Are we related?

The story goes that we were related to Michael Davitt and Archbishop McHale on my Great Grandfather's side. His name was James Francis Davitt, born in Nottingham, England, 1860. He came to America in 1880 after, supposedly killing an English Landlord, in Ireland. His father John Davitt was born in Ireland (we always thought Mayo). An English census of 1861 has the family in Nottingham but later censuses (sp?) are no help. We assume the family went back to Ireland. Since I don't know where, do you have any suggestions for me in my search? James has a brother John and a sister Julia (all older) born in Nottingham and then a sister Kate born in Ireland around 1846. How would I find information on Kate? Where did most Irish leave Ireland for America in the year 1880? I would appreciate any help. Also are there any Irish web sites for research? The one that you list at your site says it moved. Thanks so much.
