I have started a Davie family group on Yahoo groups. You should be able to access it at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/daviefamilygroup/
I have posted the Gabriel Davie letter there should anyone care to read it. Join the group if you like and post your own family information, stories, and pictures there.

Sara

It is possible that your branch could have come from Montgomery County TN by way of MD, VA, NC. They originated in Wales to the best of my knowledge. Do you have a Gabriel Davy/Davie in your family?

Sara

My information says that Joseph Davie likely lived in Waxhaws settlement of Mecklenburg County, NC prior to marriage. According to Rev. War pension records, he moved from York County, SC to Jones County, GA in 1812. On the 1830 census, he is listed in Muscogee County, GA. He applied for Rev. War pension on November 7, 1832 in Muscogee County, GA. He married (Lucinda?) Jane Smith, sister of my ggg-grandfather. They had several children, but I only have names of two. I do not have his date or place of death.

My line goes back to Patrick Henry Davie, born 1821, married Elizabeth Shields in 1843 in VA. His son William Shields Davie, born 1847(?), married Kate Hall. Family lived in Tipton County, TN. The name "Gill" also shows up in some of the males _ Joseph Gill Davie, Warren Gill Davie. Patrick shows up in Madison County, TN in 1850 Census. Q. M. and Winston J. Davie show up in Shelby County records. Winston's wife and child died and he moved back to Christian Co, KY. Gabriel Davie of Person CO, NC migrated to that KY county. Son Gabriel that married Tabitha moved down to Madison Co, TN.

Frederick remarried 23.02.1923, his address then was 138 Elder Street, Govan, Glasgow. He was 48. He married Mary Isabella Mackintosh (age 35) of 37 Abercorn St, Glasgow. She definitely had a daughter Isa but we havent yet traced whether she was Fredericks or not.
Happy hunting
Carolyn
I don't know anything else about Elizabeth Aitken.

Maybe somewhere along the line they were linked, but we think my Dad's Davie's were from Wales originally.)

I'm interested in Frederick Davie (brother of James Davie). I know there were 9 siblings which I have details of if you would like. Frederick married Mary Isabella Mackintosh (his 2nd marriage) in 1923. Am wondering if you have any details of any children they may have had. Mary Isabella was my Mum's auntie. We also know when she died in 1964 the person who registered her death was Isa Mackintosh (daughter) who either was born out of wedlock or married another Mackintosh to confuse matters. My mum's Granny was Williamina Garnet Mackintosh, Mary Isabellas sister.
I have details of the 2 generations before James Davie the rivetter.

The only way to get Davie DNA information is to test a man
with the Davie surname. Your nephew,Mr. Cox,could be tested
for his Y DNA, but it would reveal his father's father's father etc.
Do you know of another male Davie who might be tested?
The Davie name is quite rare and we might find some interesting connections. No one I have found seems to go back further than the early 18th century in either Britain or Scotland with certainty.

Is your nephew a male Davie? The test is for the male Y chromosome which shows the father's,father's, father's
lineage. Females do not carry the Y and cannot be tested for it. They can be tested for mtDNA i.e.their mother's,mother's mother's line which can also be very interesting.
It would be great to find Davie males out there willing to test. My Davie family male line died out with my brother.

My brother's haplogroup is E1b1b1a1 which is M78+V12+
This is found in only a tiny number of men in England/
Scotland. None so far in Wales.
It MAY have come in via the Roman army (not proven).
I wonder if there is any interest among Davie males to do the
testing. So far my brother and another Davie have tested and
have the same haplogroup, but they are not related in genealogical times(1000 years). His family is from Scotland.
Thanks,Sara, for your reply. E.H.Davie also had the first hardware store in Brainerd, Minnesota.

The reason I asked about DNA is that my brother had his tested before he died. It is a very unusual and rare type.
Do you know where your branch came from originally?

The Davie you found is E.H.Davie b.1827 in Nova Scotia. I believe his was the second building in Minneapolis about 1853/4. Would you be able to send me the reference citation? Edmond Henry Davie was a direct relation of mine.

Has any male Davie from any of the branches had his DNA tested?

Looking for any American descendants of Archibald Frank Davie, born 1894, Crediton, Devon, England.
Son of John Perkins Davie, a shoemaker, and Mary Elizabeth Webber.
Emigrated to USA in the 1920s, almost certainly arriving in New York.
His younger sister was my grandmother.

Some corrections and additions to my first post.

I have since discovered that Archie arrived in the USA via Canada, he sailed from Southampton on the RMS Ausonia on 25th June 1927, arriving in Quebec on 5th July.

The 1930 US Census shows him working as a nurse in the Cattaraugus County Home, Machias, New York State, he entered the US in 1927 and was still listed as an alien 3 years later, he was single aged 35.

After this I have no information at all. I don't think he kept in touch with his family in England, on the ship's passenger list he names a Miss B. Shellard of Bristol as his nearest relative despite having many brothers and sisters and his parents still alive, so maybe he had some sort of falling out with them?

I'm particularly interested to know if he stayed in the Machias area, whether he married and had any children, and if there are any Davie family members alive there today.

Oh well, I know they're very common around there, I've come across dozens of them and it's quite a challenge to sort out which ones are my relatives and which aren't!
Most of them seem to have had huge families though, at least the ones that I'm related to, so it's likely that many of them are cousins etc...
If you find that your line goes back to Christian Co KY or Montgomery TN and one of your grandmothers last name was Goodloe, then you are related to me through my great-grandfather, Gabriel J. Davie. His second wife's last name was Goodloe, first name may have been Dorothy, and they had children. I believe some of those children migrated north, possibly to Illinois. After the Civil War, Gabriel Davie came south to live northeast of Dallas, Texas. You likely would be a suitable donor for the DNA project.

Sara Davie-Holt

Davie built his hardware store in Minneapolis, the state was considered by many to be uninhabitable due to its brutal winters.

Sara
