Hi!

I know that Agnes and her son, George, came to the US on the ship "Hartley", which sailed from Liverpool to New Orleans, arriving on April 28,1849.

Unfortunately, I still don't know what riverboat to St. Louis they were on (do you??), but I also understand that many (including Agnes?) died from cholera when enroute. From what I understand, there were few, if any, records concerning who, where, and when these victims died or were buried. :{

Here's a narrative I found:
In 1849, David D. Bowen recounted that when his British group disembarked from the Hartley and went up the Mississippi, the dreaded disease of cholera struck violently: “For every day there was from three to six buried,... and before we got to St. Louis we had buried about sixty of the passengers.

In this same LDS company was Scotsman, John McLaws, who recalled, “Left Scotland for Salt Lake City in March 1849 in the ship Hartley. In steaming up the Mississippi from New Orleans to St. Louis the cholera broke out. Buried about 50 of the Saints. I was very bad with it, but through the blessing of the Lord, I recovered."

On the crossing on the Hartley, I found (two brothers) John Browning Smith and James Browning Smith onboard with Agnes and George.

Turns out, George Davie returned to Scotland after his initial arrival. He subsequently appears in the 1851 Scotland census (Barony Parish, Glasgow), living with the Smith family - John and James' parents (Adam & Martha Smith) and their sibblings.

George returned to the US with members of this Smith family (that adopted and raised George in Tooele, UT) in 1853, aboard the Falcon steamship, which departed from Liverpool, and arrived in New York via Aspinwall (Panama) on Friday, Jan. 28, 1853.

If you'd like, I'd be happy to send to you photos I have of some of these family members.)

Unfortunately, I've yet to understand why Agnes arrived without her husband, James. I have yet to determine where he was, or if he was still alive at the time she emigrated from Scotland.

I would LOVE to gain any addition info. you might have!

I do have photos of George's family, and interesting information regarding his father's ancestors, which I would be happy to send to you. (Just email me at dhattemer@hotmailcom).

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to establish Agnes' ancestors. (In some cases, her name appears with the last name "Boles". Still haven't figured it out.

Would love to hear from you!! Pls. let me know where YOU fit in to George Davie's family!

Your distant cousin,
Donna Hattemer
