Re: Seeking parents of Darius Davis

Hello Mike

FYI -- I found 1900 Census, Posey Twp., Rush Co., IN for Mary Davis. Thus, Mary Davis was identified as Mary (Lantis) Davis. At her age 83, Mary Davis lived with Joseph A. Miller and Mary Elizabeth Davis, along with Joseph's 2 sons: Floyd C. Miller and Bearl J. Miller. Joseph A. Miller and Mary Elizabeth Davis were my direct line.

This census shows that Mary (Lantis) Davis's parents were born in Pennsylvania! What a breakthrough for our brickwall... Hope this message helps you.

~Glenna Garner (gg42@comcast.net)

Grace Bell Forthyse Wells Davis in Ohio 1886 - 1956

I am looking for information on Grace Bell Wells Davis.

Born most likely in Ohio (possibly Peebles, Ohio) - Feb 2, 1886.
Buried in Willow View Cemetery, Northridge, Dayton, Ohio on May 16, 1956

Grace was believed to be born as Yellow Moon Running Horse - full Cherokee Native American. She later was named Grace Bell Forthyse. She married George William Wells (sep 3, 1886 - feb 8, 1936) and had one son, also named George William Wells. Grace had a daughter named Audrey with a different spouse, and could possibly have had additional children. She later remarried under the name of Davis and therefore buried as Wells Davis.

Any information that might be found on Grace Bell Forthyse (1886-1956), George William Wells (1886-1936), or any details affiliated with them would be extremely appreciated.

Help Please with Davis

I am looking for information on a Martha Davis who was married to Sherman William Floyd. They had i know 3 girls Anna Mae, Melissa, Retha. I know Anna was born in Buffalo Arkansas. I think Martha may have died young. Sherman & girls were in Pampa Texas in the early 30s. Anna's death cert names her Mother as Martha Davis. I have worked and worked trying to find info on this family and cant seem to find them in family trees or census. I believe Retha married a Carter & lived in the Texas Panhandle. Melissa married a Melvin Tucker & lived in Eldorado Arkansas. Anna married Orvil Alexander Adams & later Charles Summner. Trying to trace this family's history has been a real challenge. If this rings a bell plz contact me.
Thanks Penny

I am also researching the Clower Davis family of Georgia. I am the granddaughter of Samuel John Davis married to Sally Williams. Sam was the son of Mordecai (sometimes listed as Malachi, at any rate called Mac) who married Sarah Jane Clower of Gwinnet county and lived in Walton County after his marriage to Sarah Jane. I have much information on the Clowers but have great difficulty in finding the Davis line. I was always told that his father was Edmond Davis who married a Higginbotham but I can't find them anywhere. I would love to have any information of Mac's antecedents.

Vivian Moore

I was wondering if anyone has any information on Mary Christian "Molly" Davis or her mother Caroline Davis. Molly Davis was my great-great-grandmother. She married Alonza Foy and they resided in Onslow County, North Carolina.

Caroline Davis was not married to Molly's father, but my grandma has told me that she always heard Molly's father was named Bill Blake ("Willie" Blake). He supposedly had several children with Caroline Davis but they were never married. If anyone knows anything about Molly or Caroline Davis, especially who Caroline's parents were, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

Obituary: James C. (Jack) Davis

James C. (Jack) Davis, 83, died peacefully at home on Saturday, October 24, 2009. Jack was born in San Diego, Calif., on November 22, 1925, and attended elementary and secondary schools there. After high school, he joined the Merchant Marine during WWII. Following the War in 1950, he joined the Veterans College Program at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he received his bachelor of arts degree in the College of Arts and Sciences. He played on the UNR championship football team, coached by Joe Sheeketski, from 1947 to 1949. He also lettered in boxing at UNR. After he graduated from college, he became one of the top athletic officials for high school sports in Northern Nevada.

Jack decided he would make his life's career in education. Because he was in the Army Reserve in 1953, he was called into service for the Korean War and served nine months. His assignment was in Item Company 180th Infantry, Korea. Jack was one of 12 men out of 200 who returned from the battle of Pork Chop Hill. The company commander was killed in the battle and Jack served as the new company commander until his tour of duty was over. His commanding general recommended him for the Silver Star, but it never materialized.

Upon his return to civilian life in Battle Mountain, Nev., he became principal of the elementary school there. During his work at Stanford on his masters and doctorate degrees in education, he credited his true understanding of an educational administrator and teacher to his experience in Battle Mountain. While principal there, he discovered that the entire children's Native American population was being taught in a dilapidated segregated facility. He had the separation terminated and all the children entered into the white school. This was the late 1950s.

