[By the way, beating England was predictably easy for your fellows, but I don't think WE deserved to go down to the All Blacks...]
It will be good to see what Fiona may come up with.
Cheers
Phil

G'day Fiona,
I too would be most interested in info from your Aunt Joan's booklet. I began this thread on Leyshon Hopkin Davy who was my GG Grandfather, about whom I have written a lot and have a photo of. I, like Phil, am most interested in sharing info direct so that attachments are successfully transmitted. My email address, suitably disguised is dwilkins ... followed by @...then ... bigpond... then .net.au. I hope to hear from you and Phil.
Regards
Dave in Sydney, Australia

Re: Davys family of Sligo

Robert (and Harry),

I have researched the ancestry of a cousin of mine in Scotland, and found that his mother was descended from John Winterscale, who died in 1858 in Edinburgh, aged 68. He had been a surgeon with the Highland Light Infantry (and present at Waterloo) and later with the Royal Scots Greys. His death certificate gives his father as James Winterscale, London proprietor, and his mother as Elizabeth Winterscale (maiden name Davis). His will, originally dated 1850, provides for legacies to his mother Mrs Elizabeth Winterscale "of Sligo" and to his sisters Miss Eliza Winterscale and Mrs Mary Davis, "both of Sligo".

I could not help note the mention of Sligo somewhere in this thread about John Winterscale Davys. This suggests strongly that the Winterscale family - a very unusual surname it would seem - came from Sligo. I wonder also if your Davys is a variant of the name Davis appearing in the death certificate/will of my John Winterscale?

Best regards,

David Robertson,
Lincolnshire, England.

Davey - Ontario

I am the son of Thomas Colin Davey (deceased) my grandfather was Benjamin Davey (deceased) from Cornwall, England. Benjamin went from England to Michigan, USA then moved to Creighton, Ontario just prior to my fathers birth. I was told by my father that Davey could have been spelled differently then we spell it now. My father never told us much about his family. I know that my grandfather Benjamin had a very big family and only a few of the siblings married and had children. If anyone knows any information I would be interesting in finding out more about my family. I know that Benjamin and his brothers donated stain glass windows in a church in Cornwall. I know that he came across to USA with a sister. One of his brothers took off to Africa. Other than that that is about the only information that I have on my grandfathers family.

Joseph Davie married the sister of my ggg-grandfather. I have seen her listed as Jane and Lucinda, so I have tentatively listed her as Lucinda Jane Smith. According to old church records, she was the oldest child of James Smith and Lillis Patton of York District, South Carolina. I only have names of two of their children. Joseph Davie apparently died in Georgia after 1832. Would like to exchange information on this family.

Contact my cousin Robert Grant Davy of Hamilton at e-dress rober637@sympatico.ca. He's working on the family tree.
Mine is denysedavis@hotmail.com (I'm Shane)

Our Grandfather was Frank Davy (married Janet Strathern Smith) and he always stated that Humphry was our gt, gt, Uncle. Frank's Dad taught at Leeds as well and that falls in line with Dr. John's background.

Had people tell me I look like Humphry in one of his portraits, but...

Anyone colour-deficient in your line; myself and Grandpa Frank both were.

Have other details.

Thank you Malcolm,
That is another possibility I can consider. In your Davy records would you have any mention of 2 of Elizabeth (Houchin)and William Davy's children: Jeasy and Mary Davy both baptised 8 Jun 1782 Wickham Skeith? I have had marriages of Mary and Jeasy checked: 1800-1812 Mendlesham, Cotton, Finningham, Gislingham, Thwaite, Thorham Magna, Stoke Ash without success. Volume 10 Suffolk marriage index of 1813-37 covers Hartismere deanery, which includes Wickham Skeith area: no entries for Jeasy. These two have remained a mystery!
Best Wishes,
Lyn

Hi,
Sorry for the belated reply - have been on holidays. Yes,
when I first started family history I was told the name was Welsh and like you, have no evidence to support this! Though my dad and his family were staunch Methodists and also good singers...so I thought that may be where this particular family story came from. It is interesting that you are from another branch and have heard something similar.
Are you descended from Isaac and Mary's daughter Winifred?
My mother's family has a connection with the Parish name - around the Dungog, Paterson, Stroud area of NSW. Any relatives in that area?
Best Wishes,
Lyn

