecca Davidge or her three daughters. This would confirm her lineage as more than a guess.
Did Rebecca Troup Polk Davidge outlive John Beale Davidge?
Either will would provide us with tangible evidence.