Jack became the principal of Fallon High School in 1958 and then became superintendent of the Unified Churchill County School District. He received his masters from Stanford University in 1955 and his doctorate in 1963. He was professor of education at the University of Nevada, Reno and taught in the College of Education for seven years. He was also the founder of the Research and Educational Planning Center.

Jack was offered the job as founding president of the still, unbuilt, Western Nevada Community College in Carson City in 1972. During his presidency, he built extended WNCC rural colleges in Fallon, Gardnerville and Elko. He was Western Nevada Community College president from 1972 to1983, when he retired. After retirement, he became director of the Western Nevada Development District, providing infrastructure for the eastern part of Carson City.
In 1978, he was appointed by the governor to the Nevada Athletic Commission. He was the executive vice president of the World Boxing Council and founded the North American Boxing Federation, where he served as president from 1981 to 1982.

In 2004, Jack was honored by having the observatory on the Western Nevada College campus dedicated in his name; the Jack C. Davis Observatory.

DO NOT REPLY FYI ONLY

I have been unable to locate any records for Lula. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My mother, Ruby, is her daughter. I am doing this research for her.

Jason Getchell Davis (b abt 1845 ME - d aft 1910 MA) and family

Looking for info on my following family: Jason Getchell DAVIS, b abt 1845-8 in Sanford, York Co, ME. He was the son of Samuel DAVIS and Esther Jane GETCHELL. He had seven siblings or half-siblings. Jason married Mary A. UNKNOWN abt 1878, and had 2 sons, my gr-grandfather Arthur Getchell DAVIS (October 08, 1873 Sanford, York Co, ME - May 28, 1903, Watertown, Middlesex Co, MA) and Nelson R. DAVIS (March 29, 1877 Maine - After 1920 MA). In 1870, Jason was living in South Dedham, Norfolk Co, MA and working as a farm laborer. By 1880, he had returned to Sanford, ME was a married farmer and had the 2 sons. By 1900, he and his wife and son Nelson had moved to Bridge St in Watertown, Middlesex Co, MA where he worked in a mill. Son Arthur was married to Eva Jane BERRY and also living in Watertown. In 1910, Jason and Mary were still living on Bridge St. in Watertown. No sign of Jason or Mary after 1910.I assume they died in Watertown and are buried there somewhere.
Samuel DAVIS, Jason's father was born about 1817 in Sanford, York Co, ME and married Esther Jane GETCHELL (dau of Joshua GETCHELL and Mary HUBBARD. I find them in the 1850 Census of Sanford ME together, with son Jason G and daughter Josephine, born Dec 1849. Samuel must have died bet 1849 and 1854 as Esther was remarried abt 1854 to Nahum DAY. They had a dau Abbie DAY born abt 1853 and a son Clinton DAY, born abt 1855. There may possibly have been 4 more DAY children who died very young that never made a census. In 1860, they were still living in Sanford, ME in 1860 but Jason and Josephine's last name were listed as DAY. In 1870, Jason, again a DAVIS, was working in Massachusetts, and Josephine DAVIS, unmarried, was still living with her mother, step father and half brother. By 1880, Jason had his family in Sanford, and Jospehine was married. In 1900, Josephine had been married to Asa H. BLAISDELL for 29 yrs and had no children. Esther was living with them, widowed once again, listed as having had 8 children, only 2 surviving.
According to a few online family trees, Samuel was the son of James DAVIS, born abt 1766 in Sanford, ME and Phebe GETCHELL (dau of Joshua GETCHELL and Phoebe GRAY), b abt 1773 in Maine, who were married on April 1, 1794 and had 4 children - Martha, Sophia, William and Samuel. I have found nothing to verify this connection or anything else about this family.
Does this sound like anyone's family? I'd appreciate any information. Thanks.
Wendy

Proposal for the ancestry of James DAVIS who married Rebecca PICKENS

I have been royally confused about this family for a long time. I'm fairly certainly descended from James's daughter Martha DAVIS who married William [Presley?] CRAIG. I keep hearing that James was the son of a Robert [Watkins?] Davis who was born in 1680 and emigrated from Northern Ireland. I doubt that. James was born somewhere around 1748...seems odd that a 68-year-old man would stillbe having children. Plus, the fact that our Robert DAVIS is so strongly associated with Augusta, Virginia, makes me think he's tied into the other DAVISes there.

I'm proposing that Robert DAVIS was the same Robert DAVIS who was the son of James DAVIS and Elizabeth WARREN. Maybe he married Anne PICKENS; maybe he didn't.

James DAVIS, Robert's son, married Rebecca PICKENS.
