I can find only one entry in the 1871 census for a Jane Davies born about 1863 in Shrewsbury. She was living in Bolton in Lancashire with her mother Ann, brother Thomas age 5 and sister Anne Mariah age 1. Also living there was Ann Jones,Ann's mother age 61 and born in Whittington, Shropshire. Richard must have been somewhere else that night as he is not mentioned and Ann is not listed as a widow. I think Richard and Jane married in 1863 in Shrewsbury.

I am looking for information on my Great Grandmother, Jane Davies. She was born in Shrewsbury, Shrophsire, England on Aug. 12, 1863 to Richard and Anne (nee Jones) Davies. She had a brother, Thomas. She moved to Canada where she met and married Richard John Williams in Montreal, and later moved to Brooklyn, NY. Her brother Thomas also moved to Canada where I believe he remained. His wife was named Susan. In addition to Williams, there is also a connection with Godfrey.

Re: Elizabeth May Davies - Shrewsbury

The ELIZABETH MAY (sometimes known as May Elizabeth) Davies mentioned was my grandmother. She was born 12 Oct 1901, the daughter of Alice Elizabeth Griffiths (b. Atcham (Shrewsbury) Q4 1879) and the Joseph Edward Davies also already mentioned (b. Halford (Craven Arms) Q3 1877).

Alice was the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Griffiths (both born c.1848) of Little Passage, Shrewsbury.

Joseph (a journeyman butcher) was the son of Edward Davies (b. Stowe, near Knighton, c.1852), an LNWR engine driver, and Jane (née James) originally from Builth (b. Q1 1851).

Alice and Joseph were married at Shrewsbury on 27 Feb 1902. Unfortunately both died young, of tuberculosis: Joseph on 7 Aug 1910 and Alice on 31 Jan 1911, and in the 1911 census ELIZABETH (recorded as May) is shown living with her grandparents Edward and Jane Davies at 2 Scott Street, Shrewsbury. Also at her grandparents' home in 1911 were her aunts Bertha (b. 1884) and Winifred (b.1894) and uncle Matthew (b. 1889).

ELIZABETH married Albert Edward Wilson at Boldmere on 31 Jul 1923 (as already mentioned), and between 1923 and 1929 she had four children: Albert Edward, Rodney, Brenda May (my mother), and Dorothy Winifred. Brenda's father's name, as recorded on her birth certificate, was Henry Edmund Pritchard (possibly b. 31 July 1888 at Little Saughall, Chester).

The last known whereabouts of ELIZABETH that I have are Bishop's Castle on 13 Jun 1930, where she is recorded as having placed her three youngest children into the care of Salop County Council. I, as well as other relatives that I am in contact with, would dearly love to know at least the last resting-place of ELIZABETH, and any help that members of the Davies, Griffiths, Wilson, or Pritchard families -- or indeed anyone else -- may be able to give would be very greatly appreciated.

Yes I agree with you findings and suspicions. ??? I think I may need to purchase some birth records to verify mother Emma's maiden name. I think there were two but don't know. I did find a birth record in Cheshire BMD for a Frederick Thomas in 1848 and that's the name on subsequent census.
until I get those records which isn't very easy here in US and UK registers offices. some are available to purchase online but of course, not the ones I need.
will post my results and be happy to hear from anyone else.
Someone in the Stanier/Stanyer family is also researching this dilemma with no definitive answer as yet.

There is a death in Stone, Staffordshire in 1851 of an Emma Stanyer and in 1854 a John Stanyer may have married an Emma Garrett in Wolstanton, Staffordshire. In the 1861 census a John and Emma Stanyer were living in Wolstanton. They had 3 chidren, Frederick, Emma and John. Frederick was born about 1847 according to the census but I cannot find a birth for him. Young Emma was 4 and John was 2 so it is possible that the first Emma was Fredericks mother I suppose.

