my family live in Carlisle, cumbria decendants of robert george dawes, b 1875(also my fathers name) who came from cockermouth where we know they worked in the flax mill known as 'the goat'(from gote/gate as in sluice gate)a watermill has been in the area since roman times, we know that many of the men in the family were engineers...firstly ship building and the watermills..later steam engines for the railways and the mines(coal, graphite, copper)and have been carters ...they would have lived and worked in cockermouth, maryport and whitehaven as these are all small coastal towns...and in those days you lived where there was work. it's not a large family so we are sure to be related. if i can be of any help...let me know.

Hi, just wondering if you got any further with this query about Josiah Dawes from Kent. I agree with comments below - first wife and mother of children was Elizabeth, second wife Mary. Josiah was born about 1796 but can't find any record. I found a marriage for Josiah Wise Dawes and Elizabeth Turmenger in 1824. I also found a christening for Elizabeth Turmenger in 1815 but she would only be about 9, unless born sometime before that. Name Turmenger seems very unusual, can't find much on that at all.

Hello Pat. Not sure if I shared this info with you or not, so I thought I would post here. According to the 1900 census Fannie was born in 1881 in New York. Father unknown, mother born in New York. She was adopted by the Slones prior to 1900. I do not find that the Slones had any children of their own. Fannie and Seymour were married about 1903. Robert was born in 1904. Josephine was born in 1907. According to the 1910 census Fannie was committed to the Utica State Hospital for the Mentally Insane, under the name of Fannie Greene, married. The 1920 census lists a Belle Greene at the Newark State School, single. This school was for the mentally handicapped, I am assuming the intent was to "teach". But the 1930 census lists Fannie Greene back at the Utica State Hospital, divorced. Since Seymour married Dorcas Irene Dow Stewart around 1923 in Michigan it is safe to assume that he divorced Fannie around 1920. Did your mother ever indicate that she visited her mother? Any pictures in your archives that include Fannie? As I find more info I will post for you. You may want to communicate via my email - wafekete@sbcglobal.net. My cell phone is 1-248-882-2743. Also, would you like info on the Greene side of the family? We have info on them going back to the 1700's in England. The oldest member is Thomas De Greene. He rode with William the Conqueror. Very interesting. And since Seymour's oldest brother (my great-grandfather) had 7 children, you have a bunch of cousins. In fact the youngest of the 7 is still living, Donald Greene, age 91 in LA, California. He would be your mother's first cousin. Elizabeth

Hi Jane,
Would this have been 1951? If so, you are right, but I don't remember you, I remember a boy, possibly your brother, who was 5 or 6 yrs older than me. It was at a farm; we brought the cows in to the barn and took the milk to the dairy, and that is about all I remember. I hope this is the right time and place for that visit you remember. Uncle Bob Slone and Grandpa Greene were father and son; the family resemblance was striking. My wife and I with our young 9-month son, went to visit them in Syracuse in 1967. Uncle Bob and Grandpa Greene came to Michigan and we took them to Marine City to see Mark's father for Thanksgiving in 1965. I think Grandpa Greene said he was staying with someone named Greene in Detroit, but I don't know who that Greene was, but I think it was a nephew.

Mark

Hi Mark,
Yes that is probably about the right time. The farm you remember was the Brandis farm. Bill Brandis the father was my Mom's cousin. His mother was Alice Greene Brandis, my Grandpa's sister. The boy you probably remember was the adopted son of Liz & Bill Brandis. We lived just a few houses down from them. I can remember going there for dinner with lots of people being there. My Mom seemed to be in seventh heaven!

Hi! It is nice to actually find someone on my Mom's side of the family. I am the youngest of Josephine's daughters. I have been unable to find any information on Fannie Belle. I wrote to the hospital in Utica, NY trying to find some info but never heard from them. I have one sister left in NY state but she is 75 now so I really don't want to send her on a wild goose chase! I do know that Mom said her birth mother was adopted by the Sloans, the same people adopted Uncle Bob. He was pretty much there to take care of them etc. They wanted nothing to do with my Mom as she was just born. Grandpa Greene's parents raised her. I was told that Fannie Belle was in Marcy State for years after giving birth to my Mom. Mom was sixteen when Grandma & Grandpa Greene were married.