I am in contect with a descendent of his who lives in New Zealand. My email is hbell11804@yahoo.com.
Lyn , I don't have any record of a marriage for Jeasy Davy(My records give bapt of Teasy ) . Mary Davy marriages 1787 @ Ashbocking , 1794 @ Charsfield , 1797 @ St James Bury S E , 1806 @ Bures St Mary , 1810 @ Barnham , 1811 @ St Marys Bury S E and 1813 @ Bardwell may all be discounted at present .1807 @ Stonham Aspal to William Slade and 1807 @ Stradbroke to John Girling are possible but I believe the most likely is 11th Jan 1809 at Old Newton to John Harvey is the most likely of those in my records .
Malcolm

I have records of many Davy / Davey names in Suffolk , but very few Williams that would fit your search. As Elizabeth Houchen was baptised at Wickham Skeith 3rd January 1740 , it would be logical for William to have been of a like age . He of Cotton 29/8/1744 seems the best match at present. William of Combs 2/11/1735 is another possibility although Combs is that much further from Wickham Skeith .

Malcolm

Hi Lyn, I have not got further back than William and Elizabeth either. I am also descended from Thomas Davy and Maria Mean through their son Isaac, your John's older brother. I was wondering if there is any family tradition in your family that the Davy's were from Wales? Obviously the record doesn't support this, unless several generations before being in Suffolk they were in Wales.

Hi, I have been on holidays too! Yes, I am Winifred's granddaughter. She died in the 1960s when I was a child (although I remember her.) Isaac was a fervent non-conformist Christian - Baptist, I think. My father grew up on Isaacs small farm - as Winifred was their only daughter, her husband Ernest Parish built a house next to Isaac and Mary's house and farmed the land. When Isaac died they moved away, with Mary and their children. My father remembered that Isaac used to preach to the family on Sundays. As he was a Baptist he believed in adult baptism but didn't have many takers: his son in law and his grandchildren declining the offer. I think Dad referred to him as a lay preacher so it is possible that he also preached to a congregation at times. Older generations on Ernest's side were also very religious but they were Primitive Methodists.

Winifred was dark haired and dark eyed I think this came from Isaacs side as her mother Mary was fair, blonde and blue eyed.

I don't think we are related to Parish's in Dungog, Paterson and Stroud unless they moved there from the Macleay River area around Kempsey.

John stayed in England (Fressingfield). His birth date is 4 Jan 1810. He died 24 Feb 1889. He married twice. Mary Knights in about 1832 (she died 1860), and Mary Goddard on 17 July 1861. He had 10 children! by Mary Knights. Their names are Anne,Esther Maria, Mary, Emma, Robert, John, Elizabeth,William, Henry and Alfred. Mary Goddard had a son named Henry who was known as Harry. From the census returns it would appear he adopted the name Meen. Esther Maria went to London and married James Lemon and had 4 children. Anne, Robert and William also went to London where they lived and died. William, my great grandfather, died 19 March 1901. With the exception of Elizabeth and Rachel all Maria and John's siblings married and had children.
I worked on the Meen's with a cousin who was the absolute authority on them. Sadly he died and all the records are with the Genealogical Society in London. He was planning on doing a one-name study.
It is great to make contact with another cousin.
best wishes
Ann
Additional to my previous post - I found an article in the New Zealand Paper "The Star" for 25 June 1904 in the "Missing Friends" column, where "his cousin" is asking for information on John Winterscale Davys of Sligo county Ireland who was last heard from in 1860. This provides a pretty firm connection back to the Sligo County Davys and possibly Vernon Davys?

Robert

My father Robert James Davy was born in 1920 in Australia.

Daniel Cooper Davy's mother was Sarah Davy in Norfolk. I have come upon some photos and wondered if the relative would be interested in a scan of the one I have, or of the address of the antique store I purchased it at. They did have more photos of both Robert and Elizabeth.

I am not connected with the antique store, nor am I seeking money. These look to be late 19th century - early 20th century photos. If you believe you are related to these people, please let me know.

Sir Humphry Davy did not have an uncle called Robert. That was his own father's name and I doubt that he (Sir H.D.'s father) would have had a brother with the same name.

Does anybody know if Sir H.D. had children? I've drawn a blank so far.