I have both of those census's she married james in 1863 at holyhead parish church, there is no trace of her,her husband james or her children in the 1871 census. she should have 4 children in the 1871 census, charles, rowland, louisa, david. her birth wasnt registered as we cant find her in the birth reg and neither can anglesey archives, her father was deff richard a labourer as this is on the marriage certificate, i also cant find her grave which could say daughter of etc, the death cert says she is buried in holyhead parish cemetery of which there is 3 and we searched them all and couldnt find her. we think she may have had a sister called louisa born about 1835 amlwch father richard and he was a miner on the marriage cert she married rowland hughes who is always around on the census's with mary and her children and rowlands father witnessed mary and james wedding, but as with mary we cant find louisa davies either and no birth.hope this is enough info and thanks for replying

Hi there. My gran’s cousin, Jack Holt, who is now almost 100, has always maintained that we are related to Ivor Norvello. Jack was a dance band leader in Pembrokeshire up until about 8 years ago. His brother Norman Holt had one of the biggest dance bands in Wales during the 1940’s and was based in Caerphilly. I know that there are Davies’ in our family history but have no idea if or how they link up. I wonder if you could help.
Many thanks,
Tim
I have two antique photos mounted on card stock (photos are about 4x5 1/2") that I found at an antique sale in Emmett, Idaho. Both are by same photo business -- Dixon, Riley and ... Leonardville.

The first is labeled Mildred Francis Davies, Feb 15, 1887, 2nd daughter of E.J. & Katie M. Davies. At the bottom it says: To the E.P. Evans Family. At the top, it says: To Ralph, Dec 25, 1899.

The second is labeled Doris Davies, 1899, 9 months. There is no other writing on this photo. The handwriting looks to be the same as on the back of the other photo.

Would like to return them to a family member; no charge.
Does anybody have any information or connection with David Ronald DAVIES, born in 1910 in Newport. Monmouthshire.

He was (would have been!) an Uncle of mine. I have found the rest of the family, but he is being 'elusive'.
His parents were Joseph Davies and Alice Davies (nee Trenery).

What was the exact date of his birth?

I believe that he married somebody called 'Em' (full name?, date of marriage?) Maybe 'Em' is short for Emily or Emma, but I have been unable to find anything.

Where did they live?

When did David R Davies die?

Does anybody know, can anybody help?

Many thanks.

Thank you for the information and sorry for taking so long to reply. I have the original marriage certificate for Henry and Mary but couldn't make out the first witness name - thanks for solving that. Charlotte, my grandmother was born on 8th Jan 1898. I've come across your postings on GenForum regarding the Hartlepool Merryweathers and found the reference to the death of William in July 1853 very interesting. Do you know which paper the report appeared in? Also, can you solve the puzzle as to whether Jane Merryweather died after her marriage to George on 30/7/1866 and then George remarried Mary Hauxwell Merryweather? Perhaps the girls were related? Many thanks for any help. Regards Louise PS Are you related to my branch of the Davies family?

Seeking info on John Davies (b. 1839 Pembrokeshire) and Ann Jane Davies (b. 1839 Lancashire)

I am seeking information on the Davies family prior to John Davies death at sea in 1883 and Ann Jane's subsequent immigration to Philadelphia with several of the children.

I haven't been able to find any family history prior to these two.

What I do know is that John Davies and Ann Jane Mahoney married in 1863 in Lancaster and had 8 children. Shortly after John was lost at sea off the Rotterdam coat in 1883, Ann and sons Robert Tosh (b. 1873) and John P (1875) and daughter Annie Jane (b. 1876) immigrated to Philadelphia. Others may have immigrated as well, but I don't have record of any other children immigrating.

I have the Davies family bible that covers John and Ann Jane and their children which has been the only clue I have been able to find regarding the family.

Any information that others might have would be very helpful. Thanks!!

I found the marriage of David Emrys and Annie G Moodie in the December quarter 1927. If you have not done so already, I would suggest that you obtain a copy of the marriage certificate to get David's dad and so make it easier to track him down in 1901 1911
You could e mail them at:- registrars@carmarthenshire.gov.uk
or write to
2 Coleshill Terrace, Llanelli, SA15 3DB.
Tel: 01554 744202. Fax: 01554 749424.
Its worth a try.

John Davies (1786-1857), Bala, Merionethshire, Wales

I would like to find information regarding the descendants of John Davies (1786-1857). He was my great-great-great grandfather. Born in Merionethshire, he was a shoemaker and a leader in the Calvinistic Methodist Chapel (Ty Capel Llwyneinion) on the outskirts of Bala. The family lived for many years across the road from the chapel. His wife's name was Mary (I believe her maiden name was Lloyd, 1790-1877).