Hello. So excited to "meet" you. I believe it was my mother and Grandparents that came to visit you in New York. At any rate, it is still a great pleasure to speak with you. Since my last post I have found that the information given to me by my Grandmother before she passed was incorrect. I was always under the impression that your Great-Grandmother, Fannie Bell Slone Greene, died with Josephine was a toddler. Also, that Josephine was an only child. Imagine my surprise to find that Josephine had an older brother, Robert, and Fannie was alive as of the 1920 census. My Grandmother's "baby" brother, Donald, is still alive, age 19, living in LA, California. I have sent a message to his daughter, Jill, to see if he remembers when Uncle Seymour lived with them in Detroit. Also to see if he remembers his second wife, Irene Stewart. I found that Fannie was adopted by the Slones. Do you have any information on this? So happy to have met you and your family. xoxo HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!!

Hello Pat. Sorry this has taken so long to respond. I got distracted. I remember my grandmother, Ruth Greene Stecker, speaking so highly of your grandmother. In the 80's I took Grandma to Long Island so she could attend the wedding of her nephew, the son of Donald Seymour Greene, thus another cousin to you. On the way back to Michigan we stopped by Josephine's place and our grandmothers were able to spend the day together. Your grandfather lived with my great-grandfather while he was in Detroit. Grandma always spoke so highly of him. But I do not find any record that Irene lived with him. The census records indicate he was married, so I should go back and look again to see if Irene is listed under the Dow or Stewart name. I am in contact with one of Irene's grandsons, I will keep you informed as to what he says. You indicated that your Grandfather divorced Fannie. Can you tell me which state this was in, New York or Illinois? Also, do you know what Fannie's maiden name was? We have it as Sloan (Slone), but this would not make sense since she had a son, Robert Sloan who was older than your Grandmother. According to the genealogy records that were kept by my great grandfather, Robert Greene, Josephine was the only child of Seymour. He no other children with Fannie, and no children with Irene. Any info you can share is greatly appreciated, and we will share anything from this end to help plug the holes. Thanks again.
Elizabeth Fekete

Hello Mark. I am so happy to hear from you. My sister and I have been trying to research Uncle Seymour (Martin Seymour Greene) and his wives, but have not been able to break through the walls very successfully. This is what we know. Uncle Semour married Fannie Sloan (Slone?). They had a daughter Josephine. I understand Fannie had a son, Robert, but Uncle Seymour is not his birth father. So Uncle Seymour must have been Fannie's second husband, not her first as we previously thought. In fact, this is the first I have heard that Josephine was NOT an only child as previously thought. We also know that Irene was Uncle Seymour's second wife, but have not been able to locate any information on her whatsoever. We found her name listed on a genealogy sheet kept by my great-grandfather, and Uncle Seymour's eldest brother, Robert Durward Greene. So anything you can share will be greatly, and I mean greatly, appreciated. Also, if there is anything that you would like from our end we are more than happy to share. My email address is wafekete@sbcglobal.net. Thanks much.
Elizabeth Fekete

My great grandfather Henry Dawes was the brother of Robert Ernest. There were about 12 siblings, Henry being the third born and Robert Ernest the nineth. Their parents were William born abt 1857 in Whitehaven, Cumberland and Mary Jane Sewell born abt 1878 also in Whitehaven. The start of the family tree is with another William Dawes who died before 1841. He was married to Isabella Rawes born abt 1776 Ambleside.
There was quite a few Dawes family living around the Glenridding area but I haven't researched this as yet.

Good morning
Thanks for your reply. My great great grandfather William Dawes is buried in Brucetown, VA, in Frederick County. My grandfather tried in the 1950s to learn more. He did find the date of birth (November 1, 1790)on the tombstone and obtained an unpreserved record of his death which established his birthplace as Frederick County, Va. I assume the Virginia Department of Vital Records would still have that record.
A letter he received speaks to family oral history that William Dawes was a newspaper publisher I have found online that a William Dawes owned and published the Washington Mirror in the 1830s, but no proof it is our William Dawes.
My grandfather put a great deal of effort into attempting to establish a link to William Dawes, who rode with Paul Revere to warn of the British activity. He was not succesful and it is clear there is not a direct line to that William Dawes. We might be his distant cousins, but I cannot verify that.
My e-mail contact information is polbsmo@aol.com. I have extensive information about the line from William down to the present and am happy to share. I would welcome your information. With a birthdate of 1765 it is possible Abraham could be the father of my William.

Robert Dawes Hagedorn
Blue Springs, MO

Has anyone confirmed for you that Abraham Dawes b. 1765 Maryland, d 1828 Fauquier county, Va and Mary C - no info were the parents of Isaac, William (my conntection), Abraham, Elizabeth, Harriet, Sarah, and Benjamin. Richard Dawes has documentation of this family to Adrain Dawes 1650 of Newthorpe, Nottinghamshire, England.