Their sons were:

John Davies (Einion Ddu), 1819-1906, was born near Bala, Merionethshire, Wales (perhaps in Llanycil). He was married to Susannah Williams. He was also a shoemaker and for many years was the post master and lived at the Post Office in Tregeiriog. He won some notoriety as a poet, winning some prizes at local eisteddfodau, and he published a book of poems and also wrote a catechism for children. They had (at least) two daughters: Mary (1849- ) and Margaret (1857- ). I believe they also had a grand daughter named Mary Ann (1877- ) and a grandson named D. C. Jones (who donated some of his grandfather's papers to the National Library of Wales in 1967-68). But I am not sure who the parents of the grandchildren are.

David Lloyd Davies (Dewi Glan Peryddon), 1830-1881, was born at Llwyneinion and was also a shoemaker, poet, and singer. He won several prizes at local and other eisteddfodau in Wales, including the national eisteddfod of 1865. About 1870, he emigrated to the U.S. and also won prizes at eisteddfodau in America. I believe he lived in Kansas at one point. He died and is buried near Waterville, Wisconsin. He may have had a wife Ellen and a son John.

John and Mary Davies also had four daughters. Jane (1822-1904) was my great-great-grandmother. In 1846, she married David C. Jones (1818-1893, born near Llanuwchllyn). They emigrated to the United States in 1847, and eventually settled in Wisconsin. I know very little about the other three daughters: Ellen (1825- ), Margaret (1827- ), and Elizabeth (1833- ).

I would appreciate any information or tips that anyone is willing to share. I hope to visit Wales next year.

Susan Lerdal
lerdals@hotmail.com

Minnie Davies and John Bestford

I have Minnie Davies marrying John Bestford in Durham 1921. Minnie was born around 1900 i think, but am not really sure. Any info at all on either John or Minnie would be greatly appreciated. I only know of one child - Doris Bestford, born 1929, who married a George Heron in 1954.

Joseph Edward Davies

I am researching Joseph Edward Davies born 1879 in Bromley Kent. he had a sister born 1877/78 called Alice. His father was George Frederick Davies and his mother was Frances Smith. He married Cicely Sayers at St Olaves in 1907. If you have any information on Joseph I would be grateful if you would get in touch.

John H. Davies, Martha M. Rees, Sarah Jane Davies, Mary Ellen Davies, Ethel Jones Kline, Wales and Luzerne Co. PA

I am a descendant of John H. Davies and Martha M. Rees. I've discovered your postings and hoped you might see this. My grandmother, Ethel (Jones) Kline (of Kingston, Luzerne, PA)was the daughter of Sarah Jane Davies (married to David Lloyd Jones). Sarah Jane Davies was the daughter of John Herbert Davies and Martha M. Rees. Both Sarah Jane Davies and her sister Mary Ellen (Nell) Davies were born in Wales.

My grandmother Ethel (Jones) Kline told me a story about her grandmother (i.e., Martha) returning to Wales to visit family. This seems to match your family story of Martha being in Wales when her husband (i.e., John) died. The story was a little fuzzy, but I seem to recall that a mine explosion was involved - either in Wales, and thus the reason for Martha returning there, or at home, and thus the reason for her husband John's paralysis. Does any of this fit with what you've learned of the family?

I see you have a solid birthdate for Martha. Now that I know that, I hope to find her birth record through the GRO records in the UK. I have a GRO marriage record for a John Davies and Martha Rees but am not sure it is the right couple. The certificate states that the marriage was performed on the 24 of September, 1868 at Calvary Chapel, Treforest, in the District of Pontypridd, County of Glamorgan. John Davies was 22, profession sinker (a mining profession), was residing at Treherbert, Ystradyfodwg, Wales; father's name John Davies, also employed as a sinker. Martha was aged 21, living at Club Row, Treherbert, father's name John Rees, whose occupation was stone cutter. In the US censuses, Martha appears to be 4 or 5 years younger than John, while the Martha on the marriage certificate is just one year younger. I saw on another posting that you discovered that John H. Davies came from Pantyffnon. Anyway, I hope to make contact regarding the Davies - Rees families, as I hope to track them back to Wales if someone hasn't done that already.
William Davies/Ellen Evans (South Africa and Australia)

Hello Davies researchers

I am looking for information about William Davies who was born in the Cape of Good Hope around 1838.

I know that William came to Australia around the mid 1800s, where he married Ellen Evans in Little River (now called Mongarlowe), a gold mining town in New South Wales Australia.

I would be very grateful for any information about him prior to his arrival in Australia, or his later years in Australia. I assume he died in Sydney as two of his daughters married in Sydney.

Thanks

Jo
